I suspect it's too late now but if you can get RTA to generate the export certificate showing the exact, correct date then that would remove any issue... I went back to them once my car was in the UK and I knew there was a problem and they were unable to retrospectively do a new cert for me as "once you've exported the car it's removed from our system"

The only proof of age that DVLA will accept is:
1) Export cert as above
2) Letter from the manufacturer confirming date of build

I was very very lucky to get mine changed post-registration, the import agent had never known anyone be successful at this before.
I called Mercedes UK and there's a web portal to request the very document I need, for 36 quid. homologation@daimler.com will work too.

That should solve it.

Minor update. Mercedes UK - homologation dept. - were brilliant.

within 24hr I received a signed/stamped letter stating original build date and specific DVLA code for registration.

That should solve it. Now the long wait...

So now the cars in the UK are you going to change the wood or embrace it?

You mentioned previously about the hassle of going back to wood for resale due to the locals interest in the wood...

Now that's a good point.

The steering wheel is the ugliest piece, and the leather is quite worn on one side. I reckon I could just swap the wheel for a nicer one from the era and have the "wood" bits sprayed over in a better colour.

It's only 4 pieces in the end (I won't buy them aftermarket as they are $xxxx)

Biggest dilemma for me would be the maccy's drivethrough
Reverse in for added style points.

You could always have the steering wheel re-upholstered by somewhere like http://royalsteeringwheels.com/mercedes-benz/

Great old tanks these, good on you for importing it!

I think it would improve the interior a lot for sure!

I would be pretty confident you could switch out the steering wheel for one from a w209/r230 etc with no issues?

I think you're right. Some bits to do when the car is on the road here.

to begin with I bought some blanking plates for the bull bar delete. I think it's legal in the UK but it looks better without it.

I should have done that in Dubai but got lazy.

Also, the MPH instrument cluster. Still trying to figure out if it's a DIY job to swap it. sure it is, but maybe not for a low-patience threshold Italian like me.

That's a fantastic motor OP. And fair play to you bringing something with that much of a drinking problem back to the UK!

On another note, I really like the bull bar... getmecoat

Me too, in fact I'd go so far as to say I'm really not keen on them without, they just don't look right to me.
I say keep it!

hmm, we'll see.

Not sure the bull bar is legal (the UK car comes without it).

Pretty sure bull bars are illegal, had a customer here at Nissan a while ago asking and I'm sure it was something along the lines of being illegal so we don't stock them.

Was for a Navara.

It's illegal for non-compliant bullbars to be sold. It's not illegal for them to be fitted.

What's going to force the removal of this one, though, is that the G is going to need to be IVAd before being registered. It's <10yo, it's not going to have an EU certificate of compliance. Mr IVA is not going to like the bull bar one tiny bit.

'course, if it doesn't get UK registered until after it hits 10yo next year, then it only has to deal with Mr MOT... Then the kph-only speedo ceases to be an issue, too...

Ah! I looked back and saw "2008 model" at the start...

Job jobbed, then. The only thing it'll almost certainly need doing is an OS rear foglight, if it doesn't already have a pair.

Yes, 2008 model year. The foglight is part of the mods that ShipMyCar will do, @2 minute job

How will they do the foglight? Will this be OE-esque in the rear bumper or a thing hanging under?

I would be tempted to leave the metric speedo (my car has one - not an issue to live with) and be quite tempted to leave the wood (or at least not paint over it) as whilst some may see it as "aesthetically challenging," I'm guessing it's quite well done.

I stress that I'm aware it's neither my car nor my money and thus these are merely my opinions and nothing more!

Absolutely love it.

Don't change the interior.
Don't remove the bar. It's the perfect tool to move sh*t out of the way.

Bring it over here and sell it to me when you realise filling it up costs 7 times more. biggrin
