Draining the engine oil this evening, nasty stuff and a lot of it!

Surprisingly the hydraulic oil was really clean and much to my relief the power steering still works!

Couldn't have said it better biggrin I was absolutely amazed when it started and ran so sweetly. I think in the past someone has put what looked like an old cam belt on it instead of the proper one to drive the water pump which in turn drives the fans as on revving her up that quickly shredded! I've looked up replacements on the Marcus Glenn military spares site and they are quite reasonably priced so will get some on order. I've got a few other projects on the go at the moment so progress may slow on the Stolly for a while, for a start I'd really like to get her under cover but on suggesting to the farmer I could build a lean to over it I received 'hmmm' as a reply. Farmer for 'no' biggrin

I heard about that! From what I remember the vehicle that did it has now sadly been left to rot, it'd be nice if someone went to the trouble of saving it.

Looking on HMVF I saw this thread on a diesel Mk2 Stolly, running a Cummins V8 diesel and clutches on the driveshafts so the majority of the time they just run on the centre wheels. No wind up!

Yep I'd say the engineering in that for a home effort is certainly impressive, I am more keen on leaving things alone though particularly when it comes to engine choice, nothing beats the noise of a B81!

Love it! Years ago whilst on holiday I bought this from a shop on our travels

It's marked underneath as 'Berliet Alvis' which seems odd as Berliet are a French truck manufacturer, turns out years ago they intended to build a licence built copy of the Stolly called the 'Auroch'. Never knew that!

That's awesome I did see that for sale in the news but hadn't spotted the Stolly! To think it probably swam out there too. I think I'm right in saying there's a nearby military firing range and testing area at Kirkcudbright as well so it may be from there.
I will indeed take the time to edit my posts soon, it's been on the list of things to do for a while as it's ruined multiple great threads! For now it seems easier to upload on the Thumbsnap thing directly on here

Very kind of you to offer mvm, they are great fun aren't they! The first and last time I went in one was at Wild Trax years ago and as I'd sprained my ankle at the time I managed to loose my footing and fall over in the back biggrin
Progress has more or less stopped completely at the moment as we're off to the War and Peace show next week in the Ferret and I've been flat out getting my Dad's 1977 Dodge pickup all sorted for him. The engine was pissing oil out from everywhere and on stripping it all down the front inner wings and headlight panel were found to be completely rotten too. A bit more than the weekend job I was hoping for!

Just to add has your Dad been out and about in the Champ much recently? I'm sure I remember you saying it wasn't getting the use so much anymore. Would love to drive one to compare to my Series Landy, leagues ahead I imagine

Well, we have just returned from the War and Peace Revival down in Kent having stayed for a few days with my little Ferret. It is an absolutely superb show and I'd urge anyone to go, you'll never see anything quite like it.

Playing Nazi Zombies in the back of Matt's Bedford biggrin
We spotted another of Trevor's old Stollies there, his full runner that he'd owned since 1996. We got chatting to the new owner Dave, a fantastically jolly and friendly chap with a taste for incredibly bright shirts and Stalwarts, having owned five over the past 13 years!

Anyway having chewed the fat he took us out across the site at serious speed in the back of thing, and absolutely hammered it round the arena over the bumps and through the dirt. It was just absolutely fantastic, I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face for hours!

Awesome! The owner of the white one I have tried to get in contact with as I'm told he has a set of tyres possibly for sale. Much needed!

I planned to have a crack at the old beast today but unfortunately had the pleasure of replacing the window regulator on my Skoda Fabia thanks to the cable snapping. Been driving around with a piece of 2x2 holding the glass up for a week biggrin
Nevertheless, I did have a closer look at a few bits and pieces including taking the inspection plates off of the fuel tank. It is not good in there! Whilst I was sat in the hull I had a good look over the transfer box as I believe that is where the driveline fault lies. I may be wrong but it looks as if front left hand output bearing has shat itself and exposed the race outside the casing

Thankyou very much PH, I never thought I'd see another week of fame!
Funnily enough shortly after we dismissed the squaddie escape story as bks I actually heard confirmation that it was true, and they'd included a newspaper report that detailed the culprit getting court martialled for the act.

That's right, the episode featured some new wonderful off road vehicle being tested somewhere. Most of the original episodes have been lost now so I'd say no chance of finding it.
There are quite a few differences between Mk1 and Mk2, the windows being one major improvement. The braking system was changed (more complex), and for some reason they added a hydraulic throttle too. A lot of others too no doubt.

I suppose it's time for half an update on our beast as it's been a while. Things are moving along at a snail's pace unfortunately for the thread due to various other things getting in the way. Thankfully on the farm where the Stolly is stored the chap next door to our workshop is moving out, meaning I can take on his unit. More space allows me to get my recently purchased 2.5 tonne two post car lift installed and actually crack on with getting other projects completed, then work can really begin.

We have stripped out one beam, some floor plates and some of the bulkhead to get better access for removing the fuel tank. The plan after this is to remove the engine, gearbox and transfer box as one lump. A chap on the farm has a Ford Cargo lorry with 3 tonne Atlas crane so that should be the perfect tool for the job.
Tomorrow night I am heading down to view some part worn tyres for it from a fellow Stolly owner, he owns the white one pictured swimming earlier in the thread.

Cheers guys, and definitely Nick, more than welcome to come for a drive as well.
The proper bar grip tyres nowadays are pretty much unobtainium for them unfortunately, there are 14.00x20 tyres available in the correct sort of ply rating available in modern style plant treads but dear me are they expensive, especially when there's all six to get!
The news isn't all bad however, I've just got back from my trip down to view the tyres and what a great little evening that was. The tyres themselves were pretty bloody good, all Mark wanted them for was the rims as he's got some other modern ones to go on, so hopefully I'll get them for a reasonable price. His Stolly was absolutely stunning, it was immaculate and run like a Swiss watch. Interesting to have a good nosey around a Mk2 as well, more small differences than you think! For carting it round the country he also had a Scammell/Leyland Daf DROPS in as new condition. Now that was a beast!
I got a few useful close ups of the swim board arrangement and such for reference when it comes to putting ours back on too.
