Right, disconnect violet and orange wires and test from the alarm side, violet should flash on lock, orange on unlock.

Yellow/black & grey/black will have a good earth if there is a motor in the door and the violet and orange wires will rest at neg and only pulse pos when armed/disarmed. orange/white & violet/white will have a permanent live to them.

The motor in the door basically does the job of moving the interior button up or down and does this with 2 relays that rest at neg and pulse the power to one wire for lock and the other for unlock.

If it is resting one at pos, the chances are that the relay in the alarm is dodgy and has burnt the motor out as it should only be a 0.5s pulse.

Motors are cheap from the bay/Maplins etc and are all the same (the aftermarket ones) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-2-Wire-Solenoi...

Thanks for the reply RA. I'm getting the pulse ( though it is 3 seconds ) on the test lamp from the violet. But when the alarm is off, the orange is permanently lighting the test lamp. Is this a sign that the alarm unit is faulty?

The solenoid in the drivers doors is this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290926980510?ssPageName=...

When i supply 12v to this on the bench it isn't working.

It makes sense that a permanent supply to the solenoid has burnt it out, plus its over 20 year old too.

On a different note, does anyone know what this black plastic barrel in the top heater hose does?

Are you testing the orange & violet when disconnected from the car loom? You may get back feed from the cars own central locking ecu. 3 seconds is not too bad though, I'd get another and put it in if it's not working on the bench.

3 wires will be the switch, you will have a common and this will connect with 1 of the wires when it is up and 1 when it is down (this part is obviously working as it works when locked with the key) the other 2 are the motor and reversing the polarity will make the motor move the actuator up or down.

The black thing looks a bit like a bypass?

Nice looking car. For the scratches on your door in the first pic, I wouldnt bother with chipsaway - these could be carefully touched in with a brush and you'd barely notice.

I've seen C4 mentioned on forums before. Have you used it and is it easy to apply?

Thanks Johnny. If it were only the one scratch then i would touch it up myself. But there a few, and i know my limits with paint.

RA500, thanks for your time and knowledge. I'll order a new solenoid and see where i go from there.

Very little to update, been too busy with work. New key and the boot lock trim both arrived in 5 days from Saab in Sweden.

The service kit has arrived and i now have a few weeks off, so progress should be smart.

Nothing exciting to add, but got the engine serviced earlier today.

The rotor arm doesn't fit. so i'll get another picked up. And waiting on HT leads to arrive. Only issue is the CEL ( check engine light ) has come on. I've obviously upset something under the bonnet.

I'll have a look at it tomorrow and also get the fuel filter fitted.

Does anyone have a spare airflow meter i can borrow?

Got the new filter fitted this afternoon.

The CEL light is still on, but it is now going off occasionally.

I spent some time looking for the paperwork, and got it into some order. Think i've found nigh on all the receipts and dealer handover pack.

Working away again next week, but have a few weeks holiday after that. I want to get the wheels off and check over the bakes.

Sorry for the bump. I'm using this thread as a diary hence the boring picture content.

Got a lot done today ; new cap and HT leads fitted. Check engine light now off. Alarm and remote locking now working ( new solenoid ). Fan belt tightened. Waiting on a rotor arm and that'll be most of the engine service complete.

Probably be at least a week before i'm avialable to work on the car again.

Thanks

Not a great deal to mention. I've had very little time to work on the car recently what with work and fixing up an old moterbike.

Firstly, thanks to the posters with all the help and advice with the faulty alarm / central locking. It's all fixed now and working as new.

The only jobs done since the last posts was fitting new chrome strips to the bumper ( supplied by Steve Lewis ) and a new battery. The first two batteries lasted 20 years, so i cant complain!

Hopefully i'll manage to get the heater working this week. I'm thinking this is down to the bypass valve playing up and the matrix needing flushed out.

Cheers

Cheers L.O.H. I enjoy pottering away in the garage. Between this and the Honda it keeps me occupied on my days off.

The heater has been very poor for a while, so this was my next job.
I flushed and backflushed the radiator, block and matrix several times. The coolant that came out was fairly clean though. I also removed the header tank and gave that a good clean too.

I then removed the heater bypass valve and repaced it with 22mm copper pipe.

Lastly, fitted a new Saab thermostat. ( The black t pieces is the old bypass valve )

The heater is now working great, warms up very quickly. The only bad point of the day is that i snapped the rad drain plug. I'll pick one of these up in the next few days hopefully.

If i get time next week, i mean to change the 5 brake flexis ( they were advised on the MoT ). Change the gearbox oil. Part of the hood frame ( where it clamps against the windscreen frame ) has oxidised, so i'll paint that. If i get anywhere near all that done then i'll investigate the slow electric windows.

Hope you all enjoyed those exciting pictures.

Thanks.

Thank you for the replies guys. I enjoy posting these updates as much as i enjoy working on the car.

Last week i sheared the plastic radiator drain plug just before i refilled the cooling system. It's an odd size UNF thread and i couldn't source a replacement locally. I used alraldite (sp?) to glue a bolt head to the old plug. I then filled the system with coolant and ran it up to temperatue. Heater is still furnace like. I also sprinkled a good dose of talcum powder under my repaired drain plug to test for leaks. I've got another plug coming and i'll keep that in the spares pile.

Next i drained the gearbox oil with a Pela vacum pump ( the later 900's did't have a gearbox drain plug ) and refilled with 10/40 oil. Access is good and its a straight forward job. I'll double check the level tomorrow ( there's a dipstick on the filler plug ). Spilled half the oil on the floor whilst pouring the old oil out ...

The o/s/f electric window has been slow for a while. In fact, when i tried it today it wouldn't budge. This made removal of the regulator and motor from the door a bit tricky.

The motor was seized. I've stripped it and half cleaned it but it still feels tired and gritty. Rather than waste anymore time on it i'll probably look for a better unit.

You can see the last few teeth on the regulator are stripped. This explains why it really struggles the last inch when getting raised. There's a few Saab folk around who'll cut out the worn teeth and weld in new ones. Or you can buy a whole new quadrant from ebay. I feel it's a bit too steep at £70 though. I'll sleep on it.

Last job in the garage today was to paint part of the roof frame, the ( header rail? ) part that clamps the roof frame to the top of the screen. It has oxidised and drops dandruff like dust over you when you raise / lower the roof.

No pictures, but i sanded, masked and then painted with black smoothrite. I'll check tomorrow, but i dont think the paint has bonded that great with the aluminium rail. I may have to redo with a primer.

Don't know when i'll next get time, but the next task is to change over the 5 brake flexis and renew the brake fluid.

Thanks for looking.

Just a quick update. Double checked the gearbox oil and coolant levels and both spot on.

Got some aluminium primer this morning and got a couple of coats on the roof rail.

I've found the original Sony box for the radio too.

Be next week before i get any decent time in the garage. Agenda is ; paint rail, fit flexis and change brake fluid. Fit repaired regulator if it arrives in time.

Thanks for looking.
