Wanted to close this thread out. Owned this car for two years, spent no more money on it after replacing consumables in the first couple of months, sold it for not much less than I paid, and it was bloody great. Liked it so much, we bought a fourth gen CRV as our main family car.

Really recommend these 2nd gen CRVs. They're tough and well built, they have more interior room and boot space than the newer models thanks to the boxy shape, and they manage OK on snowy hills and rough farm tracks. Get a base model and you even get proper black plastic bumpers that are durable and scuff resistant. The petrol engine is a bit thirsty and the barn door aerodynamics don't help it at motorway speeds (I managed mid 20s mpg in mixed use) but otherwise I can't see any drawbacks.
