It's certainly a strange one. Will know once the mechanic has had a better look at the engine. At the moment the mechanic seems to be suggesting an AOS failure however this was replaced at the last rebuild. I suppose it could have been a faulty unit?
Is there a way of finding out if it was faulty? And possibly asking for them to stump up.
I know PH is often against the compensation idea but surely after paying out once/twice now, you ve got ask the question.

Well I'd like to think that the manufacturers warranty would be sufficient. The car ws smoking the day after I collected it (which is why I originally didn't think it would be the AOS)And possibly asking for them to stump up.

UPDATE:
There isn't one, it's still with the mechanic. Although I did do some calculations; Of the 21 weeks I have had the car available (less snow days etc) since I purchased it in December 2012, it has been in the garage 14 of those weeks. I have completed 252 miles at a cost of >£18 per mile and since it has been away the MOT has expired.
I still wouldn't change a thing.

Good man, great outlook on the whole situation. Best of luck. There isn't one, it's still with the mechanic. Well, early signs are good. No smoke on start up, no smoke after a spirited drive and even managed 29.5 mpg on the way back from Stockton to South Shields. The mechanic changed all of the breather pipes from the crackshaft up, as well as fitting a new AOS which seems to have done the trick.
It'll take a few weeks or so until I regain the confidence to start enjoying the car but hats off to the mechanic who has had a lot on as well as my car and certainly knows his stuff.

Now I am beginning to enjoy the car I can start doing my own thing, so today I fitted an AUX cable and refreshed the leather with some dye.
First, the stereo...
Stuff needed: eBay AUX input cable for Becker CDR32 and Becker removal tools:
Use them to get the stereo loose:
Take the CD holder out first, then the coin tray thingy. They both just pull out by hand:
Plug AUX cable in the back and route down the back. Quite fiddly but it does get there:
Drill hole in back of coin tray thingy (size doesn't matter, just remember not to make a massive hole in the rubber so that when fitted it looks cleaner and tighter. In fact just pierce it with a screwdriver or the like:
Feed the wire through
and voila!
