No more company cars - XC60 D5
Discussion
After a long time spent in dull 1.6tdi boxes and an auris hybrid i finally got a promotion and payrise, but they took my company car and fuel card away so I had to go shopping.
Of course it was kid in a sweet, shop time so I wanted to look at everything.
As I have a Harley, and the better half has a Renault wind, I was covered for wind in my face motoring in summer. Needed 4 seats and parking sensors incase she needed to drive it.
I test drove...
Alfa Brera - all too tired, boot and rear seats useless
Alfa 159 estate - As above but better seats and boot
Alfa Giulietta - nice but didn't feel different to my company hacks
BMW 3 series - loads around but a bit obvious
Mercedes C180 - good deals to be had but again a bit obvious
BMW X3 - too much like an off roader
So as you've read the title i plumped for an XC60
2009 with 65k miles, SE Premium Lux spec with optional stereo upgrade, winter pack and towbar.
1 week in, I'm averaging 37mpg in comfort and loving it!

My dad had a relatively base spec D5 manual AWD for three years, I loved driving it, great engine and handling was entertaining (one trip to work in the frost sticks in my mind!!) and he misses it now he has a 3 series GT
Not a single issue with it in those three years, hope yours is as reliable!

Looking seriously at one of these to replace my BMW 120D Sport X drive at the end of the year. Borrowed one while my wife's XC90 was in for a service and did about 120 miles in it. Supremely comfortable, well built and the white R-Design Lux D5 manual really cut a presence in the car park. Only fly in the ointment is new one just around the corner.

Mind you if it goes upmarket like the XC90 I might look at the new Skoda Kodiak instead

It was on auto trader so maybe.
Fingers crossed no issues to come but with a years Volvo parts and labour warranty included I feel quite good. Funny thing is know the previous owner through work, only found out when she collared me to ask why I was driving her car lol. She had it 3 years and traded in for a new v40 as she moved and needed a cheaper commute.

I wanted to like these - they're on are company car list - but the entertainment / navigation is shocking and the auto kills emissions.
The light coloured 'marine ply' wood looks amazing and the seats are comfy, but the tech. is horrendously dated.
The XC90 was even worse! How did they survive? And the Freelander/ RRS / disco interior looks shocking so I would rather have this imoThe light coloured 'marine ply' wood looks amazing and the seats are comfy, but the tech. is horrendously dated.
another dullish update!
over a year with the car and fuel economy according to computer has between 38-39.6 barely moves.
Warranty and breakdown has proved useful
complete shocker, my dad bought a V50 in the same colour!
Currently looking forward to the XC40....tempting

- steering lock failed on so need recovering, Wakefield Volvo but service wasn't great
- oil level exceeded maximum - failed DPF regens due to my shortish commute and economical drive. Breakdown guys said its not uncommon on short commute cars but they never see D5's in for a new DPF like they do the BMW/VAG lot. After poor service at Wakefield had it taken to Doncaster Volvo and usual customer service levels resumed.

Interesting to read this, the XC60 was near the top of my list last year when I was shopping with much the same requirements as you.
In the end I plumped for an X1 Auto as the economy was the driving factor and the X1 promised lower fuel bills than an XC60 - your figures seem to indicate that there's nothing in it.
On my 40 mile (mostly 80mph motorway) commute, over the last year and 26k miles I've averaged 38.7mpg
Now wish I'd bought the Volvo as I much prefer the styling!
