Love these Astra's. I'd love a 1.9 SRi Estate for work but the company I work for are stingy with the car allowance so I'm stuck with the i30 they gave me!

yes, didnt realise this until a friend told me, its a good engine, only thing I am told to watch out for is cambelt and water pump failures, but thats all been done so should be good for another 50-60,000 miles now

then 1.9 CDTI 150 bhp one, really good on fuel if you ask me, average is 48mpg on the motorway (when I was running very early for a meeting once I cruised down the motorwya and egged it on for 59mpg! (but went down again when I got bored) and around town it usually hangs around 45mpg

Yup, same engine. Also the same as the 1900 JTD Fiat/Alfa engine too.

Yours the 150bhp tune along with 6speed box?

Gearboxes aint weak as such, just get notchy with high miles. How much did you pay for a new box?

EGR/DMF/DPF are the main issues in terms of niggles

yes, 150bhp 6 speed. forgot to add, apparently the gearbox in these are not as big/strong as they should be for the engine but thats just one person who told me that. The issue I had was the clutch release bearing had dropped and broke the clutch, oddly thought it would still drive.
Couldnt really prevent that from happening but while it was in the garage I asked them to take it for a drive to check a "whining noise" almost sounded electric and they came back saying (I cant remember the name of the part sorry but the bearings around it at the back of the gearbpox were very warn and to be honest sounded shagged.

I knew the chap at the garage so he said he would drop it out and have a look as he was replacing the clutch anyway and seems the bearings had broken up and got into the gearbox oil, not a great thing apparently.

I bought a new box from Vauxhall for £1600 and then fitting was £200 as a favour from my friend + the clutch kit as well at £80. Was offered a recon but decided against that and opted for a new one, cost more but got the warrenty for 3 years etc

also, had the flywheel replaced as there was play in this and considering the box was already out i thought I may as well get it all done. after paying for it I did have some regret of getting it all done because it cost a bomb but its all done now and under warrenty smile

£1600 for a NEW box aint out the way. My saabs only got 77k on, but weighs a hell of a lot more.

When the time comes, I'll deal with it. They're not renowned for being the strongest of boxes, but used in vivaros and all sorts IIRC.

My plan is to do the same as you, keep the car until 200k. As nothing else for 6k provides 50mpg, leather all round, twin ac, etc etc.

I wish the new Hondas had the same clutch. The DMF clutch on my (current model) Civic has needed replacing twice in 35,000 miles.

Not bad, most of these will have had 3 gearboxes, a few flywheels/inlet manifolds/egr valves/clutches by now

who'd actually change the EGR valve?

£100+ to change, or £25 to clean and alter so it won't happen again

That is good going for that enginethumbup they normally suffer from noisy dual mass flywheels well before that sort of mileage

is it a do it yourself job or can anyone attempt this, I have read about needing it to be cleaned now and then and I also know where it is in the engine bay, however, what I do not have is any mechanical ability about me, is this an easy job to do and how many bits do I have to remove before needed it to be done?

another thing, if an EGR valve is going slightly faulty, (if that is the correct word) are there symtoms for this, lack of power etc

Trying to establish if it needs doing?

I seriously considered the saab, I actually went to see one but I didnt get a good impression from it, not the car in general, just this particular example i went to see, had some slight niggles with it, was enough though to convince me to save my money and keep this one, like you say same engine etc and all I would be doing is paying money for a different car with the same performance.

bit of an old mans car I know but serioulsy looking at the Volvo S40 D5 next, my old man has the new C60 and I love it, I have borrowed a couple of Volvo's from work before and they seem to handle really well and the D5 is fast but economical enough to be sensible.

also, read somewhere that the Volvo S40 and V50 are in one of the lowest insurance brackets you can get, apparently insurance companies love them (perhaps becasue they are affiliated with the olrder generation, however, I love there new ones.
