So I've had a bad weekend with the 996.

I tried to adjust the kw suspension and failed. Basically the knobs which are exposed are covered in crap, hard to access and are either jammed or required better leverage or maybe even some wd.

I noticed that at low revs in a higher gear so low speed the oil pressure rises and falls in line with throttle. So press the throttle and it rises significantly and release the throttle and it decreases significantly. This when the revs are basically constant.

Finally i have or have had some form of clutch, gearbox or gearbox mount failure. So i noticed at some traffic lights i could not find first. It was there but a bit further forward than i could get the lever. Then when pulling off in 2nd there was some juddering. Also while moving in 2nd at say 2000 revs if i press and then release the throttle the lever moves around 2 inches forward and then back again and yo yos around with engine load. Then when i went to park i put it into reverse and it sort of jumped out and into 1st once i started moving - not sure - the effect i noticed was like someone pressing the brake abruptly but only the back wheels so it felt like the back of the car lifted in sympathy.

That's not good... hopefully just a gearbox mount.

Mine had one a few years back whilst in for a service/MOT, and I don't remember it being a particularly big/expensive job.

The part is c.£150.... positively cheap by Porsche standards.

At first I was going to suggest a poltergeist. On reflection, something fairly basic and hopefully cheap. I would pop in and see a specialist as soon as possible.

If it is a gearbox mount can I drive it to the garage / specialist safely as its a 10 or 15 mile drive?

i'd be nervous about driving it until I'd spoken to someone who knew if you could do more damage.

My specialist just said we need to look at it. I have no idea what that means in terms of getting it there.

Are you a member of the RAC/AA etc, better still get a mate who doesn’t live at your address to use his membership to trailer it to the he specialist.

Gear selector cables.

If not, Engine and 'Box mount(s).

If not, rebuild gearbox.

Drive the car, the world won't come crashing down. But don't induce shunt like that until you've at least established the potential cause.

In addition, dump the transmission oil, then poke a smaller finger forward in the drain hole to find the magnet and see if it's laden with swarf.

If the car has done more than 70k on the original box, the layshaft front bearing WILL be pitted and starting to whine. Mine is, and reminds one of its presence in fourth, fifth and sixth at revs. Gearbox will come out in the summer.

I'd love to get stuck in but unfortunately lack of time and a drive mean its off to the specialist again. Hopefully Priscilla - my new name for her - makes it in one piece.

So the garage tell me the mounts and selector cables are all sound. Now they're thinking something amiss inside the box.

Sorry to hear that ATM... internals are likely to be expensive frown

I'm surprised it would actually drive if the internals are broken to the extent the lever moves as much as it does.

Good luck!

All I know is what they tell me. I thought the exhausts looked low at the back. And I get a juddering like something is bouncing around when i try to pull off in 2nd. 1st worked this morning the first 5 minutes I drove the car.

When my 'box disintegrated I just lost a half the gears... made worse as my clutch was on the way out and it slipped like mad if I tried to ride it in a higher gear.

I was fortunate that I was close to home when the 'box finally went pop ... so I just nursed it home and had it recovered to my Indy.

I think a full rebuild was c.£4k all in... I'll see if I can find the invoice tonight.

low hanging exhaust and and the feeling something is bouncing around would indicate engine mounts, as I have said before.
To me it looks a lot like that from your video, but on the other hand your specialist would surely have noticed that...

Good luck, and keep us updated!!

Engine mounts were new within the last 24 months when engine was rebuilt.

I thought engine attached / bolted to subframe or cradle and then this is attached / bolted to car?
