I've been lurking on this thread for a while now, and to be fair, I would humbly suggest you might not have helped yourself.

If you're going to run it as a banger, it's better not to spend any money on it.
If you're going to run it as economically as possible, then fit the parts you needed to get it through an MOT. Don't spend time and money on cosmetic surgery.
If it's a keeper for many years, do the works on it,and enjoy it.

I think you spent (some) money on cosmetics, and ignored the stuff that was needed. (set fire and stand well back) smile

I confess I was disappointed (a random internet stranger with a car) that you didn't just chuck the consumable parts on it for a few hundred quid.

I know where you're coming from, I do feel like I've sent my racehorse to the glue factory for coming second and I really did think about doing the parts but when they had it up on the ramps I could see the extent of the oil leak all over the place.

I wasn't that bothered about their exhaust and bushes assessments but the oil leak hadn't been that bad before, I think a seal has let go and shat it everywhere so it's best to call it a day.

As a random internet person myself, I'm disappointed - if I could sack off the wife and kids and house I'm renovating so I could get time to get under it, I'd have done it myself but the labour means I'd be sinking £3-400 in a car that's liable to cost another £500+ to get the engine sorted/swapped soon and is worth £800 tops.

It's best I sell it now before I do end up emotionally attached to it and sinking more in it.

Besides, I've bought an Alfa so can repeat the same mistakes again...

Ah well, what's done is done. Best of luck with the Alfa - it would be interesting to see how things go with this,so if you can be bothered to keep the thread running, I'd be interested in reading. You have a nice turn of phrase, and put things across well. (Making amends for the earlier mild roasting) smile

The old girl isn't dead yet, cash changed hands at the train station with a bit of discussion about its overall condition and there's a very strong chance that the engine will just be swapped out, the bits tidied and someone else will get a pretty alright old Saab.
