Stumbled accross this from another link on here and have been reading it all on and off for the last few weeks. Amazing thread, keep up the good work.

Interesting to see the r32 topic mentioned, I too remember at the time, must be 15? Years ago it was well documented on all the forums of the time, xroc/rsoc/pistonheads of the diamond carrying 2 year old r32 golf with six figure mileage. Dont seem that extreme any more, most mk4 golfs have 200k on the clock now!!!

Great read!

Racked up another couple of hundred miles in it today funnily enough smile Lockdown and various other things got in the way over the last year so very little in the way of proper updates bar maintenance (new brake lines all round as at 22 years it felt like time, damper rebuild, new cats as the old ones were lifed out, water pump and a few other bits). I'm pondering converting it to a more GT setup at the moment with a new dash or better integrated additional info display, more modern seats (Cayman or 997) and a few other bits.... so I'll keep you all informed on plans.

Hybrid has fallen a little by the wayside as developing high performance alternative fuel powertrains has become more of a day job these days than a job for the daily.

poppopbangbang - just wondering, a couple of years back (pre Covid) you made a load of Ti fasteners for 911 exhausts - and if I remember right also had a Stomski jig you'd rent out. Any chance you still rent the jig? (the mezger version) or know anyone who does ?

I appear to be suffering from rusty nut syndrome smile and am expecting some to break when I try and replace them

Thanks

I know PPBB outside of PH, he doesn't make the Ti studs anymore and doesn't rent out the jig because it got too much hassle chasing it around the place.

PM me some contact details, I found a guy on the porsche forums, in nottingham that did rent me out the jig, i'll send him your details and ask him to get in touch

Short of these Ti studs what's the next option here?

I got some Ti studs from another supplier. Google it hard enough and you’ll find it.

I just used A4 stainless bolts. Various people on 911uk rent out the jig, its not a bad job just takes a while. Get some nice sharp drill bits!

Not for the 996, but I used a stomski jig for my 3.2 Carrera and it worked a treat.

On 911uk there has been lots of discussion about the suitability of titanium into ally and galvanic action. Some people have used screwfix stainless bolts to good effect, all being removed easily after several years.

IANAM (I am not a metallurgist)! Also on the fence as to what to use, having a set of PPBB’s TI studs in stock!?

I worked on M777 field gun project. The gun is predominately titanium with 7000series aluminium allow parts attached. Between each Ti to Al joint we used C1000 https://www.ppgaerospace.com/Products/Sealants/Spe... in order to prevent corrosion.

Not sure the temp range is applicable / appropriate for an exhaust manifold. While the coolant temp runs around 80 C not sure what the actual temp of the metal block is?

I remember reading this thread years ago - because of it, I was 100% sure that I wanted a 911 996! 2 weeks ago I achieved that dream and goal and bought a 911 996 C2 with 97.5K miles on it. The only issue I have had is with the gear linkage cable, but other than that, its been great so far! I hope to emulate the mileage on this thread!

I noticed that there was a gopro video on page 1 of this thread but its not available anymore. Would you be able to upload this again or any video of the car running maybe?

Thanks, and thanks for the inspiration!

Stainless nut on stainless bolt may suffer from spalling. Sounds odd but I've had good results from mild steel nut on stainless bolt (or vice versa). If the nut rusts then it won't seize on to the bolt in the same way and will remain simple to remove.

Highly amused watching Harrys Garage earlier to see a "Polizei" liveried 996 in the auction!

A livery I ran back in 2017 (if memory serves) on a European road rally, although the French police made us remove the flashing lights laugh

Reminds me how much the pandemic put a stop to arsing about in cars across Europe! Here's to things getting back to it!
