Mine had been parked up since the Silverstone Classic. Decided to pull it out of the garage on Saturday and use it, took my youngest swimming then off shopping, so just mundane jobs but really enjoyed it. It sounded really good in the multi-storey car park in Guildford, even better through the Hindhead tunnel
My driving now is just urban crawl. I used to live out in the sticks with great windy fun roads Bang on my doorstep. Now it is a 20 minute drive to find roads which are not crowded and even then they are not great roads. So yeah for commuting in traffic the 996 feels great but really it is not fit for purpose. Sure I can make it work and I have but I'd rather be in the big v8 barge and I've even been looking at second hand 7 series bmw cars thinking thats what I need. I'm not moving anytime soon so I something needs to change. I dont even have any parking too.
Nearly 3 months since car used. Ok the battery was a little flat but my 5 litre powered battery booster got it going. No drama with getting the bonnet to release now I'm fully educated on the drill of closing the door to allow the central locking button above the radio to operate which then disengages the lock on the bonnet lever. Personally I think thats a stupid design flaw - why cant we use the central locking button when the door is ajar?
I found a nice new scuff on the front corner which looks like a black car or more likely a tyre has rubbed on the bumper.

Yes, but the later cars it needs some juice in the battery to release the frunk. That may be on 996.2 though? Mine's always unlocked with the drivers window wide open in the garage
Mine lives outside. So window closed and doors locked. When you open with the key if the car is shut down then the central locking remains locked. This locks the lever in the down position and you cant open the bonnet. You would never know this until you experience it.Chris Stott said:
Mine is as ATM's... cable release, but it won't open if the battery is completely dead and the central locking is locked. Key will still open the door but the central locking remains locked.
The rear still opens though, and there are jump points in the engine compartment.
Fixed that for you.The rear still opens though, and there are jump points in the engine compartment.
It made no sense to me. I had to get the AA out. I had a bit of electric but didn't realise you have to close the driver's door before the central locking button on the dash will work.
I also didn't know about the jump points in the engine compartment. I presumed I had some form of electrical fault.
What made my situation worse was when I used the key in the lock I turned it too far or it stuck a bit in the open position and started opening the window. This zapped any juice the battery had left in it and left me with a window down by about 3 inches and it was also outside in the rain. So just bad news all round. I know now the whole situation was caused by my lack of knowledge and inexperience. Just like the first time you get a trombone you were not expecting.

I have a wet inner door card on the driver's side. Not leaking through to the floor, which it did in my 986. It's just the door for now.
Also the rear window seal is coming apart at the corner. It was curling up slightly but now looks a lot worse.
When auto glass was out replacing the windscreen on our other car, he fixed my rear window seal which was doing the same as yours - squeezed it back in, then used some black goo on it - worked a charm! Also the rear window seal is coming apart at the corner. It was curling up slightly but now looks a lot worse.

Most pressing problem now is the poor battery and the dodgy power cables combo making hot starts problematic. Luckily the car died outside my house and refused to start. So I am now not using the car because I dont want to get stranded. Is this power cable heat problem an easy fix or does it require a competent mechanic?
