Reversing sensors must have been a very rare option in 1998 - or were they added later?

Pretty sure they were standard fit for the later facelifts as they did away with the rising 'poles' in the rear quarters. The distance lights are built into the front air vents and the rear ones are in the headlining at the back so one can see them in the rear view mirror.

Looking good!

Forgive me - what's the talc trick?

Talc the boot seal, shut the boot, hose down with water, let it dry off (well), open boot and check for run marks in the talc where the seal has failed.

Hmm. I wonder if that'd work for my 124 estate boot seal. Thanks.

Nice to meet you earlier, tobinen, and have a drive. Your car feels similar but different to my two - in a way, a bit like a cross between the 95 W124 for Mercedesness and the 00 LS400 for a touch more modern, and a muted big engine.

Car looks lovely.

Unfortunately OSW's classic car man is off sick so now re-booked for 11th. Anyway, trial load. It should be OK, I just need to support the middle bit with some cushions to ensure it doesn't flex too much

A fruitless morning sadly. I had no GPS for the trip over to OSW and I took the wrong exit off the M3. Then I became lost more than once, after enough frustration I called them to say I would be late and I am lost. With some given directions from the chap, I eventually found them an hour late.

They checked the glass and it was OK to proceed. I popped next door where there is a proper café and ordered the works.

I'd finished the breakfast and was reading the paper when the fitter came round and apologised gracefully confessing that he'd clipped the FM radio wire and it had snapped. Credit where credit is due, if he hadn't have owned up I'd have been none the wiser.

They are ordering another glass and will call when it's in, which will be about 3 weeks if it's the same as it was for me.

In other news I am pretty sure the damp boot lid carpet is due to the boot not closing flush on the weatherseal as the weatherseal is only damp on the lower edge. I will book into the garage for an adjustment.

The pub/cafe's a good one and I'm pleased to hear that they offered accountability.

Some positive news. OSW called today to tell me the new HRW has been delivered and all good. I am booked in for Saturday 25 Jan and a free breakfast has been offered at the next door café (jointly owned by the lady at OSW and her sister). I am suitably impressed.

Even though it's been relatively dry lately the boot lid carpet is still soaking (dripping water once opened), so that's a puzzle. I thought it was the weatherseal but now I am uncertain.

Booked in to the garage next Wednesday for them to poke about.

You can adjust the boot catch on these very easily. The catch receiver is a separate part that slides up and down, located with two screws. Mine was too low and boot wouldn't shut...I wonder if yours is a touch high? Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know

Sounds plausible and the garage has adjusted it before, so if it is that it won't be expensive. I may take a look myself but I've steered clear of any tinkering with the locking/doors

This weekend I was in Bury St. Edmunds for a mate's 50th. I stayed at The Angel Hotel which was very pleasant. It's a bit dearer than I would normally choose, but it wasn't a lot more than the Premier Inn so I treated myself.

I was expecting a single room but rather fortunately I had a large double, with a view of the Abbey Gate

After breakfast I had a wander around the gardens prior to setting off for home.

This was a memorial to holocaust victims

A lovely fresh sunny winter's day, it took me 2½ hours to drive home with no hold-ups along the way for a change. The CL is running as sweet as a nut, damp boot lid carpet notwithstanding.

I do love a drive to Suffolk and enjoy passing Duxford, too. Bury is a lovely market town.

When the car perfectly matches the place ... Fantastic.

The garage has called. The water ingress cannot be replicated but he has a theory that when I'd left it outside during my Spain tour, as the retractable boot handle could not retract, water and thereby condensation accrued.

He's taken up all the boot and quarter carpets and it is pretty dry there. He's dried out the boot lid and hopefully that is that. £78 please sir

OSW have also called this morning and we're all good for Saturday's HRW fitting, with possibly a complimentary breakfast thrown in.

This cropped up which I missed from Classic and Sportscar: https://www.classicandsportscar.com/features/guilt...

"Reaction to the car was so poor that Greenpeace actually mounted a protest against it on the roof of the Sindelfingen manufacturing plant in 1995."

Im being offered one of these as a part exchange against my Bentley, but a CL600. I have to admit, I am sorely tempted as they have really stated growing on me, and I do love an old Merc. (used to have a 190E 2.5-16)

What sort of things are common with these that need looking out for (apart from bodywork and electrics)?

I'd love a 600 I think. I'd consider moving this on for a 600.

In answer to your question (you've mentioned the major ones already- check all the electric stuff)

If it has a sunroof check the drains - they rust away.
Check the soft close works on all doors.
Check the aircon blows to all vents. I think they're vacuum-operated flaps on the heater box. Pricey fix
Check HRW works. They usually delaminate and it's also the FM radio aerial.
Check inner front suspension bushes.

Rust you've mentioned, check underneath. Mine is Ok which is pretty good for a 21 year old car.

Thanks for that, it all sounds relatively straight forward then. My O/H just wants us to give up the classics (my Bentley is a 1980 T2) as we just don't have the time anymore with a young family, nor really the space to keep a classic (Bentley sits on the drive), but I am sorely tempted to have a big, wafty Mercedes, and so it does appeal.

It is white mind you.......hehe
