Put a cometic gasket. Best is a 1.6 mm on a 3 for more boost. They raised the compression on the 3.

I had an evo1,went a bit mad on it !! All forged up,big turbo'd. had it for 10 years. Great car.

Its still about im sure.

Cometic is the plan I picked up a full blue print engine gasket set just for various smaller gaskets. 3mm lifters ordered also. What turbo were you running

Some custom thing I imported from the US. Dual Ball bearing. It had an enlarged mitsi exhaust housing with a gt30 compressor in a to4 housing. It surged like hell and I went for a 4" owen developments inlet housing in the end. It worked then.
If I knew then what I do now, id just ditch the mitsi housing and use a to4 style turbo flange, but I was using a nice external gate kit. I tried everything but it only worked with the external.

The evo3 16g turbo is just rubbish with the internal wastegate if you want very much more boost than std. All the forums say port the wastegate, but trust me its no help. Get a external wastegate.

Plans are to get it back together. I have a full set of metal gaskets for it. The head should be ready any day now. 3mm lash adjusters on the way. Few cosmetic bits and a turbo rebuild. I'm trying to get an even balance of originality with a few tasteful mods. A good reliable turn key weekend toy before I start going for more power. Hoping to pick up an evo 7 intercooler for it as they are taller and thicker but fit with minor cutting. Also want to fit a later plastic case ecu to allow some open source mapping

With the 123's, as soon as you change the exhaust you get boost creep(google it) Its why I went for external gate.
You'd be safe with the original downpipe/cat, but you wont get much past 300,which it probably the sweet spot on these anyhow.

So finally got the head back with a new set of exhaust valves and I good clean up. Quick coat of paint and bolted the inlet manifold on and torqued it down with new bolts still waiting for some 3mm lifter and put the cams back in small bit of progress. Also my spark plug cover and rocker cover washers finally came from japan land here a few pics. Also stuck a set of ap six pots and new steering arms on the mates subaru pics to follow

That's all for the minute. Picked up some nice sheets of stainless steel to make a cold air box for the hks mushroom filter. Once the lifters arrive and everything is timed up I'll go about getting the turbo rebuilt as their is a small bit of shaft play

This elusive and expensive little badge arrived today. Think it will really set off the rear end rather than the Halfords ralliart emblem the previous owner stuck in its place
