Loved these when I found out about them. The beams was put in the MR2 SW20 and Celica SS3 from memory. Yamaha did a great job with it. This is probably the best all rounder with this engine.

Can't see the pics unfortunately but look forward to reading more about it here.
The BEAMS in the RS200 is an evolution of the BEAMS found in late JDM MR2's / Celica's. Commonly referred to as 'red top' in the MR2 and 'black top' in the RS200. One of the biggest differences is the RS200 has dual VVTi (operates on both cams) vs the single VVTi (intake cam only) in the MR2. The RS200 version also has a higher compression ratio and larger titanium valves.

Ah, didn't know one was an evolution of the other. Thought they were just different variants made at the same time. Thank you for the education.

Is200 is a car I have wanted for a long time, but I am afraid of how uneconomical they are.

I get 30mpg (real world) in my 1.8 TFSI audi a3 with 160bhp, 185 pound of torque, and a 0 to 60 of 7.6 seconds.

The Lexus people say will return about 20mpg, and is slower with less torque.

How are you measuring that? The computer is optimistic at best.

I measure tank to tank, gallons divided by trip computer mileage.

As for how I drive, I take it steady most of time, but do short journeys, usual commute is 7 miles and I can get the computer to read between 34 and 40mpg depending on how many traffic lights I hit etc...

If I'm in a lot of stop start traffic computer will show mid 20s.

Car also has a full service history, has recently had a full service, has good well inflated tyres and everything else you would assume improves consumption.

Short journeys will be what's killing yours. 7 miles is barely enough to warm the thing up.

Trd kits are hard to come by genuine, plenty of cheap fibreglass ste around. I'd go for a subtle lip kit and duck tail spoiler

I have a Black Top BEAMS going into my Celica GT4 project. Beautiful engine, thoroughly engineered to make amazing power without mega high RPM. The Ti exhaust valves are of particular wonder, being a beta Ti / Timet 834 solution matrix that is powdered, sintered, drawn, forged, machined and then coated!

Ran a RS200 Z-Edition for several years. Chosen for the engine, and I needed to replace by C43 AMG whose gearbox had just gone bang.

Car was extremely competent with few vices and not many annoyances. Didn't think it had much character.

Replaced with my current sensible everyday car - TVR Chimaera 400

Thanks for the tasteful modification Jake.

For anyone interested, the importer send through some new pictures from the ferry terminal!

Really happy that it looks clean and to have confirmation it actually has a BEAMS engine (kept imagining some Japanese man laughing his way to the bank...).

If it's as clean underneath as it is on top then you're onto a winner smile

Looks completely standard too which is a bit of a rarity!

And they're letting you keep the flare on the pass side too smile

So the beams motor is essentially Toyotas answer to the Honda H22A7....

Very similar outputs & technology!

Should be a nice jump from 150bhp

It's more like a K20 Variant?

The BEAMS have dual vvti , 207hp 160ft-lbf versus a K20A2 (UK CTR) 200hp, 139ft-lbf or 212/150 from a JDM model

I was thinking h22a7- 209bhp/~160lbs/ft (albeit from an extra 150cc)

Just a small update... The Altezza is expected to arrive into the UK next week!

Here's a video of one racing around Central Circuit in Japan:

Looks a cracking track!

There was also a TRD front bumper which I think suits the car, no idea how I could ever get one in the UK though!
I've also since found out that the bumper above is actually called a "Legana". Some interesting reading here: http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/56369...
