Hi Lefty
I would prefer something that keeps some if not all of the rain out!!!!

Jaguar XJS is a possible or at a push a BMW 3 series Cabriolet. The roof from a 4 seat cabriolet would probably look better balanced. There must be others that would be a possible.

The shape of the door skin is not an issue - it can be changed. I would love to do a completely rounded screen but there is no point if I can't get it registered.

The glass you use must be marked R43 (etc). R43 was introduced in 1981 I believe so that would perhaps restrict your choice of donor unless it was a very popular model and glass is still available.
You could have a custom screen manufactured. Expensive but not cripplingly so.

Hi Steve

Good to see another reprobate is still up at this late hour.

It is not just the windscreen, but the side windows too. It would be nice to have leccy windows too.
Not overly keen on electric roof as these are alignment critical.
The XJS is not a bad donor candidate. But the door might be a bit short on the height front.

Your info is always useful so keep an eye on what I am doing, and put me right if I have gone outside the rules please.

But you were prepared to butcher a Roller
wink

I actually wasn't thinking of butchering anything. I'd have thought there were replacement parts available from whole body shells and glass houses. But that is a guess.

Funnily enough I haven't been past recently. The kids are back from uni and have been walking him when we're not off shooting. Also, that path is a bit muddy so I've been off taking advantage of someone else's land (mainly the RSPB at Fowlmere).

Apparently the housekeeper took him over to your farm and there was a shoot going on. She told me she had to drag the dog away as he was convinced he could/should stay with the guns.

Custom glass is very possible. Evanta got some made for their DB4 GT Zagato replicas. Ant Anstead is very approachable (even though he is on the telly and I'm sure e'd be happy to talk you through it and where he go his made. If you'd like, I can introduce him to you. He used to look after one of my cars and we still chat occasionally. He's mad keen on anything to do with cars so would probably want to come and have a look.

Oh. Another thought (though super rare).

Citroen Decapotable

It would have to be spare parts because destroying one of those is definitely a crime.

The mere mention of such a heinous act should be reported to the thought police...

That DS drop-top is just porn.

I love the DS in saloon guise too. I even saw one being driven through Aberdeen one day on my way to work; it was a beautiful car and was in such excellent condition.

DS is lovely but he said he wanted something he wouldn't mind chopping up. Doing that to a DS would be like lopping the nose off a supermodel.

Someone mentioned the Saab 900, how about a Saab 900 convertible?

Slightly wrap-around windscreen, elongated canvas roof, pillarless doors.....

that saab looks viable , i wonder about whether it possible to have the top 6 inches cut off the screen to make it look a bit slitty and wide?

Those Saabs are too lovely to destroy unless you get a real snotter.

That Saab looks like a good call to me! You could get a cheap one, and cut the body right back, just keep the bulkhead and windscreen structure and the door shuts. That way you maintain the alignment of the doors and bulkhead / screen etc.

With custom door skins, and some nice wings etc, i think that might work, and keeps the hard stuff (like a good door fit and lecy windows) to OEM std

I don't like the height or angle of the Saab windscreen.

I think the Audi may be a better bet.

The slant on the screen is better and it is shallower. The roof has a nicer shape too to my eye.
It may seem mad to chop up a car for just the screen, bulkhead, doors and roof. And it will need to be a reasonable car too. But getting those parts of the car right are a major issue.

I want to be able to use the finished car, and decent weather proofing is essential. Might even look for one with air-con, for those trips to warmer climates!!!

I will not be using the interior as this will need to be more in keeping with the art-deco exterior but it is amazing what you can hide!

What do you chaps (or gals) think?

Sounds like a plan to me.

Thousands of those things must have been written off in accidents, I very much doubt anybody will lose any sleep about one giving up its life for an epic project.

I won't.

I suspect the windscreen surround/pillar will be painted black so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb (or I might get them chromed (bling, bling)!!!).

If you fancy a bit more rake then an Ovlov V70 might work as well (early model is soft top)
