Apparently is more economical to get a 2nd hand box - roughly 2.5k. My garage is also recommending a new clutch and flywheel. Not sure how I know if the clutch and fly are really necessary.
I think it depends on how much wear they clutch has had, it's out so it may be cheaper to change it now in the long run
I think the guy said he changed it when he rebuilt the engine so its only been in about about 18 months.

Unless it's contaminated the clutch should be fine... my 1st clutch lasted >100k miles, 2nd one has been in c.50k and was inspected when I had an RMS last month, along with the DMF, and both were fine.

Inspect the clutch, flywheel etc and if they're fine and were changed 18 months ago - don't bother.

Sorry to hear of your woes ATM! My 996 gearbox gave out in warranty, thankfully!

How many miles has it done since you changed them?

I'd tell them to leave alone.

O
No way it needs a clutch and DMF then.

So are the garage just guessing or trying their luck - should i ask them why they need changing maybe?

Have they looked at them yet? If so; have them show you the wear. If not; they're right in that it would be the best time to change them as the labour is effectively free as they 'box is being dropped anyway.

So... may be trying it on... may be trying to save you money!

If they've done 10k - I'm sure they're fine. Have them look them over and likely leave them in place.

If it’s not too much of a pain, either get them to sent you images of the flywheel face, clutch centre plate (both sides) and the clutch cover face.
If they won’t do that for you, I’d be wary, and I’d suggest you go and get images yourself and post them on here (as long as the car isn’t miles away from your home ?)

The garage will assume the clutch and flywheel are as old as the car/engine/gearbox, if you tell them they’re recently fitted, they may be happy to refit them.

The problem is if they were to refit an old clutch/flywheel and a month down the road the clutch fails/starts to slip, they know you’d be picking the phone up to them to complain. They’re either trying to avoid that situation, or they’re trying it on (though it’s unlikely to be the latter).

I guess if they've only dropped the oil from the box and its still in situ then they haven't seen the clutch condition. I don't know if they can take those pics with the box in place or its off the car already.

Not sure about RSS but I used these gearbox and yellow engine mount insert on my Cayman and I am impressed. For a purely road car I would probably go with the softest insert for lower NVH. Sorry to hear about the gearbox...

996 engine mounts are the same shape as Boxster gearbox mounts. You can refurb these with poly for an 'upgrade'.

After much umming and arring I've bit the bullet and purchased a G96.01 gearbox from a seller in Germany who was recommended to me by nebpor and jonindorset - thanks. Hopefully now I can forget ab out this little saga for a while. Well I still have to deal with my garage telling me it wont fit and that I need to build a whole new car round this odd gearbox.

It does. But for a stripped/semi-stripped car I'd go for CAE shifter! A true work of art! (also quite xpensive...)

There is also a 2" riser kit that rises the whole console and keeps everything looking standard.

But they stopped offering it frown
Maybe if enough people would want one, they'd offer it again scratchchin

Are these any good?

I've not heard from anyone who has one.

Theres a couple of guys on Boxa.net using them on Boxsters. Their cars are quite well modified aimed towards track days of course.
