Again, to my eyes, the later post-facelift XJSs with the HE engine are much more attractive... got rid of that bloody awful vent behind the side windows for a start...

Or would Sir like a Zonda engine in his anonymous silver executive express/family wagon?

smokin

What that needs is some steel wheels and a diesel badge, then go barry-boy shaming...

hehe

A bit of maintenance. I bought two new front tyres on Tuesday; come Sunday one of them had a screw in it. Happily repairable.

I'm starting the boys on tools. Easy stuff at first. Next year I'll get them to slot a V12 under the bonnet.

Please do the V12 swap! This lovely old barge is begging for a proper engine in it...

Actually, the OM606 is a very fine engine indeed. It is smooth, efficient, strong and reliable. They last forever. I had it to bits for a timing chain and rails at about 260,000miles and it was unworn at the top and bottom. Were it to let me down, however, I have promised myself a turbo-charged OM606 together with a 722.6 five speed automatic transmission from a later w210 from www.dieselpumpuk.com . Nothing silly, just standard tune.

Yes - but it's still a bloody diesel. Vile things. Still, I'm full of admiration for what you've done to the rest of the car!

I always wear soft brown leather tassled loafers for working on the car. Except when I've just come in from work, in which case I wear a once-lovely navy wool suit and black toe cap oxfords...

New front discs and pads last week and an oil service.

This arrived yesterday. Not ready to be fitted for another couple of weeks.

500,000km attained today. The boy and I shall be affixing the badge to the grille just as soon as we get home.

There's nothing happening in 124 land at the moment, just faithful service. I'm not even adding many miles, what with the weather being so fair the 129 comes out.

Here we are herding sheep this morning.

My four year old and I changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, fuel pre-filter and the antenna mast this morning, all Merc parts. I bought 20 litres of 10w 40 semi-synthetic oil for £30 at Euro Car Parts the other day and had 2 litres already in stock (the car takes 7), so the whole business cost less than £50 and £20 of that was the antenna. The boy was genuinely helpful, holding stuff and passing tools. It was last serviced less than two months ago but it has done 5,000miles since then. We've got some heavy driving coming up so I thought I'd better see to it.
