Used pump fitted and normal operation resumed. Total cost £422 including labour,

The old pump (I am not sure if it's worth keeping but I wouldn't mind knowing what failed inside):

Then after collection I swung past Sytner to pick up the HRW but I couldn't fit it inside so the E39 was used. Hopefully it's being fitted next week.

Keep that glass safe!

After an extended trip in the BMW, how does the CL feel in comparison?

As a really comfy armchair enclosed in a sound-proof box smile

I really missed it, I have to say.

I think the last three main items yet to do are sort out the missing catalytic converter, I need a new RH mirror glass but I refuse to pay MB over £300 for one, and the centre vents which house the parking sensor lights has a blown bulb.

Then it will be fairly ship-shape, though I have a hankering to try some steel wheels and hub caps from the saloon for some reason.

Oh, and the OE AMG monoblocks need tyres but they can wait until summer.

This is my father in laws old car (he's now very sadly deceased)
He bought it new and loved this car.
I remember it being so so comfortable and built like a tank, I loved being a passenger in it.
It's great to see it's still on the road.

How much quieter is it than the E39? I'd be interested to know how quiet these are, I have found that the E38 7 was more refined and quiet than the E39 but I think leaps in refinement for modern executive cars have generally been more steps since that era of car, but the leap from an E34 to E39 was massive. For example, the E65 was a bit quieter than the E38, but I don't think it was massively so.

Hello bigtomski. Good to hear of a PH connection. The chap from who I bought it is also now sadly deceased but I can't recall if he was the second or third owner. I can't find the log book at the moment.

What did your FIL do out of interest (if you can say)? It was quite a few quid in 1998.

It's chalk and cheese Ross. Not really a fair comparison though, as they were never competing against each other.

My FIL was a real character and he's missed greatly.
He had a really successful clothing retail and wholesale business and he bought this car with a briefcase of cash.
My wife went on several European road trips in the car with her dad and i'm told it reached the limiter effortlessly on the autobahn and it still felt like you were doing only 50mph.
Back in the day, the car had such presence and whenever there was a family gathering or dinner he 100% always got a parking space outside whichever restaurant we would be eating at.
It was incredible, I think quite often he would get a waiter to park it for him!
Quite often, If a space was a bit tight he would use the weight of the Merc and gently nudge his way in to a space.

He lived centrally in Paddington and quite often whenever the other half and I would be driving through central London at night returning home from somewhere
we would see his car parked up outside a really fancy restaurant or nightclub.
Again, always right outside the front as my FIL would get the doormen or waiters to park the car for him wherever he was. I think he knew all the doormen in central London.
We would be returning home exhausted from wherever we had been and he would be just going out!

He was such a great man, I always compared him to Tony Soprano, not that he was a gangster, but he had a huge presence and people loved and respected him.
He later ran a BMW X5 alongside this car as he went to Glastonbury a lot and he once got the Merc stuck in the mud and had to be towed out.
Enjoy the car, when he had it he looked after it fastidiously.

Nice postscript to tobinen's car there. Good of you to outline that.

As tobinen is himself something of a man about town, it's like a circle. Or something. wink

I love the anecdote, what a chap.

However, there's also a worrying trend to the status of previous owners of this vehicle... don't sell it in a hurry, Tobinen!

I have a blue rear view mirror glass. Suspect failure of automatic dimming but at least I can still see what's behind.

Have to say, the auto dimming rear view mirror has to be one of the better inventions for cars in the last thirty years or so. Have had one in almost all my cars in the last ten years or so, and just got back from Germany where the Opel Grandland X rental we got didn't have one. Though you can tilt the mirror manually (my old MK2 Golf didn't even have that!) it leaves almost nonexistent visibility, whereas the auto dimmer dims it based on light conditions. The one in my Mondeo has only been useless once, some tt in a newish 3-series and LED headlamps but left on full beam as he pulled onto the road and followed me for a couple of miles. I had to fold in the exterior mirrors and physically move the rear view they were that bright. Would be lost without one normally otherwise.

I wonder is that Mercedes one the same as other models like BMW? I know the E38/E36/E46/E39 ones all fit physically so it could be similar here

I don't know where you are, but Old School Windscreens in Surrey have a strong reputation in the fitting department.
Glassman has gone quiet so gave these chaps a call, spoke to a nice lady and have provisionally booked for 4 Jan. I have no idea yet if I can fit the glass in the car for the trip; it certainly won't go in the boot.

The rear view mirror has returned to near-normality but I really must replace the RH door mirror glass. Two pattern parts options are available on the bay of dreams from Germany and Latvia but I am not sure whether to take a punt.

I'm pleased that my recommendation came to be of use. Where are you based? Perhaps my 4999cc estate car can also be of use in giving your windscreen a ride to OSW.

In Newbury. I'll have a trial load tomorrow with the passenger seat down. If it doesn't fit then I'm stumped unless I take the E39 then come back for the CL. It would be a major pain as it's 75 mins or so each way.

OSW say they don't come out as far as Newbury unfortunately.

WIth a possible jolly out tomorrow for some pub car park action, I wished the Romanians a happy new year and parted with a tenner for a quick once over. It certainly looks ok from a couple of meters IMO.

I noticed that the side repeater is growing green

The LH indicator also has signs of water ingress (it's been as this for a while but worsened of late)

In other news the boot lid carpet is damp, which I noticed the other day. Unsure from where that is coming, but I think the talcum power test on the weatherseal would be a good start.
