I'm not a massive fan of the wing I must say - you don't want the front end getting light at speed which I suspect the wing might do....

But a massive fan of the car in general!

Have you looked into maybe swapping out the live rear axle for some additional traction? Would be an interesting project, I know that some caterham style kit cars have IRS so there must be good designs out there.

Could even swap in a Jag rear end but I suspect that would be a bit too heavy
I did some [relatively] high speed runs the other day and it didn't feel anymore 'floaty' at high speed than it did before. I do plan on doing some slow motion videos with/without it on so that I can see how much 'squish' I get in the suspension.

In regards to the rear end, the live-axle system is actually one of the best for traction on smooth roads and drag racing. The IRS is newer, lighted but more suited to general road driving as it's a lot more forgiving. Live axles tend to skip at high speed, but I don't drive fast enough round corners on the road to worry about it. Live axles can also take a lot more abuse than the IRS counterpart and I'm not one for being mechanical sympathetic to the drive train.

Hello all.

There's been some more changes.

I went back to the whole aero thing and decided to fit a front wing. I've no 'fitting' pictures as I did a video that's now on YouTube.

The video is here -

Opinions welcome as always! I quite like it. It won't be for the road. I'll save it (front and rear wings) for the track and do some back to back testing. If the car is no faster or it slows it down, I'll get rid of them.

Oh, and this weekend.. this happened smile Be sure to keep an eye out on the 'Officially Gassed' YouTube channel later in the week for the video.

You Sir are certifiable. I bloody love it.

I don't think the cops will though, although i doubt they will catch you unless they have a helicopter on standby.
Thanks I'll take that :-)

Ariel Atom's can come with a front wing so not sure how illegal it is. Anyway, track use only (unless I'm going to a show or something, ha)

Did you just attach the wings to it ?

Couldn't they make it do some really weird stuff at speed, like take off ?
Watch the YouTube videos ;-) They won't come off. Been tested to 120mph and stayed on so they should be OK.

I just watched your video on OG and you come across as a real petrolhead! I love the car and I'm especially a fan of heavily turbo charged engines and the noises they make! Poor old OG looked terrified driving it!

On another note, this is about as close as you can get to riding a motorbike it seems to me, do you ride at all? Reminds me of the first time I opened the throttle fully on a S1000RR, I don't think I stopped smiling for about a day after... well except for when I was slightly worried about the speed that thing generates and getting caught by a speed trap!

Brilliant build on the car anyway!
Never even been on a bike. Parents wouldn't let me have one so I played with cars instead

After the feature with Officially Gassed, it was time to finally get the geo and corner weighting done. It's been over 5 years since I'd had this done so it was probably due.

The last time the car was weighed it was just under 700kg, as time has gone on and parts have been replaced for lighter versions, I have been weighing them and my rough calculations put me somewhere between 620-630kg.

The final weigh in was

620.5kg wet. VERY happy with that and it puts the bhp/ton at 605.9 (assuming 376bhp when I know it's more because it was spinning).

For those of you that watched the OG video, you'll know that we didn't get chance to test out my 0-60 time. I decided to buy my own Dragy and see what I could do.

Despite many attempts (over 65+ back to back) the best I could manage was 4.23 seconds, which I'm disappointed with. I've used online gear calculators and I should be able to comfortably hit 60 in 2nd gear but for some reason I can't get more than 56-57mph and the change to 3rd is costing me time.

It is what it is I guess, I didn't make it to be a 0-60 car. I did some 0-100mph and that came in at low 9.9s which puts it on-par with a 911 turboS so it's doing OK once it gets rolling smile

As is clear from this thread, I can't leave things alone, so I'm already looking at ways to get the weight down under the magic 600kg figure. First up is swopping the 3mm steel floor under the engine bay for 1.5mm aluminium sheet.

Could you try some larger rear tyres to make the gearing just that bit different enough to hit 60 in 2nd?
A mate said he'd lend me some 17s to see if it made a difference. Worth a shot just to get that magic 3.xx figure I guess.

The last day of August is MOT time for the car.

No issues, as you'd expect smile

Went out to the local landmark. Like Blackpool tower but without the lights, stag-dos and hen-dos.

Spent some more time on the local roads

Had an issue with some blown out exhaust manifold gaskets. Buy crap, buy twice. Cometic ftw.

Then I decided the car weighed too much.

First up, replacing my 3mm steel engine under-tray with aluminium.

Old one

New one

Nice 2.2kg saving for an afternoon.

On to more expensive things. My front brakes were heavy and I've always wanted 13s on the car but the brakes were too big to fit 13s.
As I'm running Cortina uprights it made sense to swop out the steel hubs for aluminium ones too.

The brakes were replaced with 265mm solid (from vented) wildwoods.
Wheels are now 13" compomotive cars with Avon ZZR tyres.

The car looks quite purposeful now I think?

The overall process saved just under 13kg of weight - but importantly it's all unsprung and rotational so should make a good improvement to the way the car handles, brakes and accelerates. The rear tyres are now also 215 instead of 195 so the extra rubber should help as well.

I did a YouTube video of the process -

Subscribers and followers welcome as always smile

Why get smaller wheels?

As someone who doesn't really know too much about kit car building other than lighter weight what's the advantage of smaller wheels and less low profile tyres?
As above, a number of reasons.

Primarily weight saving over 15s. 7s are also designed with 13" wheels in mind so they drive all round better on 13s than 15s.

Bigger sidewall works better for a light car. With a small sidewall the tyre doesn't have enough flex for the low weight.

There are also literally hundreds of scrubbed tyres available to buy from people that race 7s. So it's a good money saver as well.

...that shift to third is just dropping you into no-mans land it seems, car just seems to lose all of its energy!

I'm sure some different gearing would see you easily into the mid-low 3s.
You're right, good ears and eyes! I noticed an issue with the accel-enrich at high rpm causing a big lean spike. I've made some tweaks and it feels loads better but I've not re-timed yet.

That's being said, I'll still always need 3rd and I don't want to mess about with gear ratios etc. It's just too much work. The car may be going DCT over Winter also so any work I did on the gears would be wasted money.

also banging the limiter wont be helping
You're not the first to say this but if I don't keep it on the limiter for a bit there simply isn't enough wheel speed in 3rd gear and the car just bogs in third gear.

I know what it sounds and looks like from the videos but I can assure you, after having the car with this engine in for 5 years, I know how to get the best from its performance.

For those of you that watch the Officially Gassed YouTube channel, you'll already have know what went on last Friday.

I was invited to take part in the first of a new series for Jamie's channel called OG Battles.

Jamie puts similar cars up against each other in a serious of tests; 0-60, quarter mile time trials and then a quarter mile and roll-race.

I won't spoil the results of the video in terms of who wins but here are a few photos -

As you can see in the image below, after just two runs on an un-prepped surface, I managed to achieve an 11.78@122mph.

I'm so happy with that for my first time ever doing a quarter mile run in this car.

In terms of 0-60 times, I achieved a 4.05 in the time-trial, however I was able to spend some time on the runway by myself at the end of the day, and I'd remembered to take my Dragy with me.

I achieved -

So I've finally made it into the 3s. That's a rwd, manual car and I'm changing gear twice to get there! So chuffed with that. Finally did it.

I've made a 'behind the scenes' video of the day, but I can't post it for a few weeks as I don't want to give anything away from other videos shot on the day. I'll post a link up to it once it's ready.

I hope you enjoy the OG video smilebiggrin

Did you have the Dragy running in tandem with the Racelogic system?
In short, no. Vbox were paying for the day so I didn't feel it necessary to do back to back testing against their product.
