Old school Polo
Discussion
Chum, so many people have tried to talk me into modifying it. I reckon I could turn it into an Evo eater for less than a grand but I'd rather try and get it as close to standard as possible. There are so many modified cars out there these days but it's so hard to find an original classic.
Believe it or not, I was offered a grand for it the other day. I asked the guy what he wanted to do wit it. He said he was gonna rat it out, sand all the paint off, fit coilovers and a set of wide rims. I told him to get out of my yard lol. It's so hard to get an original car these days and I want to keep it that way.

That doesn't surprise me one bit My wife had one of them when she was at uni, on NI plates too (GBZ 1901 I think) and it was indestructible, It had the front bumper torn off in a reverse parking incident (reattached with self tapping screws) and once mysteriously ate all its coolant on a dual carridgeway but soldiered on. Bought for £325 and sold a year later for £400 and was still going strong 2 years later as someone local's dog wagon. Ours had the 4+E gearbox and was white, I'd actually quite like another one, but only with a bigger engine, I do prefer the estate to the coupe though personally.

How?
I work in a scrapyard. Can get full Mk3 Golf GTi running gear for £100, that leaves me £900 to spend money modding it. Doesn't take a lot of money to build a fast car if you can do the labour yourself. Have a look on youtube for the Mk1 Polo with a 1.8T conversion. Running 14 inch front tyres IIRC and 750 BHP, smoked anything that came up against it.Synchromesh said:

How?my parents had a 1983 "Y" verions brought new. A Polo C, Formule E. The mechanical fuel pump kept going wrong, and the interior got so hot during the 80s summers (remember them??) that the plastic expanded and "bubbled" along the door pulls.
they eventually p/ex it a few years ago for a Ford Ka, with just 40k miles on it. A great little car, with many happy memories. Yours looks very nice.

Judging by other VAG stuff I assume it involves bodging in a 1.8T and winding to boost up - fit it yourself and you can have the whole lot, including some budget eBay coilovers and some bigger brakes fitted for under £1k. It would probably be horrid to drive though.
Still not likely to compete with an Evo in a straight line, let alone in a corner though.@OP, nice car - my cousin went through a VW phase, and had a coupe and breadvan at the same time. I really liked the coupe, and would consider one myself now if I were looking for a second car.
Wow! Not everyday one of these pops up. Used a 1.3CL of these as my first car, criminal understeer and awful heater but it still felt really solid at whatever age it was. Should definitely feel like that with those miles, what a find. And you can definitely get along way round that speedo with some effort and a descent...
Old skool! Good to see a totally stock one
Missus had a mk2 coupe S, that was a riot to drive, went through various engines, ending with a G40 motor, but I reckon it was in its best form with a GT engine on a xr2 carb! the noise was ace as was the torque delivery
I say keep it standard and clean, lovely to see them stock.
A 1.8t engine is a tall engine and you get height clearance issues with the sump and also driveshaft and wishbone clearances. Last one I knew about ran 17" wheels to have the clearance, handling wasn't great though.
