Nice looking car that OP. The Ed30 is a fab looking car and much better looking than the standard Mk5 GTi.

I nearly bought a three door one a while back, but got pipped to the post and someone snapped it up whilst I went away to think about it.

Thanks... yes they are lovely, but just starting to get to that age where good maintenance is key to keeping it on the road.

Got a new downpipe and flexi going on soon then a trip to JKM to put it on the dyno and have the REVO map settings looked at. I think the fuel pump is struggling to keep up, so that might be another expense.

Nice car OP, wish I picked an ED30 over my R32 at the time! Can you not upgrade from solid discs on the rear?

Yes, the R32 setup it's a bolt on upgrade. Thought about it but never bothered. I am using the VW caddy rear callipers which have the same size piston as the R32 rear callipers but still use the GTI disc.

Set about fixing an oil leak from the cam cover gasket yesterday and given it a service.

Oil leak... bad.... hit a massive chunk of tarmac a few months ago... also bad. Lucky not to punch a hole in the DSG unit

Off with the cam cover

New Cam seal

New PCV Seal

New PCV

New rear PCV pipe, didnt need to do it just did it seeing as I was replacing everything

Nice and clean.... was rank with oil before hand.

An no errors too.

Car seems to run a lot quieter now, it was probably 1500 miles overdue.

Great tyre - got them on our Focus and Fiesta STs.

Great work on the car, good read too.

Thanks Podie.

Car went in today for a new 200cell cat as it keeps failing MOT. Whilst it was off the Dave a PowerValve replaced everything on the downpipe bar the flange and bend. A new ILOK chainmail flexi fitted which lots more flexible than the ones they used to use and was on mine previously.

Top new... bottom old. The flexi is about 3 times the length of that, its just a image I found on google.

Fingers crossed it passes its MOT in may.

PS4 are brilliant so far, really impressed with them and not a huge let down in terms of grip compared to the AD08R. They don't quite have the same stiff 'bite' feeling when cornering so I have lost a bit of 'these feel epic' but not a huge issue.

Took the car down to JKM rolling road a few days ago just to check the map and a general health check of the car. Its running fine, not making as much power as it could but its on the safe side as its done 130K now. It did make 316 last time, but I am pretty sure that was on higher settings.

I think it could make about another 10-15bhp by increasing the boost, it's only running a shade over 1.2bar, and it could be ~1.4bar on higher settings.

Diagnostic did bring up one issue. An intermittent fault on the Lambda probe which had not seen before. JKM cleared it and I thought it was fine until last night when I came up again throwing a EML, which needs sorting as MOT time soon.

A quick trip to ECP in Harrow and a cheeky deal resulted in getting an OEM Bosch sensor for £135 instead of £170. VW wanted £200

Old sensor

New sensor

I picked up on of those cheapo ELM wifi OBD2 dongles just for clearing codes and for 14 quid you cant go wrong. I did have a genuine VCDS cable but stupidly sold it a few years back.

Touch wood thats the last I am going to see of that error.

Stupid fking car!

:-)

Well I am glad all that fking about wasnt a waste of time.

MOT yesterday. No advisories. Not bad for a 12year old car.

Emissions were back to what they should be

The readings were 0.2 and 0.3 last year so it literally scrapped through by the skin of its teeth.

Nothing that exciting just using time off to get jobs sorted. I have had these parts for a while now so time to get them on.

Rear discs and pads. Rear wheel bearings. New brake dust shields.

180nm and 1/2 a turn on that bolt is hard work. Needed a better breaker bar really, but I managed it.

The bearings were not that bad, a little noisy... but they had 140,000miles on them so felt like they were due a change.... the grease looked fairly dirty.

Thats all for now.... it needs its 140,000 service.... new front ball joints.. new front discs and pads (ouch) and cambelt change. That should see it running perfectly again.

I suppose 4 years out of those last pads was quite good. These are 1/3rd the price so let’s see what happens.
