Thank GPM, I’ve stuck the cover over it for now to keep the weather out (and obscure the parking permit), so I’ll keep my fingers crossed on both counts!

I had a Corrado 16v as my first car (!)
I bought it with a cracked cylinder block, blowing exhaust gas out of the coolant bottle. I had the block skimmed and a new head fitted and completely rebuilt for £750 +VAT. !!

I parked it outside Jimmy's hospital in Leeds for the 18 months when I worked there. Jimmy's is not in a nice part of town.
It had the locks screwdriver'ed 3 separate times in 18 months and eventually I didn't repair the holes and just left it unlocked. Fortunately they never did the tin-of-tuna job that you've suffered.

Then I got I job in Harrogate; and on the day I drove up there to start work somebody, rammed me from behind at about 20mph, OUTSIDE FLIPPIN' JIMMYs HOSPITAL.

It spent 2 weeks at the bodyshop on the jig and being repainted and I drove it another 50,000 miles before selling it for £1000, it was on 117,000 miles.

- weirdly I have just bought 4 Corrado G60 alloy wheels to go on my up! GTi, because they are one of the only ones to fit over the calipers.

smile - says the man who drives a ute!

I'm in between proper cars. It's awesome though! Identical power to weight as a G60 now.

Ah yes, well, err...

Between proper cars is good, I think I'll use that excuse as well!

As always, completely baffled by this level of blunt idiocy. Really sorry it was attempted on the G60, I hope the repairs and chosen repair centre (your driveway?) come up trumps to get the car back to full health.

Let's hope karma catches up with them, perhaps at 70mph, shortly.

Thanks again all, mostly for making be feel better about today. I think I have found the parts and will wait for the judgement of the insurance company.

Just to add to today’s automotive woes, I borrowed a car from my in-laws for the one thing I had to do today. Drove over a pothole at 5mph, snapped the O/S/F spring and cookie cuttered the front tyre. Had to get recovered to the garage (and they are now without a car).

Hope to get that fixed early this coming week.

I have now had half a bottle of random home brewed wine that I found in a cupboard, and feel better.

This is not turning into a trouble free 2021.

People are wkers.

On the phone to the insurance company now, but I suspect it will be written off as it needs 2 new doors.
Oooft, that's awful sorry to see that :-(

FFS. Whhhhyy do this much damage. Sorry mate that's horrible to see after all these years. I thought the criminals had lost interest in these old motors but clearly not.

Do you think they were trying to steal it or were after something left in the interior/head unit etc?

I do have a spare drivers door you can have. It has a little bit of rust on the inside seam though. Plently of breakers on the Corrado world though - Chris Ferry up north somewhere is a great bloke. Are you on the facebook Corrado Great Britain Group? Plenty will help you out.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/746458145534377/

They're a nice bunch.

Alternatively you could try the Corrado.net forum for a wanted post too. These days you need to be a member to post on the subforums though. The forum is dying sadly with visitors though.

On the plus side at least you door scraper seals look undamaged. A NOS set went for £600 the other day!

Gutted though for you.

EDIT to add - if you do go down the write off route don't let the insurance company take the car. These cars are worth thousands in parts.

Thanks all. Still awaiting the assessment from the insurance company, but they called yesterday to say that actually they /have/ found a repair centre in York that they'd like to use.

The VW Main Dealer.

I have reservations about that. It has been agreed that they will send someone to take a look at it and make a decision, but the car is not going anywhere until its going somewhere to get repaired. This may or may not be the Main Dealer!

_Mja_ thanks very much for the offer of the door (and general helpful advice). Corrado owners are a good bunch! I'm actually collecting 2 doors and the glass tomorrow from Teeside as I found someone breaking a 16v. I'm in the CCGB (but not on Facebook) and AS a long time member of The Forum, would agree with you about its post count. Then again, I'm posting on here, not there, so am partly to blame....

The Corrado will be back on the road, even if I do all of the prep work (door swaps etc.) myself and just take it to a body shop for spaying. Watch this space Spinakerr!

Apparently talking to my friend at the garage, joy riding is back, but the targets are cars of this era and older because they're easier to pinch. Luckily in this case, it would seem that the perps were as inept as they were mindless. I have ordered some additional security though - going back to the 90s with a Stoplock!

In a more positive turn of events, the Volvo is fixed (apart from the brakes which really need doing the next time I can borrow it from my in laws), and we have the best neighbours in the world. They have lent us their Mk4 Golf V5 for the daily errands driving
Makes a good noise!

Funnily enough (although it actually isn't funny), we live rurally about 10 miles out of our local city. Over the last year I've noticed a number of joy-ridden cars dumped in fields smashed up after they've been ragged through a few hedges.

I wouldn't say we lived in a high crime area especially, no tales of break ins for car keys or gangs taking Golf Rs up here but it's enough that I've noticed. All were older cars or vans as it happens.

Ahh good to hear you're getting somewhere and haven't lost the heart with it. Mine has been annoying me recently only becuase I found a rust hole on the jacking point after spending out on a full windows out respray etc and thought I was done for a while. It is currently sitting without an interior as i plan to waxoil it but maybe i should leave it that way if the thieves have them in their sight for joy riding!

You've got great neigbours! I wish I bought a v5 as a run around instead of the pd130 I have. I don't need a diesel although it a punchy little unit. Do like the mk4 as car, controversal i know but it's such a solid rust free motor that feels like it will go on and on.

I can see how finding a rust hole after all that would be immensely frustrating. Stick with it though (just get some large visible security....or as has been suggested on the forum....a dog smile )

I have the doors, and the insurance company have offered cash in lieu of repairs as an alternative to handing it over to the main dealer. I think I will be taking that, and will swap over door locks, window mechanisms etc. myself before sending it to a body shop for a respray.

In the mean time, I thought I’d wash the ‘courtesy’ car. I really do have great neighbours, they are lovely, lovely people.

An interesting drive, it does make me appreciate how good the Corrado’s chassis engineering was. The Golf is a nice and well rounded car, but doesn’t feel as responsive (unsurprising), although it seems well engineered, and I confess I really rather like it!

Oh gosh the attempted break in is a disaster.

If you get the opportunity please do not let the car be written off. The Corrado breakers will have plenty of doors available and you could get lucky in the right colour to.

Then strip everything I mean every bit of rubber an plastic off your old doors and I bet you can make a good chunk back. Door handles, window scrapers, side trim , window regulators ,central locking etc etc.

Yes I bought a good door for £30 from a chap in the facebook group who had bought it earlier for the scraper seal (they are £250+ for a good set). It's a bloody good door too. I can see from the pictures your scraper seals are in great condition so try and keep those!

Be careful with some of the breakers - Corrado Graveyard on the M25 is nice to chat to but no good at actually sending off your parts. I bought a set of rubber mats from him in November via ebay and am still waiting for them after chasing. I was also sending him more business which he hasn't delivered either. Maybe he's alright if you go and physically visit.

I also bought a door from some breaker in Swadlincote, looked good in the picutres but when it arrived it was (very) rusty in the seams. Best to go and pick them up in person.

I just checked in, that's shocking. Nevertheless, the titivation is part of it and the respray may afford you the opportunity to address a few cosmetic issues at the same time.

I was lucky with the doors, there was someone breaking an early 16v (non electric windows) near Thornaby and I was booked in to visit a site for work less than 2 miles away, so all the parts are now in my garage.
The doors have a couple of minor dings, but are solid and rot free for a very reasonable price.

It will take some work to transfer the internals, but that's something I can take on (carefully)!

Good to hear and good you got early doors to suit your car - they are lighter than the later doors.

I guess you'll probably end have both the sides painted? Should look nice and fresh (although it looked nice before hand). Have you had a dig around in your fuel cap area - take the black rubber surround out. Can be rot spot and collects mud, just thinking if it needed love then now is a good time.

That's amazing. I saw the Corrado in thornbury as it's just down the road from me and was going to pick it up for the sake of it.

Then I saw your post and tried to find it again on Facebook and it has gone.

So glad that the doors an hopefully you got some other bits as there was so much good stuff still on that shell
