So when is the 'rocket box' being installed? smilesmilesmile
When the 1300 crossflow goes back in wink
Well it would be faster with a 1300 cross flow than the motor that's in it now! wink

Not stopped yet.
Check out my beautiful new WRC crossmember and S12b inspired TCAs. These are similar spec to the previous design but Dave decided to take a different route to reduce the chances of binding. Custom made to fit the OEM caster block, EN36 steel pins, T45 & S515 construction.
You'll see they're now hanging from a gorgeous T45 WRC lightweight crossmember.

Just love this stuff. biggrin

Its getting there chaps, unfortunately like all these things it takes time. The car is being built in a live shop where real active WRC cars are worked upon. So competition cars sometimes have to take priority to me if they need the odd part worked upon.

My build will resume shortly smile

Thought I'd post up the feature photos, these are the last pro shots she ever had in her old dress.

Words and photos by Steve Hall.

Here are the images from the rest of the shoot.

Those that don't follow the build....

Her current state. On her way to becoming a full S8 WRC shell. wink

Wow! This is going to be awesome. Good work and nice looking car. My old bugeye was dyno'd at 320bhp and it felt stupidly fast at the time for a road car. I cant even imagine what this must be like.

Keep up the good work!

Frayz, any reason for not rotating the intake manifold? Did the WRC cars of the time have it forward facing or not?

Cheers guys.

At the time when I was building the motor I saw no real benefit of rotating the manifold as in reality there is little other than visual aesthetics to be gained. The WRC cars ran a magnesium inlet that was just orientated to the front as that's how their pipe runs were routed.
There's much talk and argument that reducing the length of pipe work will increase boost response. However in reality, the loss of a couple of feet of pipe work is unnoticeable in the real world.
Seeing as the cooling package on the new build will be WRC, I may spin my existing manifold. However I'm inclined to leave it at the moment as I've other things to worry about.

The motor works well as it is, I want to concentrate on the actual chassis for now. In reality, even with a stock engine, it's going to be pretty handy. If I could, I'd like to actually go for a smaller turbo and drop the power to about 500bhp. That's plenty in a road car.

Smaller turbo? Well the WRC did use a garrett GT30rs based core so if you want to be authentic, and not spend loads of money for the race version, you should fit a smaller one. smile

Don't get me wrong, the 35R is nice and not exactly laggy. However I built the motor before all these billet GTX type turbos became readily available, so my 35R is stock 3582R. Id quite like to drop down to a 30R equivalent in the TS BorgWarner EFR range.

500bhp with monster torque and boost response would be the right choice for the car in its new spec.
Plenty of time for all that though, so not exactly high on my "to do" list lol smile

Loosely, very very loosely based.... The TR30R is a £7k turbo these days!

And the rest for an IHI RX rocket based turbo.
I think the RX cores designed to cope with the rocket are around £18k.

Unfortunately not in my ballpark haha biggrin

The GTC combustor is actually fairly kind on turbo's compared to the uncontrolled exhaust manifold burn air bypass ALS! As the System operates with closed loop turbine speed control and runs with excess air, the dynamic and thermal loads are really not as bad as you might think ;-)

No you're quite right, however it's the 4 bar of boost created at idle that a normal turbo wouldn't be that happy about lol.
ALS creates huge shock loading on the shaft and turbine. The rocket is basically a jet engine. biggrin

Either way, I can't afford it. wink
