What's the best alternative to replace it with? I'm sending the unit off to be looked at and (hopefully) repaired so let's hope that cures it!

"Best" I guess depends on a lot of things, not least what you want it for and what your budget is. If you want a weapons-grade race-quality car and money's no object then MoTeC would be hard to beat. If you want a more mundane daily driver then another Apexi (and hope you get a good one) is the cheapest, easiest solution. Haltech have quite a good rep? I put a Link on mine because it has a lot of good features and is a lot faster and "brighter" than an Apexi but is still purpose-built for an FD.

Essentially I'm looking for reliability. The engine is street-ported and I intend to run a decat once the engine is ready to be mapped, but other than that this car is largely for enjoying at sensible(ish) speeds in the country. How much is the Link?

Love it. What's with the panel gap though? The stopgap car is great, always wanted one of those with the Recaros.

sorry, had to go to work. IIRC my Link was about £800 but that was a good few years back, it might have changed. I know it's a bit steeper than the Apexi but I figured it was worth it. I lost a couple of engines in quite quick succession and though the underlying cause was electrical, the final nail was the Apexi simply not being smart enough to realise what was going on and adjust accordingly... basically it let the engines blow without adjusting the fuelling to save them. The Link reacts so much faster and is so much more intelligent. If nothing else, the car drives much smoother and more predictably on the same setup. I had a potential disaster a while back when the vacc line blew off the MAP sensor on high boost, and I still maintain that on the Apexi that'd have been another engine. The Link managed to overfuel, even on about 3 bar eek to the point that it didn't detonate and the only ill effect was the exhaust being so full of fuel it set fire to the rear bumper hehe

If you want to look into it further, I believe Jason at Super 7 Autos still sells (and maps them, in-house dyno). I'm sure he'd be happy to talk you through it better than I ever could if you give him a bell

Had an ignis sport for a while - good fun but very unrefined. Engine feels like it wants to be thrashed!

Well, after being sat for almost three years she's finally cranked into life again!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkJq2GNykgg

How she's sat now (low-quality pic):

I was hoping she'd be done today but I'm going to assume that will slip as the spoiler still needs to go on and the seat in judging by this pic. A step closer though! biggrin

Great thread and great (if flawed) car. Keep the faith, there need to be more of these kept alive!

Awesome. This has really motivated me to get that car I always wanted.

Always confuses me these RX7s when I see the reg plate. A J reg? Oh yeah it's from the 90s!

Had an fc TII then an fd for 10 years, loved em both, engine by WGT, bounced off the limiter on many track days, but then the itch was cured. That lasted 6 weeks till rxmotors last 20b engine was purchased. I'm 2 years in now, but this summer, who knows😊

The RX7 is looking really good !

I was wondering if you still had the R-Magic Type-II spoiler, as I would be interested in buying it.

Slow progress again, but she failed the MOT yesterday on some fairly minor things. Hopefully she'll pass the retest today! On the plus side, bar a good wash, the exterior is finished.
