Now not thought of one of those, I had that wheel on my old Morris! Steering wheel is sadly way down the list at the mo and had planned to go with the SGT one but the Mountney is certainly now an option time will tell however.

Next on the list of things to buy is:

Wiper Motor
AC
Loom
Cooling pipes
Heating pipes
Fuel lines
Clutch lines
Brake lines
Fuel tank plumbing
Peddle box

Subject to discussing with SGT I hope to order that lot next this side of Christmas biggrin very excited to start doing other mechanicy bits woohoo
Along with doing some engine work and sorting out the dash board, fitting dials etc I should be kept busy for at least the next 6 months or so, and allow me to save up for the next bits...

How you getting on now, is your chassis finished yet?

Nearest wheel I've found to the 'originals' other than the Moto-lita which at £270 I felt was a little pricey and if the forum is to be believed still isn't 'original'.

Not done anything for about a month due to work and holiday to Florida.
Also need to order some more steel tubing, I've run out.

Did pick up my heater/AC unit while out there though

Good work though, it's looking really good. Hope mine looks half as good!
Holliday in Florida, wish you had said wink I've just ordered a set of pistons from the states.

That AC looks just like the one SGT supply not sure of the make but CBS do it too, it's about £1200 from SGT inc compressor, rad, condenser and connections etc, but I bet muuuch cheaper in the states though...
AC was something I was not originally going to go with as trying to do this on as tighter budget as possible but I think after discussing it with a few people it is not really an option but a necessity, so will have to bite the bullet.

Well the chassis is pretty much done now, just one inspection cover to be mounted on the N/S sill in the morning biggrin
Also fitted hand brake lever and I collect the peddle box next week which is the next bit for me to fit, not gonna go quite as quick as I hoped in the next six months though as Mrs hoonigan has her eye on a caravan which will end up using a fair chunk of my remaining build money rolleyes so I will be funding the build hand to mouth sooner than I thought, but on the bright side it will save me loads on not having to pay for holidays abroad wink

Top work.

What is the budget for something like this?
Thanks but I'll tell you the same as I tell Mrs Hoonigan, £10.00 every thing costs £10.00.... whistle

Well I decided I needed to raise my compression from 9.2:1, as was worried I would loose my low end torque, so old pistons out...

And new pistons in, this should get me up to 11:1, much better!

And heads on, not torqued yet though as need to get some sealant for the water jacket bolts bolts.

And yes they cost £10.00......... whistle

Well progress has been slow of late but I have got a bit done:

Fitted some fibreglass panels each side of the dash to seal the fuel pipes from the cabin (IVA requirement) absolute sod to get them them fitted and involved lots of swearing but got there in the end. Into these I have mounted access panels and the fuse board.

Spent ages on these parts and then realised they will never be seen when the dash is in rolleyes but I know they look nice...

Also got the steering column fitted including FIA quick release boss (just like a real racing car) driving which in turn has allowed me to start to position the peddle box, I think it is about right now, trying to get it as far to the right as possible to straighten up the driving position.

[url]

Once the peddle box is in it will be time to start wiring and plumbing, should be fun!

That's really nice...

but...

Have you really thought this through?

If you blow a fuse you're going to have to pull the dash to replace it!
Nah, I hope it's not as bad as it looks, plenty of room to get in and that is not the dash I'm using it's just for mock up, It's where all the SGT's have them but I will double check with them...

It's pedal, not peddle. (sorry, but started to wind me up).
Going well though. Great work. I wish I had the time and funds to do that. A gt40 is one of my dreams.
Calm down dear, if you get wound up by things as trivial as that you are four an early grave.... I'm sure if you look their are loads of words I have got equally wrong and I would hate to be the cause of you're stress wink

Dave,

Taking inboard what you said and after a visit to SGT I can reassure you all I have indeed made a great big cock up and it will not work with the fuse board where it is rolleyes Looks like I have a bit more work to do, and it looked so good too....banghead
In my defence though it would appear I'm not the only one to have gone this route and much easier to fix now than further down the line.

Well progress has been very slow of late as had a lot on at home but I thought I would post a small up date...

Got the pedal box in its final position and bolted in place

I was struggling to fit the wiper motor as since the chassis was designed IVA decided the fuel pipes had to be enclosed, This was got over by mounting the fibre glass panels (where I mounted my fuse board) to seal them off but that also took up the mounting place for the wiper motor so a bit of adaption was required and a new mounting plate welded in.

Managed to pick up a Moroso sump and a Performer RPM intake manifold too, a bit grubby but after 20mins of bead blasting it came up quite well.

And last night I stated to put the front panels back in and enclose the pedal box. I have decided to move the fuse box and relays under the bonnet too, they will be going on the right hand side with the washer bottle mounted between them and the pedal box, I have had to order some new bits to make this work relay and fuse holders etc as I want the wires hidden behind the dash which hopefully should keep everything accessable as well as looking look clean and tidy too, I may even get a nice alloy washer bottle..

Unsure whether to fit the angle trims I made around the pedal box or not, sometimes I like them and sometimes not????

Cheers, steering wheel is a light weight race one whistle

Not really worthy of an update but I have fitted the fuse board and popped a few panels back on to give me a feel for the finished thing, alloy wash bottle will fit between pedals and fuse board, then on to fit A/C, cooling pipes and rad in next I think! though I do change my mind....

Not sure what the wiggly lines are that are appearing on random panel all over the car, just the ally corroding I guess? frown

Well slowgress is being made....

Over the last few evenings I have made some brackets to hold the fans onto the radiator, I really did not want to use the plastic push through fixings that come with the fans and think this is a much nicer solution. Many hours were also spent cutting and fileing aluminium angle to make a couple of brackets to hold the radiator in and also an infill for the bottom of the radiator which will hopefully hide all the electrics and also fills in a big gap between the radiator and the front floor panel, there is still a gap on the LHS though but this is for the AC pipes to go past the rad to the AC radiator when it's mounted.

Picked up the cooling pipes today and have started fitting them, lots of shiny stainless steel and silicon smile really quite pleased so far but it all needs to come out again as there are one or two areas that require as a small amount of fettling before I'm totally happy, anyway here are some pics.....

Been plugging way in the garage and the front is getting there!

Fuse and relay board in and wired, cooling pipes, AC pipes, brake pipes and clutch pipes done, level sensors fitted, oh and shiny shiny washer bottle fitted cool It all has to come apart again as battery cables need drilling through, rack needs refitting and horn needs fitting, hence no clips on the cooling pipe and missing trims but as I said it it's getting there...

South Coast meet at Hoonigan's?!

I'll drop you a PM fella. Progress is looking good, must be slightly frustrating getting things perfect knowing you're going to have to remove/rejig/refit.

Saw what looked like the grp bodywork of a gt40 on the roof of an suv going towards Havant a while ago - assumed it was either you taking it for paint, or someone who'd just visited Jago in Chi...
Not my body, don't even own one yet...

Only discovered this thread yesterday after your recent update. You are doing a great job. Being born in '86 I remember growing up watching "Home Improvement" and Tim Allen was building a Hot Rod in his garage. I have loved the idea ever since.

Now the father of 2 small boys I am sold on the idea of a father/sons project - even/especially if that takes 10 years to complete.

Interesting to note the total cost you could expect as others have mentioned. Even at 40k taking a long term view and paying monthly it's not so expensive when you consider the end result, but also the enjoyment and satisfaction of building something yourself.

You seem to be enjoying it (so far!). Good luck with the rest of it!

Bookmarked.

86! rolleyes you kids!!! wink I have ten years on you but used to love that program too, and you're right £40k+ sound a hell of a lot of cash but when broken up over many years it is manageable (for me at least) without Mrs Hoonigan noticing and getting into debt, I am in no rush if it takes 5 years great but goes over then so be it, one year in and I'm still loving it! smile

To be honest you don't need one yet either. Mine is just getting in the way and filling up a garage.
Yup, I have no intention of buying my body until pretty much everything else is done inc engine and beatbox in, the only problem I foresee doing it this way will be the mess that body work creates.

Have you completed your chassis yet?

Slowgress update time...

Front now pretty much done though I have now realised the pedal box will need to be removed AGAIN! as I didn't realise I needed to fabricate some sort of bracket to stop the accelerator coming too far forward or too far back, a little frustrating to say the least and a job I'm putting off for a while now.

Started plumbing and wiring to the rear of the car, brake, clutch, loom, power, rad to header breather and a 10 core multi core with a coax in for future use and just in case I ever decide a reverse cam is needed (unlikely though)

Not all permanently fixed yet with P clips etc as don't think I'll drill the loom and power into the engine bay until the engine is ready to go in and I can measure it to get them just right.

Clutch pipe in position, just the rear brake lines to do then plumbing finished, I had no idea how difficult I would find this stage, the 1/4" clutch pipe is an absolute bd to work with but I have managed to get (so far) all the pipes is so far with no unnecessary joins or kinks which I'm pretty pleased with.

All of the wiring and plumbing is hidden when the car is finished but it's nice to make look good where possible.

And that's about it for now, next job when this bit is finished is to mount the condenser then all being well it's engine and gearbox time though still on the lookout for and buying bits for this, I would like to see it built and in the car early next year but don't hold me to it... smile

Ala Aston Martin One77. wink I'd be as OCD about that stuff too.

As much as I'd like to do something like this, it's becoming apparent that these kits aren't as straightforward as "here's the kit; go put all the bits together" but more "here's the kit; go put all the bits together that you can; then jig and re-jig a bunch of stuff, fabricate some stuff that you didn't even know you needed and then you'll be good". Have I got that right? wink
Haha exactly right, def not a kit of parts but also not a huge challenge just lots and lots of little challenges....
