Interesting project! Bookmarked.

As an aside, to my knowledge the 2 most respected high-power turbo 911 tuners (9e & ES) remove the front diff and drive shafts and just go RWD.
Not just about weight saving wink

Good luck with the build.

Dragged in here via the front page. Looking forward to reading it all!

Quick question OP - am I right in saying the Porsche specialist is near Droitwich in Worcestershire? I recall them having a black 997 with a broken engine a while back and daydreaming about the opportunity myself!

Would love to work in this area, work in IT and love cars, would be perfect, wonder how you get into that line of work ?
Could try somewhere like here EMA Academy I guess?

Otherwise something like the old Apexi PFCs are relatively simple to work on I think, only issue is the cost of all the engines you blow up while learning by trial and error I guess ??
Cheers samoht and DT8R, going to do some reading,

Funnily enough I have an ECU on my desk right now, my sons Astra went tits up with a suspected ECU problem, wonder if it could end up on standalone management ?

It's great to see you so immersed in this project Angus - this is the excitable and slightly geeky Angus that I first met all those years ago when the LS Griffith was still in its infancy at Ian's place!

And when it first got out to stretch it's legs to Chatsworth you had to be passenger, but we did do this -

He's called his Apollo for the amount of mileage he has on it.

Hi, My name is Angus (Goose) originally none on PH name Argoose but for a long time was very ill but like all petrolheads I am back and wanted to say hello with this.

I am not a business I am a private developer that enjoys building cars. This is not my first LS Conversion I have modified a number of cars using the LS1/LS3 power plant. My first project car was a TVR Griffith, which was done over seven years ago by a developer in stoke.

But have always wanted to do a Porsche over two years ago I started investigating the 997. Why, well it’s no secret that Porsche have had lots of problems with their engines. I was shock at the cost and the more research I did the more I wanted to do this project. As we are aware from discussions with the US this is the first 997 to have a LS conversion.

Project Car
Purchased 997 C4 2006 from Porsche specialist with a problem engine. Sold the engine to nice chaps at Hartech so nothing is wasted. We have used the existing gearbox with an adapter plate and the existing AWD system. We have continued to use all the existing instruments and Porsche engine management systems but have removed all the Porsche ancillaries. We lost so much weight from the removal of the Porsche engine and ancillaries that we had to fit smaller springs at the rear so that the car sat as before.

A standard LS3 with a good road/race cam can give around 520BHP with great torque and good economy. In addition to this we have added a turbo and we are looking for around 600bhp. Craig at Dyno Torque has carried out all the development work with testing and tuning at Emerald.[url]

I love stuff like this. So great to see there are people that think the same way as me but have the balls, knowledge and £££ to do it.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback and for visiting the build page.

I am always on hand to help and I have other parts to this project to I want to do including other LS Porsche projects.

I will health permitting start a new car project in October.

So say the engine in my 996.1 C2 goes pop, and I'm faced with a potential £10-12k bill for a Hartech rebuild... broadly, how much would it cost to stick a non-turbo V8 in it?
Well if we looked at a brand new crated LS3 and ancillaries around 13k
It's an interesting proposition in that scenario then. How would a 997'd LS3 conversion be priced in the market? A hartech rebuild bolsters values (nowhere near the rebuild price though) so wonder how it would work for a 'better' overall engine - more power and better economy. It's an interesting question but don't wanto hijack this epic thread!
Whilst I congratulate the OP to thde fabulous achievement and great effort (and I d like to hear the noise and go for a spin) I think the market will always value an original car more (especially with a quality rebuild) Porsche prices as crazy as they are it ll be only a short while till 996 and 997s catch up (think off what happened to 964 over thelast years) and a nonoriginal car will never be up there (ok singer you are exceptional) imo

Great build, top work!

Do you have some details of the company that did the work? I would love to put a 500bhp monster engine in my Defender

Cheers

Craig at dynotorque did the conversion along with Angus' last project which I now own.

Have to admit I hadn't met Craig before I bought the TVR but is the the nicest bloke I have ever come across in the motor industry. Lot of knowledge and passion for what he does and the variety of what he has come in is a testimont to that, everything from a merchillargo in for a 4wd to 2wd conversion to ls conversions in almost everything! Would thoroughly recommend him for any project like this.

The question should be what Porsche model because once a C4 or C2 have the conversion its no longer JUST a C2 or C4 performance. The redeveloped cars are more in line with the Turbo's and will be clearly quicker than GT3's even a tunned one. If you go with the LS3 Turbo's or LS7 then without spending a fortune with Porsche specialist, you will have 600BHP+. You do that to a 997 Turbo and thats going to be constant rebuilds and you have got to have very very deep pockets. You do the same to a GT3 and you are talking about spends money that will make your eye's water. So going into LS tunned Porsche 997/996 or Cayman makes real sense and will do when your friend at the pub with his GT3 RS has mortgage the house sent the wife out to work and still has got near to you with horse power or Torque. This alone will make real sense and I think that will have an impact on values.

Here's the final consideration take my car a 997 C4 LS3 Turbo and nothing is stressed or over stressed. So when your LS3 Turbo has gone round the clock and is still going strong will you care that its not a GT3 or a Turbo. Every time you have a service and you are smiling because you don't feel like your wallet bruised at the service cost will you care its not a Turbo especially when that Turbo owner at the lights was upset you could stay with him without trying.
