I was going to suggest a meet up (Stokesley Helmsley area) now that mine has an MOT again
But I ll wait till yours is fully mapped and the weather is better!
Sounds good, or even head out west and ill meet you in the Dales. I tend to stick more north in the North Pennines (Hartside pass etc) but keep meaning to go south of the a66 and do some of the stuff down there. I also really want sme pics with Ribblehead viaduct hahaBut I ll wait till yours is fully mapped and the weather is better!
Well i've got the proper oil in now and i've been chasing a few leaks. The reverse switch on the gearbox appeared to be leaking, the manual timing chain adjuster was leaking (oil running up the threads under pressure) and the back of the rocker cover on the exhaust side.
Spent a bit of time sorting these and i ran it up to temp in the garage and all was well, after going out for a drive last night there are still a couple of small leaks but vastly reduced! People keep telling me if a 70's car doesn't leak then its got no oil in it but i still dont like any leaks
Sump plug when i changed the oil, probably about a third of the fine metal sludge that it had on when i refreshed the bedding in oil around 250 miles:

Rocker cover gasket sorting, still all like new as youd expect. It's nice to pour the new oil over everything too rather than through the pour hole in the rocker cover:

I had a run down to my mates garage to see a couple of them whilst they were stopped back and took one of them out, he was impressed with the car and seemed as happy as me to experience it running at last! He's been a massive help on this journey anyway so there's probably some form of relief in that happiness too

On the drive back i stopped just outside the village on the top of the moor road with the start of sunset providing some nice lighting. I really need to get some proper shots done by the missus with her being a photographer, i cant get the phone to do the car much justice!

Going to try and get some more miles plowed on over the weekend if the weather behaves itself, ill try and get a couple of videos too, the noise is infectious now im starting to use more throttle and revs!
Thanks for reading,
Scott

Got a couple or short sound clips last night, uploaded to YT:

Nice uphill section to get it under load and bring the noise out!
Thanks,

Looks really good. Incidentally was watching the car SOS on the 2002 turbo the other night .. amazing cars and very rare.
Cheers Jonny, did you catch the post above on the video too? Getting a little too addicted to the noise! Its a great episode of Car SOS, crazy value on the turbos, probably 2-3 times mine! I always wonder if he kept it once restored too.

That gearshift does look very very long though! Any plans to shorten it up at all?

Sounds great Scott. Loving the 'long' shifts from the gear lever
Cheers Justin! I've never realised how long the throw looks until now!shalmaneser said:

Thanks, im happy how it goes considering the map isnt finished, cant wait until it is!That gearshift does look very very long though! Any plans to shorten it up at all?
And, erm, that is with a shorter shift
If i didnt have the 100+mm extension on the distance is quite short, its just really exaggerated with the extension on but it's nice to have it next to the steering wheel.
I drove a normal shift pattern car the other day with a normal height gear lever and it was very strange! I kept trying to set off in 2nd and it felt like i had to over reach for the stick haha

I was wondering that too .. but good on him to run it as a family car for all those years. Its a great episode of Car SOS, crazy value on the turbos, probably 2-3 times mine! I always wonder if he kept it once restored too.

Yep, really is a great effort!Just a general update, I spent a lot of seat time in the car this weekend, starting off Friday night by going out with the missus, some 80 mile round trip, stopped off a couple of times to enjoy the scenery and what not:

Took it pretty easy with the missus in, she loves the car which is a massive bonus! She complemented it on how comfortable and not bumpy it seems too. It's rough but certainly not harsh, it feels very compliant and the seats add to this comfort too. Long distance trips shouldnt be too much of a bother!
Saturday morning i was due in at the competition engine builders i help out at so took the 2002, a 32 mile trip each way. After i'd finished i started off the 32 mile journey home and before i knew it i'd done 168 miles I'd decided to head north on the A1 to see what it was like doing a variety of miles on the hottest day of the year.
This was mainly only to reach a nice 28 mile section of road i really wanted to hit, basically from a place called Haydon Bridge, then down to Melmerby. I normally drive from my house to Alston to hit the road down to Melmerby from there, then turn around and come back up but ill definitely be doing the full thing a lot more from now on!

At Hartside Cafe, which was sadly burned down last year. It still remains a stop off point for petrolheads, normally some interesting vehicles up there or around that area!

I didn't get too many pics, i ended up just driving and driving. The car coped great and really is awesome on the twisties and never once went over 90 degrees coolant or oil unless i stopped moving. The handling was shocking (in a good way) and it's got plenty on tap to overtake with ease, even on this base map. A few cars i got passed came by later down the road when i'd pulled over and they were grinning and giving me the thumbs up and/ or waving which was nice! Was half expecting other gestures!
I stopped off for fuel in Alston and it got quite a bit of attention in there too. A young kid even filmed me leaving after saying 'nice car mate' when i walked in to pay, which was all very nice and pleasant when there was much more exotic newer stuff parked up at the same time!
By the time i got home i really was a sweaty mess though, it gets hard work on the twisties but very rewarding to drive at the same time and if thats the worst result on a very hot day then im alright about it!
Fly collection when i got home:

Thanks for reading as always, few bits to sort in the short term but happy just piling on the miles for now. Will hopefully get it booked in for its final map in the coming months!

You passed me in this on the A69 near Bardon Mill on Sunday heading towards Carlisle.
It looks exceptional on the move, really really lovely to see it.
Awesome, thanks and i'm glad you liked it. Its nice to be getting spotted! Were you heading in the other direction? It looks exceptional on the move, really really lovely to see it.
I was probably just about to turn off at Haydon Bridge to head down to Penrith, im completely obsessed with the a686 at the moment although half of the down section from Hartside summit to Melmerby has been stone chipped
I got it just before prices started going silly, bearing in mind it's a genuine Tii and had some tasty bits with it (even if it all needed refreshing etc) and paid £12.5k from memory.
Then I've gone silly with it and probably spent 1.5 times that again as a rough guess, man maths has made it workable and insurance agreed value is a large chunk more than the outlay.
All in all I think it's a bargain
