Car is being moved to a local garage on Friday of this week. I have always hoped to avoid sending it to a garage, but for various reasons I have decided to send it somewhere to get the following items completed

- Brake rebuild all round (New drums, cylinders and shoes)
- Upgrade to anti burst doors
- LED Indicators/tail/brake/side lights. Just can't fae the god awful standard units any longer
- replacement alternator
- MOT
- Possibly fix the spring to stop second gear popping out.
- Fit my funky pool ball gearknobs smile

In the 10 years I've had it we'd had a dog, lost a dog, moved house, had two children and the later obviously takes up a lot of time. Hence the need to take it to a garage.

I've had the Series 10 years and its been at my mums for 4 years and family members were suggesting that it was time to cut my losses and sell it. However, I could now never afford a replacement especially as prices are contently rising s just decided to get the work done and hopefully enjoy it through out 2022. The hope is that it will be on the road by Christmas this year.

This is it. Think there is only one grub screw in place onthe four drums on my Series and I recon it would take me half a day to remove one drum biggrin

At least your 90 had seat belts. I had to build brackets and all sorts to fit proper inertia reels on my Series. When I bought it was just fixed three point belts covered in what felt like 20 years of mud.

Also, I've estimated that it could be a couple of months before I wold have completed some of those jobs and by that point it will be show season again and I could see my self missing another show season.

It's difficult to put into words what it will mean to me to get it on the road and driving again. I'm also expecting to be quite emotional when it comes to me picking it up (If they can actually MOT it!)

So after 4 years in my Mum’s garage, it made the move to the garage to hopefully have the brakes, LED lights and anti burst doors fitted plus what ever else is required for the MOT.

I’m pleased to report that it drove up the ramp of the flat bed under its own power, which I was pretty pleased with. Would have been quite sad if it had needed to be winched up. It’s testament to how robust these old diesels are. It’s been 6 months since it was last started and it just took a couple of cranks to fire into life. Smokey as heck of course.

ALso, I had suspected that the brakes were completely gone, but a good shove of the brakes proved there is something still there, so better than I expected.

Not going to lie, I got a bit emotional leaving it at the garage. Like many Classic Car Owners, I haven’t logged hours on this, but the interior alone is several days of painting, sanding, trimming and sticking. I also discovered that car upholstery was much harder than I thought. Even had my 70 year old mum out helping me apply carpet to the bulkhead. Think she was also sad to see it go in some ways.

Who knows if it will be ready before Christmas. We will have to see. Hoping family will be able to come and collect it with me so someone can take photos. It will almost feel like a new car collection smile

Called in at the garage today to drop off a gear lever gator.

Decided to get the garage to fit my pool ball gear knobs and near lever gator as I didn't fancy trying to remove the old ones.

One mechanic was wiring up the indicators and another was working on the doors when I was there.

Apparently ever single mechanic at the garage had worked on my series and it was becoming the preference compared to trying to fault find issues on the modern stuff which was their day to day work.

New Brakes and lines have been fitted and doors should be done this week and hopefully we will be picking up on Saturday the 18th

Was hoping this was going to be a family affair, but due to family lunches and haircuts, I'll be doing it my own which is quite sad really and not what I wanted.

So after many many years and no less than 9 years after I started this thread, my Series 3 has a valid MOT.

Looking forward to getting it home now to get started on a few of the outstanding items, but most of all, I want to show it some people including my two boys who have never even been driven in it. I have a few close friends who have been sent many messages with pictures of it over the years, so looking forward to that.

Well, yes would be fun, but I couldn't think of anything more terrifying than driving a Series in Snow and Ice biggrin

However, mine now has fresh brake, suspension and steering wasn't too bad, so this is as good as it will get. Might drive round in it for a year and then consider an engine swap, but just want to start using it as it hasn't been used on a regular basis for many many years.

Collected it on Saturday morning. I smiled all the way home as it chugged and bounced along the road.

Pool ball gear knobs were bought as a bit of a novelty and they are actually lovely to use. Decent shape and quite comfortable to hold too.

I'm not sure I can be so positive about the garage. Within three miles someone had kindly told me one of the brake lights isn't working, so who knows if it was even working when it went in for a MOT. My guess is they used the original earth points which are well known to be rubbish. Annoyingly I even installed a new earth point for them 😕. The working LED lights are so much better than the old ones though. I'm almost scared to try the hazards though.

I fitted new top rad hose and bypass hose to cure a visible water leak, but it still has one even though it's apparently fine according to the garage as it's maintaining coolant level and not loosing water (which it clearly is) I asked them to run it for half an hour the day before the check things were ok. They clearly didn't. Bit annoyed about that as its thrown water all over the new paint on the inside of the bonnet.

Notes on the doors said it needed new hinges. I offered them new hinges several times and said I was happy to pay them to fit the new hinges. They point blanc refused to drill the doors for the key barrels because of the paint frown

I always knew the anit burst doors were going to be a challenging as the alignment on my doors isn't good and the note on the invoice states they are warped, so may bite the bullet one day and buy new doors, but short of a rebuilt and properly aligning the bulkhead, I'm, not sure new doors will make any difference. My doors are still square in one profile at least, but the difficultly is the rear tub and the bulkhead. Annoyingly, My doors are re pretty solid.

However they could be bothered to give me a quote for a new clutch and I will admit it's slipping quite badly. However, if they had called me with that quote, I would have probably gone ahead with it and they could have earned them self some more money in the last few days of the year.

Going to call another local garage and get a quote for the clutch as I'm just not that happy with the service from the garage on the work that I asked them to do.

Regardless of the garage, I do now have a 12 month MOT and it's insured and taxed. This just a few snaps as I didn't have much time.

Short term plans are to fit my external sun visor, fit my vinyl door trims, wire up my 12v outlets for the dash and find somewhere to hold a phone. Medium term is to get the bluetooth am wired up to the rear speakers at least.

One indicator really isn't bad. The earth point are so s@&*, I would almost expect the indicators to return when you hit a bump biggrin Never had a wiper fall off, but that is the kind of fault that would make me chuckle

When I bought it 2012, mine had a fresh MOT as well and it had a lot of chassis work done to get it through that MOT. Thankfully I am hoping I won't have to touch the chassis for many years unless I need to go for a removable gearbox cross member to aid easier installation/removal of the box.

Added a bit of luxury today. Made these door trim panels well over a year ago out of 6mm ply and if memory serves I even treated the timber using wood preserve.

Handles are bolted through steel spreader plates. MY eventually fit some net pockets for some more storage

Wish I'd bought the Britpart ones as they are only £50 a set and probably fit better. However I know they won't be made using 6mm ply and Britpart hardboard won't be treated either so mine should last quite well.

Hoping to do the driver's side tomorrow and the trim panel hides the sound deadening too, which always looks like tin foil glued to the door

I believe that this style of door trims were a factory option under the 'delux' trim pack.

I’ve got a set on my SIII and they absolutely keep the mud and filth off the chassis - most bulkhead footwells go because they are blasted by spray and mud from the wheels. They’re a bit fiddly to fit, but well worth it.
Not heard of those before so will have a look. Footwell on passenger side has been patched and driver's side is fairly solid.

However, I expect tye bulkhead will probably need to be replaced at some point ,but I'm hoping that won't be in my lifetime!

That's a lovely picture. Not sure I will ever venture as far as Wales but we will see. Part of me is considering selling my Subaru which will force me to use the Series as and when I need a car, but it's a seat short as I have two kids 😁.

Fitted the driver's side door card last night and tested my 12v panel. Will try and bolt that in today as I'm planning on doing a video on it for Jonny Smiths Late Brake Show YouTube Channel. He's known to not be the biggest LR fan, but I don't know if I don't try. He has a section called Projects Of The People and invites viewers to send in photos of their own projects for inclusion on his videos.

Anyways, driver's door looks much nicer with the panel fitted. Like the passenger side one, I made it over a year ago.

My original plan was to drop the Series off to get the clutch done on Thursday, but the more and more I look round the car, the more missing items I'm seeing, so now considering an alternative garage, but that would mean missing the Bicester Heritage event the following weekend and my mate was coming up specially from Somerset, so not sure what to do.

So its been three moths since the work was completed on the Series and on Friday I collected it from another garage where it had the following items replaced:

Clutch
Clutch Master Cylinder
Handbrake re-build
Transfer box outer seal (This is what caused the hand brake to be useless as the drum was full of oil. Quite a common issue.
Radiator
Theromostat
Waterpump
Adjustment of all four drums

It was a hefty bill, but this should at least give me some reliability in terms of it over heating.

The engine still needs some work though as the power really drops off if on an incline if the revs aren't maxed out. Possibly the timing needs adjusting. Who knows.

Indicators had stopped working when I collected so that was an challenging journey home...However the following day, they did work, so happy days smile

Went to the classic car show at the NEC with my dad at the weekend and picked up a SuperLite badged wooden rimmed steering wheel. I've had a Mountey in there up till now, but that looks pretty rubbish.

My guess is the new Wood rimmed are probably made aboard, but it was only £100, so can't grumble. Cheaper than Ebay and its certainly lovely to hold and to look at smile



Still haven't managed to fit the sun visor and the garage is nervous about drilling the windscreen surround and I get that, so I might have to brave that one my self. Want to get it fitted as it was a present from my Mum.

Took my eldest round the block in it last night, just because I could and it felt pretty good.

To do list is getting shorter, which is nice.

Finish painting and fit the roof bars
Fit the sun visor
Trip back to garage to get the quick shifter fitted (Garage accidentally broke a part, so they have ordered a new one)
Fitting of speaker board (Long over due task)
Wiring up of 12v outlets

That will probably tie in with a few of the local shows, so looking forward to that.

Next year is an unknown. It goes VED free and its value will increase, so I may decide to call it a day at that point. An Engine swap will cost me the best part of £2-3k all in and I am just not sure if its worth it, especially as I can only take one passenger at the moment and even converting it to fold up Defender seats will be the best part pf £1k.

There was a bodyshop there who had a Consiton Series 3 on display that was their show car. Amazing bodywork and much better than when it left the factory. Well past what it was intended for biggrin

There were also some nice G-Wac Discoveries on display too.

I could have driven to the show in the series but it would have taken twice as long and I would wold have been deaf by the time I got there. They are so far removed from modern vehicles, its ridiculous. My eldest asked where the window switch was and laughed when I told him he had to slide the window across having broken a nail trying to undo the so called lock biggrin

So they have been trying to sell in for well over a year then 😀.

Another minor achievement this evening. Squeezed it in the garage 🙂

We had the new garage door fitted over 3 years ago and even then I was relying on width measurements of the Series taken from an Australian website...

Mine is running Defender mirrors which do actually fold unlike the standard fixed arm mirrors so that made it a but easier. Defender mirrors also allow you to actually see behind you too (novel!)

Pleased it fits as we are going on holiday soon as didn't want to leave it on the driveway even with a wheel clamp and steering lock.

Just a small job this weekend. Also bought this at the classic car show in Birmingham. Yes, its not period correct, but I really don't like the square ones and yes I am an AA member. We tent to alternative between RAC and AA depending on what offers are on the NHS site biggrin

Sadly I ruined this badged by accidentally grinding the face when trying to remove one of the seized screws, so will probably end up buying another one at some point.

Anyways, it was a satisfying five minute job. Does make me want to refurn the old grill though as the replica grills looks horrible compared to the originals.

Not been a lot of progress on the Series over the last month or two apart from the odd but of electrical work.

Connected the first of my two ground cables for the rear cabin light and 12v outlets. Thankfully there was already a cable path that was relatively easy to follow.

Made a start on the wiring for the audio and tested it on the bench with a small battery. For such a compact amp, it works really well. Decent sound quality too and that was with the speakers laying on a bench so no boxing at all.

Made up and painted some spacers for the amp so the cubby box lid stay still fitted. Yes I know the best place for the amp isn't in the cubby, but I much prefer it hidden and not on show.

Aux fuse box is also coming on nicely too. May end up relocating this box to the underseat storage as I will probably have to move the battery there eventually if I go down the V8 or 300tdi route. Trying to keep the cabling as neat as I can so I can easily remove the battery from the tray.







Got a couple of 4in speakers coming from Amazon and some $2 spacers from AliExpress, so will eventually fit those in the seatbelt top mount trim panels. I'm hoping this will all produce enough noise for me to actually hear any music. Trying to purchase as much as I can from AliExpress now as first show is 27th July, so got plenty of time.

Also on the hunt for a new alpine window roof, as the current roof has a few battle scars and also, fitting a headlining is much easier if I take the roof off and ideally I don't want to put the current one back on. Would much prefer an alpine window roof. Safari roof would be great l, but they are rare and expensive now.

Are actual holes on that rear cross member? Picture makes it hard to tell. If there are holes, then it might fail an MOT as they are near the spring hangers.

If its just surface rust, then I would:

1. Remove the grab handles if you can
2. Give it a good clean an check over to see if there are any actual hole. Don't forget to check inside
2. Apply 2 coats of some good old fashioned red oxide from Hammerite or even Screwfix
3. Then apply Chassis in one (CIO) from Buzzwelld. This is what I painted my rear cross member with and its a really nice finish and easy to apply too. If you have any issues finding it on the Buzzweld site, then contact Craig on the Buzzweld FB group as he owns/runs Buzzweld and is very helpful.

You can re-attach the grab handles with new bolts and I'd paint those as well. If you do have holes in the cross member, then they can be saved by a welder. New Cross Members aren't expensive, but the labour can be a day ish to remove old one and fit a new one.

So, after a lot of faff, the front speakers are now fitted in the seat belt trim panels. Was limited in size due to the depth available behind the panel, so had to go with Vibe 4in speakers from Amazon and even that required 10mm spacers from Ali Express (Only $3 delivered!)

The original speakers came with a silver/black finish which I didn’t like, so sanded them down and painted the grills silver and the outer rings satin black. These match the rear speakers too.

Made up a loom and hand wrapped it. These include cables for the load bay light. I can now see why AutoSparks charge so much for their looms as it’s a slow process wrapping the cables and laying them out, let alone feeding them though the car.

My cables run in the roof channel and behind one of the trim panels and end where the centre cubby is.

Next job is securing the speaker board in the roof. Made up some right angle brackets and painted those (Not sure why I bothered if I’m honest) The speaker board stays up there on its own without fixings, so I am tempted to just wedge it up there and not bother with the fixings. My only concern is the Series ride is pretty harsh and I don’t want to come clattering down as soon as I go over a speed bump biggrin

Because of the cable route I used, I now need to run cables back to the rear light switch and forward again to the new fuse aux box. Been putting this off as it will involve crawling under the car and trying to find the best route. I’m hoping I can feed some of the cables through the gaps between the spars that support the rear load bay.







Trying to rein in the spending on the Series and these were made from steel box section that was left my the previous owners of our current house. OK, I had to cut it up and paint it all, but I don't mind that.



Still got several more looms to make as well and the crawl under the Series to fit it. Suppose I should get the car up on axel stands so I can at least crawl under the thing without banging my head!

I did think about that, but didn't want anything on display in the car and even if I had gone with a head unit, I'd still need to do all the wiring anyway and the wiring has been the thing thats the real headache.
