Titivating my Mercedes 124
Discussion
He's good. I think he has come to love it like I do!
I didn't buy an interim run around in the end. Insufficient funds is the truth of it: there are just too many other things that want £1,500 off me (because that's the least of it when you include the tax and the insurance). And it has been a pleasure to use the SL. The weather has been nice and the children seem OK in the rear seats (although I do worry about this occasionally). It has a bad diff whine, but Baister says it is nothing to worry about.

Today was a good day for three reasons.
First, I managed to do Leeds city centre to Newcastle city centre in under 1hr30 in the r129. Without the diff exploding. This isn't a record but it is pretty speedy during the working day. (I did Leeds city centre to home, a further 30miles, in 1hr40 just this weekend, but it was the middle of the night.)
Second, I didn't have to order any parts. And I don't think I will have to tomorrow. The bleeding has almost stopped.
Third, the wings are back on, and the bonnet has been trial fitted, straightened out and prepared for painting. The Man reckons the used bonnet is on its original paint. I can't quite figure out what colour it was. Anyway, it'll be smoke silver soon.
It has all been sprayed with Bilt Hamber Dynax S50, too:
There is quite a lot of re-assembly now. I have all new headlamp and radiator mounting parts, various new plastic panels and all new pipework and clips for the headlamp wash wipe. The bonnet needs to be sound-proofed once it has been painted. Then the interior is coming out for a little bit of floor welding and for sound proofing. It'll be a fortnight yet.

Don't even contemplate getting rid of the car after this.
It's like nursing a sick child back to health, the bond will be even stronger when all is well again.
Have you read the rest of the thread? It's more like the 6 million dollar man! This is minor compared to the level of care taken so far, if not the expense. It's like nursing a sick child back to health, the bond will be even stronger when all is well again.
I think it's great, it makes me wonder how long I could realistically own a car before getting bored and looking for reasons to get something else. Probably not long enough to justify the costs in my case.
I couldn't replace it! It's a fantastic car to own, such a faithful servant.
I like to keep cars. I've had my r129 for 13 years; this car I've had for over four years now and it replaced a 320 TE bought in 2009. I'm not big into change! I have another big trip planned for the winter, to Provence and back. Even though it's an asthmatic normally aspirated diseasel, I'll be taking it on the Route de Napoleon.
The bonnet is now in primer. The Man seems to think it's a good used part. Not long now.

May as well chuck a turbo in there whilst your at it.
Comme ci? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-W210-300-3-0-TU...I think about it all the time. Maybe get those dieselpumpuk guys to turn the wick up to, say, 250bhp? But it is what it is: I love the fact that engine and transmission are original and unopened at 340,000miles.

Might be making this up, but I seem to remember something about the fact the right-hand drive w124's couldn't accommodate a turbocharger due to the steering column? Don't know how that w210 engine would be packaged, maybe its not an issue anymore.
Anyway, if it were me i'd leave it as is. Not many non-turbo diesels around these days, I think it has a charm to it
