It is. I used to wonder when I was washing my old XJC whether that was possibly one of the longest single lengths of metal on any car. laugh
Would be interesting to know what is the longest single panel on any car. Wouldn't surprise me if it was up there!

`Up there` most definitely but i`d wager the winner would be American.

Something like the Cadillac that fat detective drove in those 70`s drama shows. Cannon was it?

Probably... maybe if we restricted it to British car. Im sure Bentley and RR have had some long panels and certainly more stylish that a fat Caddy

James May is selling his Corniche that appeared in Top Gear. Purchased it for 25k and has done pretty much nothing to it and they reckon it will sell for around 38-40k at the next Bonhams auction.

I'd think there's probably some pretty damn long estate roof panels, too.

Not as stylish as an XJC rear wing though Mr 2CV..... I should change my criteria haha

Anyways.... back to my question above about chrome.... anyone any ideas?

The chrome ideally needs to be chemically removed or shot blast at least to provide a good key for the paint. I think the metal is brass under the chrome as is doesn't rust through the chrome. i would guess etch prime first before undercoat and colour coat finish. I'm sure your paint guy knows what paint sticks to brass best smile

To paint over chrome (as long as it's solid) you need to do the following:

Sand with something like 180 grit and don't be shy. It may seem harsh, but the idea is to key the surface, get it looking flat and cross hatched with sanding marks, this is what gives the key. Then clean with thinner obviously and etch prime. Then use a urethane primer and refinish with fine paper (800 or 1200). Then a coat of sealer and paint with normal 2 pack automotive paint/lacquer process.

It will last as long as the bodywork with no chipping or peeling etc.

Do you think it would achieve the desired effect of making the roof look lower?

I believe the Bentley Brooklands has the largest single panel.

It definitely won't highlight the opening. Personally I think you need a bit of chrome otherwise it could look like a more modern car but with chrome bumpers. Are you keeping the chrome trim along the top of the door and quarter where the window wipe rubber is? That will give a good style line against the black paint. Do you think?

I was thinking of keeping all the chrome from the bottom of the side windows down so I was talking about getting rid of the chrome around the windscreens and the changing the side trim that goes around the rood gutters in body colour

80's Aston Martin Lagonda front wing is mental.

Yes, I think that works. Can the window trim be finished in a satin black to blend in with the rubber? Body colour on the roof gutter trim and as you said keep the thin chrome across the door and rear quarter. Sounds good smile
