Peugeot 208 Gti
Discussion
Well after a pretty difficult 3 years with a mk5 Golf Gti that had obviously had a tough life, it was time to replace it before the Mot cost me a huge amount of money!

And after a difficult search which lasted over 6 months, where I didn't really know what type of car I wanted, I saw this immaculate, 208 Gti which I snapped up straight away!

It's an absolute blast to drive! The Golf was almost too capable and numb to drive right up until you reach the very limit! The 208 feels alive down a B road and while it lacks the low down punch of the Golf, you can rev it right out and the throttle response is in a different league.
The steering is a bit too light, but it is so precise. There's huge amounts of grip, even on Nexen tyres, which will be replaced soon.
The engine is very quiet, I'm definitely going to look at a couple mods to get some sound out of it.
The cup holders are rubbish! The build quality in general is good, but the glove box is incredibly flimsy!
Cruising to work and back I got 42mpg this week. Tax is also more than half of the Golf.
I am one very happy man!

Nice, here's mine, just coming to end of 18month lease. Loads of grip as you say and good fun pressing on. 36mpg avg across 7000miles for me.
Good luck with it. You'll likely have the luxury of avoiding Peugeot main dealers which is a bonus as they have been useless for me. Looks good in that colour!

Its a good choice and a fabulous little car. I've had mine for about 15 months and its been totally reliable and fun with great performance, comfortable but sporty ride and good economy. Most road tests put it a close second to the Fiesta ST but for me it wins hands down in the real world of day to day motoring on less than perfect British roads. I am in the perfect position to compare the two as we have both in the family.
Great cars, loved my mates old one, always thought it was 'better' built than my Fiesta ST Mk7 that i had at the same time, along with looking more fresher, modern etc.
Although he did have a few issues with his and was Dyno'd Twice at 160'ish bhp!

He did trade it in for the current Corsa 'E' VXR though after he ruined it lol.

Cheers guys. Never thought I'd end up in a Peugeot, but I'm glad I did!
As for the lack of noise I'm thinking of an induction kit to give it a bit more of a growl. I leave for work at 5am so don't want to be playing with the exhaust and making it too loud.
Now to start planning a road trip or 2!

It's not so much it's quiet but more a case of the noise it makes is a bit insiped when compared with a Cooper S with a JCW exhaust (My last car) or the Fiesta ST (the car I nearly chose rather than my own 208 GTI). I'd forgive the lackluster exhaust note of the Pug if it was a price to pay for quiet motorway cruising but, sadly, the car suffers from a rather intrusive drone from the bassy exhaust at 70-80mph. The engine is very quiet,
Other than that I agree with wholeheartedly with the OP. The 208GTI is fast, flexible, agile and great fun. It isn't quite as crisp, as "on it" as the Fiesta ST or Cooper S but makes up for it by having the nicest interior and by being the most comfortable, best equipped with the most forgiving suspension and the easiest of the three to the live with day to day.
So spent a bit more time driving the car now, and absolutely loving it!
According to the computer I got 53mpg on a 60ish mile drive up to Cheddar Gorge the other day. This may have dropped to around 42 by the top of it
It's my first car with cruise control which is great, unless around too many incompetent british drivers. The speed limiter is awful though, and really jerky!
Dipped beam is rubbish compared to the last few cars I've owned, and has a very short beam range, while main beam is the complete opposite!

Great to hear you love your GTi. In all honesty the car is not perfect but coming from clinically cold German cars to something a bit different makes a refreshing change. The observation regarding the dipped beam, I have never noticed and is not a problem for me but maybe a change of bulbs will resolve that issue. The speed limiter I've only ever used once and prefer to re-set the cruise control instead.According to the computer I got 53mpg on a 60ish mile drive up to Cheddar Gorge the other day. Its taken me a while to find the perfect driving position as the small wheel/instrument cluster combo is odd at first but now I'm used to it I don't think about it. Unusually for me its only car (so far!) that I haven't modified in some way with the exception of fitting a splitter to give the front a bit of a more sporty look. I like it just the way it is.

Same problem. I sit with the seat slightly higher and the wheel slightly lower than I found ideal. Now I don't even notice.Edited by 2172cc on Monday 1st May 09:14
One thing I do notice though. Once used to an 208 and having a drive in anything else their steering wheels feel HUGE.
Nice car! It really seems to be a great everyday hot hatch, i am very tempted to by one, though the THP engine stories scare the st out of me, how did you think regarding that? The later ones seems to be much better but still lots of potential bad stuff. Ironic that peugeot built good engines until they started working with the germans
Basically when I searched for common faults nothing came up about engine failures on the pages I read! But at the moment it starts on the button, sounds/runs sweet and uses no oil or water
I've had it 3 months now and the only issue has been a blown dipped beam bulb! Upgraded to Philips X-Treme vision bulbs and the range has improved a lot.
One minor gripe is you can't seem to set a start up volume on the stereo, so if you've been enjoying a few loud tunes, it can scared the crap out of you the next morning!
Took it to Wales last month and it was great fun on the deserted roads. Just could do with replacing the Nexen N8000 tyres on the front as they lose grip very suddenly and tramline a fair bit.

But of a thread revive, but not too much.
Few questions if I may please gents....
What are these like on the motorway? Is there a boomy-ness to it?
What's the stereo like? Particularly for podcasts!
Is the engine really that quiet? Some of the YouTube videos I have seen make it seem pretty audible. Not as tuneful, for want of a better word, as the fiesta... But certainly not hiding under the duvet. Though these were videos of facelift models.
Has anyone got one with the glass roof and if so is it worth it?
Probably going to look at a 208gti prestige at the weekend. 208hp and the glass roof. They do look smart.
