Sir, I believe you had a 'waft' rather than a 'tootle...'

One must observe the correct nomenclature now that one owns a Jaguar... biggrin

My 3.2S was fine in snow, spent most of the time sliding softly sideways, but never failed to proceed or gave me time to worry. I miss my XJ40.

I like the fact you have 15mins to catch a slide, given the long wheelbasesmile

Although I reckon it'll struggle to get out the street, given her clio 172 did this morning.

I had a gorgeous Kingfisher blue 1992 4.0 sovereign many years back.. cream, with blue piped interior,.. It was definately one of the quietest, comfiest and best mile muncher cars I've ever had..
If I remember it ate wheels bearings and brake components... and in the time I had around (85k - 130k miles) it it needed shocks, most of the bushes replacing, front rack rebuilding, rear diff replacing, and because some tw@t jumped on the bonnet in Covent Garden, the fuel rail replacing.

That is nice isn't it?

My best was about half a mile with the back a foot or two to the side at no more than 10mph past a school at about 8:00am on a week day hehe

There was no way it'd start moving uphill with out a gentle wheelspin & waggle of the steering to dig into some grip & they it stayed that way to keep moving.

The other good game is braking nice & softly on snow, feeling the front wheels lock up & the car carries on forwards as the torque at idle is enough to overcome the rear brakes & keep pushing. I soon learnt to select 'N' as I dropped below 5mph(ish) to avoid this.

Good tip!

Of course a set of Winter tyres would cure all that, but takes the fun out of it a bit smile

New tyres? I paid £500 for my XJ40 & put £110 of fuel in on the way home. New tyres would have doubled the cost!

How would it? You have to buy tyres when they wear out, you're just buying them sooner than needed. Not to mention the benefits of perhaps not crashing and ruining your car.

Saw lots of cars in ditches and hedges recently (including 4x4s), perhaps they thought the same way?

All the cleaning seems to have taken it's toll on the battery!

Went to shuffle some cars about, and the bugger wouldn't start. Luckily the Germans came to the rescue..

Out of the 15 or so cars i've had in my limited years of driving, only 2 properly stick in my mind as the ones that got away. Both of them were an absolute nightmare to own from start to finish, and one of them was my Jag Sovereign. I remember having to fork out £800 for the gold lined idle valve - I only paid £500 for the car 2 weeks before! I loved mine like it was my first born.

It had such presence and even though it was slower than a mini bus full of Nunns, it sounded great.

Looking forward to seeing how you get on with yours mate.
To be fair, you picked the slowest one possible!
I distinctly remember my Dads FIL saying "You know about cars don't you Keith? I'm after an XJ40..."
And my Dad saying "Don't get a 2.9 and don't get one without FSH".
What did he buy? A 2.9 with no SH at all... Lol. You can't tell some people.
Think he payed c£8/9k for it too, so a good few years back!

Because I crashed it on diesel (can't have been ice, it was mid summer).

Besides doubling the cost of getting the car means it'd have cost double, the tyres it came with lasted as long as I owned it anyway.

So this has just thrown up a new fault.

It only starts in Neutral, and it makes a "GRRAunch" noise when you pass through Neutral on the way to either Drive or Reverse.

I'm starting to think it may be down to either a sticking solenoid on the starter, or some issue with the inhibitor switch- anyone any suggestions?

I've also included it in my March Fleet update

Does the box change smoothly and quietly through the gears in drive as it should?

Doesn't sound like the box itself then, though I'm no mechanic. Have you tried Googling it?

Yeah- thats where the thought re the solenoid comes from.

apparently you can get it to tap back in to position- or shake the car to get it to return..

who knows?
