Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE

I have installed the naviplus CarPlay upgrade. It was quite involved necessitating removal of quite a bit of console and dashboard. The result though is brilliant. Full Apple CarPlay (or the android equivalent if you like). This includes Google maps, Spotify etc. It uses the existing screen so the graphics are not brilliant but perfectly acceptable and quite clear for satellite view in maps. It retains most of the functionality of the existing Land Rover system including 4x4i, timed climate control etc but does lose the original Nav (no loss there!). I would certainly recommend it if you want a more modern system in your Discovery.
That’s brilliant! I’m jealous. anomaly said:

I don’t know anything about Apple Car Play. Does it require a data card and if so what happens when you take the car abroad? Do you end up with data roaming charges?anomaly said:

It essentially mirrors your iPhone. Apps on your phone that are compatible will appear on the car's screen. Content can be downloaded in advance such as maps so no need for roaming if you don't want to. Any data use will be via your phone so no need for an additional sim card.anomaly said:

Presumably if you want the mapping software to work as a satnav it will need data roaming just like your phone.
I think (but may be wrong) the phone can use GPS for location without using data. Even if it does my phone contract includes data roaming across Europe as in the UK (as I believe most do - for now at least!).anomaly said:

I'm really interested to know more about this, do you have a write up anywhere that lists the parts you need, costs and fitment details? Is it a reversible modification? Thanks!

It's basically plug and play. Everything you need is in this kit that I ordered from Australia:Thanks!

It is expensive (AU$1000) but works well and customer service is good. Installation is a bit of a pain as the centre console and part of the dashboard needs to be removed. It is totally reversible though and no wires are cut. When installed, you lose the factor nav (not a great loss as I use google maps) but keep the other functions such as 4x4info and FBH controls. Pressing the Nav button on the original system takes you into CarPlay.
Well 2020 should be an interesting year for the Discovery. I've just signed up for this:

Start in Cape Town and drive through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania before finishing in Zanzibar. I'm having it shipped to Cape Town then home again from Tanzania (if we make it!).
I'm seriously excited and can't think of a better car to do it in than a seven year old Land Rover.... I'll do some prep work on the car beforehand (service, new battery, two spare tyres, roof rack and roof tent). If anyone has any further suggestions I'd be interested. I'm slightly apprehensive of something obscure breaking in the middle of nowhere but you only live once, right? The car has never let me down in the past so I'm hoping all will be ok.

That sounds like a fantastic trip. In terms of prep I’d be tempted to also give the air suspension a once-over. Check the valve blocks and service the o-ring seals (easy DIY job), check the air tank for rust (I’ve just had mine replaced, only £120 or so, it runs along the off side chassis rail and can rust) and have a good poke around the air bags and connectors. Some under body protection might be worth looking at for sump and air tank. Keep this thread updated!
outstanding.
A colleague of mine loves this stuff and is doing something quite similar, albeit setting out on his own rather than an organised rally, but his weapon of choice is the ubiquitous 100 series land cruiser as he doesn't think an LR would be robust and reliable enough. As a life long fan of landrovers I often wonder how much is true and how much is marketing, so please keep this thread updated, or make a dedicated thread for your expedition as I would be very interested to know how a modern LR product gets on with proper overlanding.

What a great write up, I purchased a 2016 HSE Luxury last week which unfortunately broke down instantly resulting in a refund for myself from the dealer.
After speaking to quite a few different people that have and haven't owned one my initial impression was I had a lucky escape. But after mulling it over I think I was just unlucky, I still really want one though and reading your glowing report has helped!
The one I nearly owned had slightly higher miles than I wanted so I'm going to bide my time and find a lower mileage one, It looks like there will be a lot of travelling involved though as they all seem to be hundreds of miles from me!
