Fire bottle serviced and back in biggrin :

I'll be at the PH 25th at Bicester next weekend so feel free to have a look, it'll be in the car park somewhere.

I think you mentioned that you're using Cayenne discs on the front (with the 6-pot calipers)? I had a look and noticed that they are 350mm x 35mm on the FVD website. 996.2/997.1 GT3 front discs appear to be 350 x 34.

Cayenne disc
https://www.fvd.net/de-en/95535140151EQ/brake-disc...

GT3 disc
https://www.fvd.net/de-en/99735140990EQ/brake-disc...

Are they relatively easily interchangeable? I've no idea how much of an issue a 1mm width difference makes. I think there's a PHer who put Cayenne discs on the front of his 996.2 GT3, I think.

The reason I ask is that I'm interested in discs for my car that are not cross drilled, both because they're prone to cracking and they fill with brake dust, which affects their performance on track days.

thanks thumbup

Apologies for the slow reply!

On my car I can run either 350mm 997 discs or 350mm Cayenne discs - there is plenty of room in the caliper for the extra 0.5mm a side.... however (and it's a big however) mine is on Cayenne calipers too.

When it comes to running them on a 996 GT3 caliper I too have seen others do it and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.... but I can't confirm that 100% as I've never done it with a GT3 6 pot. The only issue I can think is that the disc may foul the pins the pad sit on in the lower section of the caliper but these can be knocked out a little to make room if required without much effort!

If you want some measurements I'm sure I still have a Cayenne disc in CAD.

I'm not in any rush as unless I get another crack to the outside edge of the disc (it happened once after 2 track days grumpy ), mine have lots of life left.

Do you have to replace if there is a crack or is it just a good idea - rather than absolutely necessary?

It's a MOT failure point if a crack goes from a hole to the outer edge of the disc.

Cracks around the holes are usually fine and are common if subject to really hard braking like on track days; but maybe an advisory depending on the tester. A full crack from one inner hole to another inner hole might fail too, I'm not sure.

Great day at Bicester for PH's 25th Anniversary, so many great conversations about the car and I am genuinely blown away by how many people know it and give it the thumbs up.

It was a real pleasure to talk to you all! biggrin

I wandered in there and a gent was having a very close inspection of the PPBB Beast.

In your abscence I gave him as much info as I could remember but waited until the end of the conversation to tell him it wasn't mine... he obviously thought I was a "car stalker" at that point, it not being normal to know so much about someone else's car.biggrin

He definitely did not believe the mileage I told him it had done, "that's 10 full Ferrari lives".

Happy 996'ing. Time to get a few stone chips and some rear end gravel rash on her now, it's looking a bit "minty".beer

Great to be able to chat in person, loved the car and all the engineering that's gone into it.
All the little details to see first hand was excellent.

Thank you for doing show and tell in my absence biggrin

I mentioned to someone that I was a bit sad it's lost all it's hard earned patina but I'm sure I can put that back on in due course laugh and of course I'll keep the thread updated as I do!

That was me, perhaps jealous at the overabundance of patina my car has hehe. A pleasure to chat and see the car up close, keep in touch sir.

As mentioned previously I wanted to replace the AIM display / logger (G Dash / Evo 5) that had been in the car for sometime. Whilst it's a great bit of kit it was way OTT for the use case of the car and looked a little too motorsport plonked in front of the standard clocks for the cars new GT Car aspirations.

I've been researching who does a small CANBus capable display for a while and hadn't found much that could go in relatively unobstrusively but spotted that Germany based CANChecked had updated their 52mm gauge display to have a few extra capabilities that made it fit the bill, so I got one ordered up!

Key requirements were abiliy to brand it with a splash screen, have sufficent control on the layout so it matched the colour and design influence of the 996 interior, had configurable CAN (as surprisingly no one has done a proper decode of the Mk1 996 CANbus which only exists proerly in the C4 laugh ) and supported a basic shift light.

First job was to decode the CAN, I'd done this previously but wanted more channels that I'd had on the AIM (specifically all four wheel speeds and both PPS):

Using an OTS Shiftec CAN Analyser to work out the scaling required to get SIC units out of the raw CANbus data. Some things like RPM are simple 1:1 scalings and some things like coolant temp are proper OEM levels of dicking around to get two decimal places from three numbers.

With that done I made a splash screen in GIMP that matched the wallpaper on the head unit:

All the data comes across a treat and the ability to change text colour etc. on the display layout means it doesn't stand out too much against the stanard orange on black LCDs:

The display layout is pretty configurable with bar charts etc.

As well as having math channels etc. to support selected gear calculation etc. It's got a bit of logging on it (albeit proper bare bones!) and is really very impressive for the cost of it. Configuration is via a web browser and Wifi connection which is something I'm very not keen on but it works well enough for the short and basic config required for something like this, plus it's pretty impressive having Wifi, a web server, a DHCP client etc. built into a 52mm gauge biggrin

Very pleased it works as planned as it was the least obvious option I could find without making something from scratch! Plan is to install it in an Autometer column pod:

Which is currently on its way from the States. I'll post an updated when it's all in and I've had chance to use it in anger!
How do you find all of this wonderful stuff?! Your threads cost me a fortune. Can Checked on order now. :-)

Just like the Cayenne thread... JXB Propshaft bearing.....ordered from the States... I could never get a response from Greg at PRG Products though... I guess the money I saved there has just bought this gauge....rolleyes

So I should really provide an update on the 996 as it's been very Boxster focused on PH at the moment. The thing is there isn't much to update and without wanting to jinx it the 996 just works..... it's done a few meets and shows along with the odd mundane trip and I think it's enjoying a more relaxed life that it's ever had before biggrin

At a recent POC meet.

I do have a few plans for adventuring in it next year as lets face it, it's rude not to, but I think it's safe to say the running in period is now complete.

There's a few things on the winter list but as winter hasn't really got going it's still in pretty regular use and they are all super minor bits like a further fettle with the fuel filler cap that has now decided it doesn't want to hold open on the spring and a replacement front splitter...... the kind of stuff that is easy to ignore and just keep driving laugh

So apologies for the lack of updates the past few months, I've just been doing miles and enjoying it smile Something I hope the various 996 owners on this thread have been doing too!

I'd dragged all the carbon bits out of storage before Xmas so as I couldn't find anything else to delay the inevitable I unwrapped them all and wiped them down:

These are very much rally car parts designed to be stronger and lighter than the originals but not with the ultimate level of weight saving in mind..... although the combination of wings and bonnet are many kilos lighter than the originals! They're produced from splash moulds of the original parts so some cutting out required but they're as accurate as anything off that sort of tooling could possibly be, to the point I'm quite impressed despite my function over form approach.

First job was to fit the bonnet and gap check against the original front wings. I made a template off the original bonnet to set the gap, in the end it was a super easy fit:

The bonnet is produced from two pieces bonded together to replicate the original upper and lower surfaces. As such it goes on with all the original hardware including the bonnet catch. It was a key thing for me that this didn't look carbon from outside and that the bonnet still secured off the original catch etc. (although I will run a limit strap on it just in case) as bonnet pins are for racing cars! Very pleased with the initial fit, the sizing is pretty spot on (not a given with composite!) and the panel gap against the original wings was good enough in terms of consistency of gap without having to mess about too much - if it still is on the composite ones we'll find out in due course laugh

This thread is one of the best on PH imo.

Can I ask where you got the CF bonnet and wings from? I’d really like to replace mine. Well the bonnet for sure, by the sounds of it the wings could be a step to far for my skill level. smile

The CF bonnet on my CSR is only single skin so its super lightweight bit a bit wibbly wobbly. Also the single bonnet stay support thing is far too strong for it so the bonnet will really fly open if you don't keep hold of it all the way up.
