One thing I've loved on Porsche's are black wheels with a silver lip. In the summer, I may do this to mine.

I'm also painting the inner barrels of the alloys silver too so you get a clean inner wheel. Like these:



Notice the inner barrels being silver, as well as the silver rim? Black inner barrels make the wheels look too dark. But these are gorgeous.

Did a quick Photoshop of my wheel (didn't do the inner barrel silver yet):



Thoughts? I'm worried that the alloys don't suite the colour theme, and that if I were to do this, I'd have to change wheels.

Do you think they work?

Silver lip suits those wheels brilliantly IMO, I say go for it!

I typical PH style, I'm going with the opposing view.
For the wheel you have, black with or without the lip doesn't work for me (see the black wheel thread)
Gun metal maybe...
Black alloys rarely work at all...fuchs work, the Cayman R type just about, but most look like aftermarket 'try-hard' efforts.
Silver all the way for me.
I'm a great admirer of your car, and the work you've done to improve it (I'm always looking at autotrader at 2004 S's and considering trading in my S2000 because of it!) and I'd it goes without saying that if you like it, you go with it, but for me, that alloy wheel design is not a favourite, and black as a wheel colour doesn't work....

Probably ruins the ride, but these are my fave 986 wheels (RUF?)


If it were me I'd be having some matching Porsche script down the side in mathing silver/gunmetal too...

I would keep the current wheels, the stripe looks good, not sure about the silver barrel.

Had the bypass pipes put in by Charlie today dude. Went for 1", oh wow it sounds incredible. We should have a rev battle at some point

Okay so I've decided that black with the silver lip doesn't work on this style of wheel, so that's out of the question. However, a fully black wheel could work. If I was to stay anthracite, I'd re-spray them a better anthracite colour as mine just look grey.

So I'm down to these three choices - all would be metallic, with a silver inner barrel.

Newer anthracite with silver barrel:

Gold with silver barrel:



Surprisingly, gold looks good with the black paint.

I'm a big fan of gold wheels, but I think the shade you chose is a bit too dark. I'd play around with each choice and make sure the one you're set on is neither too light or dark.

The silver barrel is a good idea too, it helps keep the wheel from looking too small.

The inner barrel idea is a good one...will take some comittment to keep it clean...which you seem to have.

Black and gold is a classic. Getting the right tone will be critical, and for me it'd need to tie in with some other details...like Porsche script down the side...badging, interior fittings...stripes, dunno...something though....or that the wheels dominate and hold their own a bit more...and I'm not sure that style/size of wheel does that..

The Anthracite upgrade might be a great compromise..

Aren't rat bikes predominantly 'aged', not murdered?
Either way this a very well cared for 986, glossy and better than when it left the factory... all black fails imo. From what I can see the OP is after some class and quality. Following the heard of Corsas, Golfs and Focuseses and mundane stuff that fancy the all black look is a mistake...

Gold could work but needs to be the right shade. Check out the 996 for sale by rpm technik which is black with alloys that have a slight gold hint, i think it looks the dogs bks

Because the car is running smaller wheels, and I'm sure all the better for it, darker colours don't really work as they visibly shrink the wheel in my opinion.

Great point.
Smaller wheels - better ride and handling and goes against the trend for big rims.
The rest of the car is glossy and beautifully detailed and upgraded
So don't ruin it with trendy black wheels that don't work so well on smaller diameters...

Thanks for the suggestions I think I may just keep it safe to be honest, may just keep the anthracite but refurbish completely in a better, darker and more metallic anthracite as a best of both worlds, while keeping the inner barrel.

In other news! I've replaced my rear control arms today. £120 for the two, did it in 2 hours, and my word the car is silent now. Not a single bit of knocking, so I'm very happy.
