I recently drove a Renault Twizzy in the Lake District and it was great fun, and faster (but by no means fast) than I expected.

It got me thinking, could one be used for a daily commute? Obviously it would depend on a number of factors; climate, type of road, distance etc.

Does anyone drive theirs as a daily commute vehicle under similar conditions?

- Commute 50 miles per day (I beleive range is about 80 miles)
- Route consists or tight back roads for 12.5miles and then 12.5 miles of main A road (but not dual carraigeway or motorway)
- Live in Britain, are these things weather proof if left in the office carpark for a day in the rain?

Anyone else had similar thoughts, or am I mad? A Twizzy as the work commute could mean something more sportier for the weekend.

I'd have one if it wasn't for the stupid battery rental they insist on.

However on your points:

Range is only about 45 miles.
They can be chipped so they go 70mph (you'll loose more range though)
As for weather proofing, not really! You can get optional doors and aftermarket plastic windows which help, but isn't sealed from the elements.

I don't, but I did look at them more closely a few times.

My main issue is lack of doors. Which means you need to for Britain, most likely dress up like you are riding a motorbike. Plus you need somewhere to keep it, both at home and wherever you park up at work. No fun finding the seats full of water when you want to go home. Plus the obvious security issues.

These limitations render the Twizzy as more of a toy in my eyes.

I'm also not convinced on the battery hire costs either.

I think this issue is currently universal for all EV's however.

But when I did a cost analysis a diesel smart ForTwo worked out considerably cheaper to buy and run in a pence per mile equation. And not far off a petrol one. So the low running cost argument of EV's simply evaporated, considering all their other limitations.

I think the Twizzy may be cheaper these days and the smart more money and no diesel option. But sadly the Twizzy does just seem to be a toy, rather than a practical mode of transport.

A shame as only a few changes and it'd be probably quite a good commuter vehicle.

If I wanted one I'd get the similar Rayttle E28
Second to the market so learnt a lesson and has proper hinged doors
