Scratch built GT40 finally running

From the rare colour photos I've seen, the tub looks just like the factory ones. What colour is it?
Even the black McLaren/Amon car had a dark blue tub, but I have seen some very expensive models where they have used black. Of course in 1966 the body colours were constantly changing from race to race.

Oh wow, what an awesome read! Seems to be coming together somewhat now!
Where did you get your exhaust coated? I need mine doing in the coming months and costs etc seem to be all over the place when looking online!
Thanks,
Scott
I'm in New Zealand, so my coater is probably not much use to you sorry.Where did you get your exhaust coated? I need mine doing in the coming months and costs etc seem to be all over the place when looking online!

As for the tub colour, yes, it is a match for the factory colour. I can't recall the code off the top of my head but I can find out if you wish.

Thanks but it's only for a kerbside kit (of the McLaren/Amon car of course) so precious little of the tub will be visible; I can get a decent enough match from photos and will need to lighten it a touch anyway for scale effect.Looking forward to updates on your build.
John has all the sensors installed (water temp, oil pressure, oil temp and one for a low oil pressure warning light), and has moved the EWP controller to beside the voltage regulator behind the driver's seat. Makes it more accessible than where it was beside the EWP. (No idea why all the pictures have been rotated???)
Great progress.
On a GT40 related note I was fitting my doors and then discussing with a bunch of other GT40 replica builders how lopsided all the replicas are...allegedly due to how asymmetrical the original that ole Ken Attwell took the moulds from.
One said that FAV had to take an inch off the bottom of the nearside door to get them to fit!
Out of curiosity, how symmetrical is your body? The GTD based body on mine is ~10mm longer on the left sill, the left door is 8mm longer etc.

I haven't done any detailed measurements, but it is certainly asymmetrical. Had to crank the right hand side of the rear deck up about 50 mm to get the snorkels looking level and the doors are certainly not mirror images of each other. As I recall the front wheel arches are also not perfectly aligned with each other and have slightly different dimensions.
I read somewhere that the lack of symmetry was one of the clues as to how authentic a car was. Make of that what you will.

I’m basing my entire build on that premise... As for authentic, the old classic they only made 100 originals and all 250 are still in existence springs to mind.
Between the Sbarro fakes, the ones with a replacement chassis...and then a new car built from the remains of the old chassis there are plenty of authentic "originals". Personally I don't think it matters as long as the history is documented and they're not claiming to be an original but all too many are.
On the subject of originals it is at least easy to spot the "kit" replicas like mine and Hoonigan's from the copies like yours (although the RCR's are trickier as they are I was told copied from an original) as the bodywork is noticeably different. Allegedly to make them different to avoid grief with Ford.
