I have owned this heap for some months and still haven't had the dodgy brakes fixed, but now it is past MoT time, so I had better get the blooming things done. For the moment, the off roader can stay off road.

You might think that this was a good time of year for UMMing, but I have been so useless and disorganised that I still haven't got the brakes done or had the thing in for an MoT, so the UMM is still ingloriously SORNed. I hope I will wake it up before the winter is past.

I feels yer pain. Things that go ping out of jalopies are always imposssible to (a) find, and (b) put back in.

Unlike every Landy I have owned, the UMM even has a good heater (it sits visibly on top of the lump of engine that protrudes into the cabin), and the opportunity to use three upside down window wipers is much fun, but still the Lusitanoshed sits on its arse.

I am hatching an insane plan to buy a station wagon version of the Alter II. Because reasons. The only one I have found so far is a LHD one in Belgium.

Classic car prices on the continent always seem high to me. I do not know if the sellers get anything like the prices that they ask. I negotiated with a German seller of a Lotus Elite last year. His asking price was absurd by UK standards but he would not budge. Last I heard the car was still on sale.

In the UK, the bestest UMM ever might go for 3K if you were lucky.

I am in London and the UMM is in Oxfordshire, so alas no 4x4 snow fun for me this week. I have done a small amount of urban slithering about in a 1979 Lancia Beta 1600, which with front wheel drive and thin tyres has been OK.

I like the fact that there are two separate mis-spellings on the gearbox plate of the UMM, viz:-

Although the UMM is foogly, it's also kinda cool. I think -

The truck runs RWD when in 2x2 mode. It has freewheeling hubs on the front wheels. Yup, it's a bit lonely being an UMMist, although people often think it is a Land Rover. I love Land Rovers, but the UMM is I think better on and off road than a leaf sprung Landy, and has (relatively) better equipment and cabin comfort than an old Landy. It also has very good headlights, unlike an old Landy.

I know one other person who owns an UMM. There is a friendly UMM facebook group, run by a couple of Portuguese blokes. UMMs are still plentiful in Portugal and in Portuguese Africa.
