So the smoking is power steering pipe leaking. Car needs quite a few jobs doing. I've asked for a list so before I start blathering on I will wait for that and report back. I'm looking at a couple of grand easily.

'A grand' is standard for mine when it goes in for anything - new heater matrix next week... sure it will be a grand by the time they've found some other odds and ends that need sorting.

Mine's in for MOT on Saturday and need to chuck it in for a small service next month. Hoping I'll get off lightly!

Fingers crossed mate! Mine got through the MOT unscathed and I started going on about it, so it punished me and is now on axle stands on the driveway.

I'm having some new power steering pipes, new clutch fluid pipe, new gear selector cables, some drop links and i think thats it.

He suggested we leave till next time the brake pipes and rms which is wet but not leaking - whatever that means.

RE rms misting is normal, as in TADTS. Same advice from the resident in-house tech at 911uk, leave it alone if it’s not dripping oil.

What about rusty brake pipes, can any garage tackle that or is it even a simple diy job?

Any garage will do it.

However the front right goes over the subframe which is a pig. This is hidden and rots in secret.

The rear right goes over the gearbox which is also a pig. Again hidden, and rots in secret at the clips.

If the ends of these are rotted, you can bet the middles are too. Both do-able in situ with kunifer but easier if subframe is dropped and gearbox dropped.

Drop the small undertray under the passenger side door, you will see the pipes under there are the worst on the car!

If you do the front right, check the condition of the steering rack hard lines, they rot out too - you can get replacements aftermarket for £40.

Dropped mine off for the heater matrix on Saturday - leaving it with them this week as my wife's in the US on business so I can use her Touareg.

Just had a call to say in addition to the knackered heater matrix, I've got a leaking power steering pipe and car also needs an RMS (I knew it was leaking oil).

Upkeep is a never ending task!

Mine failed it's MOT on 2 broken clips that hold the front brake flexi in place. Got a few advisories on brake lines as well so will get those looked at when it's in for a service at RSR

I've been talking to a friend about buying one of these or a 986 Boxster. I still really really want a 986 myself. I said that he should assume both are the same cost to maintain although the roof on the Boxster is a potential extra cost. Faced with the dilemma of buying a 996 or a 986 its a simple choice ... unless you really want a soft top. I should explain that I really dislike the look of the 996 soft top when it is down. The back seats are even more useless and dont even get me started on the wind deflector which covers up the back seats altogether. So yes for me it is 996 for coupe or 986 for soft top.

I just googled RSR. They're marketing department are clearly targeting a very specific demographic.

986 not an option for me - I'm 6'3", I don't fit in them!

Starting to get a bit tired of the bills for my 996. I know it does a lot of miles (>100k in the last 10 years), but every time something goes wrong it seems to cost at least a grand.

Heater matrix, PS pipe replacement and new RMS will be c.£1,400 all in... and I still might have to chuck another £400 at a clutch while they are doing the RMS.

Will then need a service and MOT in the next 2 months.

986,987,996,997 not a great daily imho. Fantastic semi-daily or weekend cars though, but once you keep putting miles on them, it does get very expensive. Apart from the expensive/costly thingy, I'm really more towards reliability. Do not wanna think about that my daily car just might throw something bad and need to be in the garage/service for a few weeks. (even if it's under-warranty).

I dont really which I keep trying to put out of my mind and was doing quite well until your timely reminder. I'm only 6 2 but powerfully built. I think I'd need a custom seat of some sort to really fit. I believe the 987 seats fit and put you lower.

Clicked through to your profile but couldn't see your 996 pic due to photo bucket madness.

People who want quality work carried out on their car?

There's no marketing team, no glass fronted gin palace, no receptionist in short skirts just Dave and Russ. Russ has forgotten more than most will ever know over the years, he was part of the Moby Dick race team back in the day. That'll do for me biggrin
