After spectacularly losing a "bet" which had me tied into attempting to purchase one type of car, I was free to choose whatever kind of vehicle I wanted to and buy myself a Christmas present.

So begins the story of my newest Rover.

I have bought a 2003 plate MG ZS 180 showing 83k on the clock for £425. Almost a month's tax, and some MOT left.
It cost £60 to fill up, and I chucked a friend £50 for his fuel. We drove it back from Croydon to Luton, covering mostly motorway but peeling off for interesting roads through Chesham, Amersham and up over the Downs.
Aside from the smell of petrol, she performed flawlessly. A couple of lights out, unable to fix due to bad placement of a CD changer (It came with a CD changer!) but nothing major, I thought.

Coming out of Slip End towards Luton there is a rather tasty tunnel, to which I applied some PH logic and had a 2nd gear blat through, before breaking heavily for the junction at the end. This breaking heavily acted upon a loose engine mount, which in turn pulled the top coolant hose free from the engine.
Apparently, the cloud of steam behind me was quite spectacular!
Unable to fix at the side of the road, we let The HoonShed cool down and limped it back to an overnight location nearby.

In the morning, my Mum's drive yet again saw some Rover action:

We replaced the circlip with a jubilee clip, refitted the hose and got it back to my garage, where The HoonShed is currently waiting on parts.

List of things to do is now thus:
Wheel nuts - Bloody thing came with only three out of four on the wheels eek . I found two in the glovebox but everything is rounded, included the wrench. The previous owner was in to his alloys, it seems, and in changing them back has not done me any favours.
Power steering pump - Known at sale, is making an awful noise. New parts do not exist, need to remove the old one and find an eBay replacement.
Engine mounts - Can't have it shaking things loose again
The smell of fuel - Not sure how to diagnose where the leak could be coming from, I could do with some advice on this please.
Lightbulbs! - Self explanatory
Better brake pads and new fluid - As above
Service - Well, as much of a service as it would get with me doing it. Service history ended a while ago, and it needs a going over.

So, at week one of HoonShed ownership, it stands at this:
Cost: £425
Hoons: 0.5
Trackdays: 0
Status: VOR!!

More to follow!
Steve

Semi-broken ones regularly go for under a grand at the moment! Easy enough to fix up really, and the V6 can sound pretty good!

This one hasn't got magnetic bumpers though, hopefully. Pesky MX-5's....

I'm actually considering cutting my losses with this now, the power steering pump issue is a bit more complex and costly than I first thought, and the fuel line issue would have to be fixed at a garage.

I'm still waiting for the V5 to come through, so I have a couple of weeks to think of what I am going to do with the MG.

It's not looking very hopeful at the moment though. As nice as it is to have an MG-shaped storage box in my garage, it's never going to do me any favours.

I have to see if I consider it worth saving first! Thanks for the advice though.
