Be careful, sometimes uprated suspension doesn't work well with tall sidewalls. The car may start to bounce noticeably on the tyre and work the damper less. This feels sh!t and lessens grip too.
Ok thanks. How would I know if this is happening?
The effect is pretty noticeable, especially in pitching front to back. Vertically stiffer sidewalls will help.
Found it back here. Yes i think i have this going on now.
poppopbangbang also mentioned stiff sidewalls in his thread, it may be worth asking him too. I'm interested as I have plans for a 996 on 17s!

I am using Yokohama AD08R, 235 on the front and 295 on the back. They are many times better than a R888 or similar in the wet, being actually usable in standing water but still a cut above a "normal" summer tyre in the dry - they also have a very stiff sidewall, something really needed on a 996 due to the high rear axle loading compared to most saloons and hatches.
I'm using standard 996 wheels with correct N rated tyres - which I'm not really interested in personally. I'd presume therefore they can handle the correct loads. My crude bum sensor tells me the new fronts are softer as there is less crashing from the front compared to before. The new rears feel quite similar to the ones from before.

I can't decide if i should try pressures first as that's easy. Then again what's the point of adjustable dampers if you never adjust them?

Those 17's look lovely.

Personally I think the pressures are a little low, always run my 18's at 32/40, think the handbook says 36/44. Both indies I've used have always set them at 32/40.

This

I tried different pressures first thing.

Porsche recommended pressure is 36 36 on the 17. I've gone with 34 34.

Been out for about an hour and it feels fine now. Calling myself on being a drama queen.

Still never adjusted the dampers. Need to man up!

I doubt there's anything drastically wrong. You just need to dial in to the softer more squidgy feel. You may find there is more depth and colour to the response and feel but that it's just not quite as razor sharp. It's all a matter of preference. My car is on 18s but ride comfort wise there's not a huge amount in it between standard dampers and M030. There is a much bigger difference going from 18" to 17". I tried it like this for a couple of weeks when getting the wheels returned and similarly have spent some good wheel time in a regular 17" wheeled car. Once you load the tyre the feel is perhaps more what you are used to. It's just that transition time to have to get used to.

It felt awful at first. Just turning the steering wheel there was a feeling of lag. Turn wheel - wait - and then the car turns. I thought i need to get used to it. But then as explained car started bouncing around when loaded up in bends. So clearly pressures were way too low in front.

Anyway now on 34 34 and car feels identical to how i remember it with 18. I'll try some different pressures but going to stick to same front and back for a while.

There might be a subtle difference - well there must be. I can feel weight shifting around more. I also sense a bit more understeer when exiting a bend and getting on the power. But its still got way more grip than my ability.

This was just an experiment to see how the car responded to 17. So far so good. Now i either decide to stick to standard sizes or try even skinnier on the back. Nothing drastic - maybe 235 45 17.

Google says the 993 was available with 205/55/R16 on the front and 225/50/R16 on the rear.

Here's mine:

Thats a pretty standard and safe set up. I seem to remember you were going the uprated suspension route. If you're doing this and favour the B road blast rather than daily commute motorway then you might want something a bit more aggressive.
What would be more aggressive?

Looking at my setup now I see more rear toe than Dammit.

Nothing much to report here. Car running well. I've given up worrying about the oil pressure constantly maxed out over say 3000 rpm. Brake fluid level and water have not been touched. I'm still unsure about the whole 17 or 18 dilemma. I do know the 17 wheels i have are in shocking condition so they will need a refurb if i keep them. Can't decide on colour. It can't be silver surely with the car being silver. I'm thinking about a match to the Boxster red seats or to the darker red from the Porsche badge itself or maybe a bronze sort of darker gold type colour. I could go with 2 colours but not sure if that's a bit fussy. Also I've seen some little rust bubbles around the door catches but not sure if they're worth tackling. I'm beginning to tire of the seats too. They really need to go. My limited research tells me 9x7 seats will bolt in so they could work. Always liked the sports seats i had in my 997. Thing is the ones on ebay are always black. That's fine but i do like my red and I'm not sure if you can make black into red. Ok so quite a few jobs on my mind.

Want me to have a check of my pressure next time I use it?

Also I've got the same rust bubbles on my catches, my friendly bodyshop man quoted me £200 as its only minor. The main issue was the little VIN sticker on the drivers side located right by the catch - I'm sure Porsche can supply a new one if I need to peel mine off but I haven't investigated yet.

FWIW, my oil pressure is just over 3 at 70, and 4 at 90.

My temperature sits bang on 80, but creeps up to 85-90 when stood in traffic.

Because I've been going on about how great this car is one of my mates has decided to buy one but seems drawn to the gen 2 3.6 for some bizarre reason. It'll be interesting if he gets one and we can compare.

So any thoughts on wheel colour as i think thats next?

Even on a silver car?

Old school Porsches had red wheels. I'll trawl some Google pics.

I'm not sure red 17" wheels would suit it. I'd play around with photoshop or pick up a can of that rubber coat stuff in a similar as you can pressure wash it off if you don't like it.

Red centre Fuchs with red Carrera script down the side of a white 80's SC is a different kettle of fish to a silver 996 biggrin

Depending on the style of the wheel the 2 tone scheme with silver lip Anniversary 986/996 wheels look nice.

Yeah or just less. Its been on eBay for a couple of months I think. We've been talking 996's - me and my mate - for nearly 2 months so I'm a little surprised he finally bought one. This is the first one he has seen. He has driven mine a few times obviously.

The interior colour makes a nice change from grey/black leather. I hope your mate enjoys getting to know his new "steed".
