Rear exhaust silencer flexi disconnected so exhaust blowing and could not be emissions tested

Driver door exterior handle inoperative

Headlamps clouded up

Rear Driver side caliper binding a bit - probably due to lack of use and disc all covered in rust

Horn not working - it is a bit intermittent so assume dodgy connection in the momo adapter

Inspiration to fix the headlights then?

Nothing too major then.

Door handle fix is a bit of a faff from what I read, so I just bought a couple of 2nd hand ones off eBay. Not a horrendous DIY job to switch the lock off the old handle and refit.

Headlights are a couple of hours to DIY… the E53 I bought in the summer had horrendously cloudy headlights. Wet sanded and polished and they look brand new.

Go out and give it a few big stops and see if the brakes improve…

I've read mixed reports from people suggesting you can replace the door lock with a pattern part but some people see to think that genuine Porsche is best. It seems to be 30 for pattern and 300 for genuine.

Is it the handle that’s broke or the lock?

I'd never buy pattern for that kind of thing TBH.

I might have a fully working spare here - is it drivers side? I replaced the mechanism in my 996.2 turbo as I thought that was why the central locking was failing, but it turned out it was the key fobs (it always is) .... the old one is perfectly serviceable?

Don't know yet. Thought about looking for parts just in case. Don't really want to take the door lock apart and then leave the car outside with the door flapping around. Maybe I can keep it shut with a bungie cord or something like that.

They are VW parts. I did both sides on mine a few years ago.

After much googling and cross referencing of part numbers I ordered a couple of VW part 3D2837015.

This should be a 9 pin door lock mechanism from a MK5 Golf.

Something like: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334108336451

From memory I had to trim one tiny little plastic tab off of it, but otherwise it was literally plug and play. Might be worth doing a bit of googling to double check and compare the physical Porsche and VW parts. Both have worked perfectly since I fitted them

Yep, here is the VW logo on my OEM Porsche part - made by Rockwell in France

No Porsche part number visible

Exactly

For the sake of 25 quid per side I might just order a pair. Full disclosure I did order a pattern passenger side mechanism many years ago and I've done nothing with it. Just need to find it now or order another. The driver side exterior door handle of my 986 is also not functioning.

I can't see anything connecting the door handle to the latch mechanism. It definitely worked when I got the car so maybe something has fell off.

So the horn works but only when the car is turned off. I'm not sure exactly which key positions do what. I know that -

Key out of ignition and car off the horn works.
Key in ignition and engine running horn doesn't work.

Found the problem with my door handle. Might salvage this piece of my 986 for now so I can get the car working while I order a new one.

That metal piece connects the door latch to the door handle via that black plastic piece.

Fitted the new pattern part door latch and it feels so much better just pulling the internal cable. Still not refitted the door card and membrane. Will have to wait until I can get the replacement door handle to latch piece thing above.

Finally fitted new door latch to the passenger door. Only snapped a few door card clips which will need replacing. Also forgot to reconnect the interior door handle microswitch. First one I bought had the wrong socket for the loom and didn't fit.
