Cheers all, im glad it's still providing some reading material!

The car has been pressed into daily duties the last couple of weeks, the sun has been relentless and not a drop of rain until today so its been great using it.

A commute into the office a couple of days a week has strangely been quite fun, even though the engine has rarely seen over 3k rpm laugh its nice to know it can sit in traffic in 25-30 degree heat no problem too.

Pride of place in works carpark, stark contrast next to my colleagues newly delivered EV Mercedes! A nice thing inside and charging points at work, im starting to see the appeal if the funds are available for one.

I had some free time on friday after work so caught up with some friends and then went for a drive out, knowing the missus and the little one were staying out. Back up to ye ol' faithful (Hartside Pass). The sunsets are incredible up there and many enthusiasts also seemed to have the same idea, an old mustang was up there and a plethora of new age hot hatches and motorbikes.

There was that weird dusk light on the drive home, the candle light headlights add to the experience but i think i might look to upgrade to some more modern type units for next year. They dont tend to pick up small animals and such like and that can be an issue!

Being a bachelor for the night, the petrol station on the way home provided a late tea!

A bugs life on the front of the car, the sign of a good summers drive out!

The next day after work in the morning i headed back up with a couple of new friends, the 2002 retired for a rest, the exhaust seems to have pushed itself back a tad and is catching on the valance.

The Yaris was pace car for the afternoon instead, it really is one of the best tools for these types of roads but on the smoother flatter sections it was mind boggling having the 918 fly up behind you so quickly laugh

Theres still a good few weeks left of use im sure so i'll sort the exhaust and get back out in it shortly!

I must stop reading your updates, every single time you post a story/pics from Hartside Pass it makes me regret building the A35 in to a circuit car furious Would love to take it out in to the Dales but have a feeling i'd either end up weaving like I was pissed to avoid every pothole, or snapping a wishbone within 5 miles owing to the state of the roads around here...

Aside from the exhaust issue glad she's not giving you any further headaches! I can imagine having that 918 chasing you must have been a bit surreal given the pace difference hehe Any plans to do a UK trackday this year, or do you mostly save the old girl for the roads/Ring trips?

I've learned from friends that have dedicated track/ race cars that were once fast road cars, that it is not what i wanted to do laugh i'm about the least competitive man, i dont enjoy competition and it takes the fun out of it for me.

I did intend to do track days but i've found my enjoyment comes from these 7/10ths drives out in the hills so its just never happened. There's a bmw car club gb one at croft next month i was eager to do but im finding it difficult to spend the £240 when that equates to 5-6 loops out in the hills, even before taking into account fuel costs etc. on the track day.

You should try a few dales drives out once done, im sure it would be good fun on the smoother sections but you'll have to take it really easy on the bits that arent laugh

The 918 is incredible, i think on a fast circuit it would be really mind boggling! On a bumpy lumpy section in the North Pennines, the Yaris is the right tool. I think if the 918 kept pace over the bumpy bits, it would cause rather a costly amount of damage vomit

I'd seen that too, following that build. Luckily for me there's nothing hot down that side!

You are right about petrol, it really is nasty stuff but then also glorious at the same time!

Addictive is a good word for this car, thats how i've found it to be and its so so far under my skin!

Small update time and only one minor issue since the last update, the exhaust had pushed back and was catching the valance, it was also twisting itself under hard driving. I could only assume the clamp had come a bit loose to allow this but when i stuck my head under the car, the two rubbers holding the backbox were rather stretched and perished. These were new only a few years ago too! These had been allowing play in the exhaust and it had worked its way out a bit by loosening the clamp off.

I ordered up some new genuine ones, which when they arrived it became obvious that the previous ones weren't genuine. These ones are pretty solid and have a robust material within them too. I had to warm them up in boiling water for some time to allow enough play to fit them whereas the previous ones came off in seconds by hand!

I took my other halfs camera out with me, i've no idea what im doing but under guidance took a couple of pictures in dusk. She touched them up for me afterwards. I love it up here during dusk or dawn.

I'd like to get more into the photography side of things, it's something i'd love to be able to do to an 'okay' standard. It really isnt easy though, big respect for the people who do it and make it look like it is easy! So, i'll see how that goes (and also see how long it is before the other half gets sick of me asking to use her camera/ expertise! laugh). Expect the majority to be on the phone still!

On another note, I had a message from a friend on Instagram, who lives in South Wales, some 5 hours South of me (and funnily enough near to where i picked my car up from originally!). He is doing a road trip around Scotland this week and had asked if i was anywhere near his route up. With him coming up the West via the m6, my favorite road is only 30 minutes or so detour. Any excuse for a blast out!

20220829_145955 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

We met at the top of Hartside Pass, gave him a run down in mine and then he insisted i had a drive of his! I dont really like driving other peoples cars anything more than 'brisk' but it was nice to get to drive another. His is vastly different to mine, it has a Honda s2000 engine and gearbox, e30 rear beam/ diff, rack and pinion steering with variable electric assistance etc.

20220829_151521 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

It was mad jumping from one into the other. Joe's has a more usable day to day interior, he uses it a lot and his other half and daughter jump in with him and coupled with the modern drive train i can see why. It was odd being sat in a 2002 but it being quiet and refined with a slick modern gear change etc. laugh cool experience and thankful for it!

20220829_150055 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

There was a photographer on the pass getting pictures of cars/ bikes. A couple of bikers gave him the heads up we were coming down as a pair and he would get some photos. It's very clear round a whole series of slow bends where he was situated so we managed to get some side by side shots. Ill post those up when they get uploaded!

This trip out was also the final straw for the classic BMW Motorsport badges. I think i'm up to double figures of people asking me if i've fitted 'those new bmw 'M' badges from the new m3'. It makes me dislike modern BMW's for putting these on new cars as an option for the 50th anniversary of bmw motorsport. I had these badges done at quite a cost and i just cant take it any more laugh standard ones going back on ASAP!

Nice one Scott, glad to see the old girl still looking immaculate underneath despite as you say getting 'used properly' this year!

Can sympathise re: the dawn/dusk drives, love being up on Blakey Ridge just after dawn, no one about you and you can see for that far you almost feel as though you're on top of the world hehe

Sorry to hear about the non-aficionados not recognising the heritage of the Motorsport roundel, I guess it's what happens when a manufacturer forsakes their heritage and starts having to 'polish' the turds they now make by misappropriating their heritage... Can honestly say I don't think there's a BMW/M car from the past 10 years i'm bothered about, totally abandoned their core brand values and just churning out the same homogenised crap as everyone else. Still, if that's what people want! rolleyes

Just glad there are still examples of proper BMWs like yours to illustrate how great they were cool

Please stop posting images and doing these write ups, because every time you do, I'm forced to go to the specialist classifieds to see how much a straight, tidy, solid 2002 will cost me ... and I'm pretty sure that would just be the thin end of a very expensive and time consuming wedge eek

I can never make my mind up on fully yellow tinted lenses but i've got yellow glass lamp covers over the H4's and really like the yellow tinge in the reflectors and light colour they give. A nice halfway house haha

Im afraid not, he documents everything on instagram pretty much, if you are that way inclined, madda_joe is his IG!

It should clean up alright but whoever did the subframe and trailing arms for one of the old owners hasnt done a great job, will need doing in the coming years to keep them tip top. I'll use it as an opportunity to add some strengthening to the front subframe too.

Thanks for the kind words, i've swapped the badges over now and discovered i do like the original ones better afterall laugh

Can't imagine anyone ever getting fed up with a car like this, it has everything about it. As posted above, I don't ever look twice at recent models as they are the same as many other manufacturers cars of today, there's not much about them and they cost plenty

Not meaning to upset your friend in any way, the car would look so much better without the red and blue, it doesn't need other colours, the shape/styling of the 2002's is priceless

That's the original colour scheme for the 2002 turbo, so it's replicating a factory look.

Yes correct, a genuine Turbo example below for example (other than the Alpina wheels)

BMW-2002-Turbo-10a-1024x555 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

The colours are effectively the motorsport colours, which 'M' still use to this day, also the colours used on the classic motorsport badges i've taken off, as my last paragraph on my last post laugh

I too am not keen on the graphics, i understand their importance on an original turbo but otherwise they arent for me.

Joe and I went halves on a driving photo from our meeting last Monday. Nice to get them both together of course and not an occurrence that will be likely to happen all too often given our distance from each other!

  • Note we were going about 5mph here and visibility is great right around the next few series of bends, there was 0 risk here!
As i mentioned, the motorsport badges are off and back onto the originals. I do actually like it better but my tastes change all the time!

I wanted the motorsport theme somewhere so kept it on the center caps. I got some greyscale foil logos for the mahle center caps, which is what some of them would've come with:

Please excuse the flies and general road grime laughlaughlaugh

Whilst the weather is still doing okay, i went to a local-ish meet at Beamish Car Barn, they seem to market and sell some nice classic and/ or specialist cars. I didnt go with anyone but just fancied a look up and a walk around their show room.

As soon as a got there, fellow PH'er Andy (Bomb) came over. We had a chance meeting at a petrol station a couple of years back and hes since been treating himself to this glorious machine:

Inside there were some lovely cars. This being one of the more affordable ones:

20220901_185255 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

20220901_185331 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

I'd be lying if i said the thought of trading the GR Yaris off for this didnt cross my mind, awesome waft mobile and an Alpina car has always been an itch of mine. If the B3s touring sat next to it was similar money then i think i would but it was another 30k ontop, not a car for a man of my means! I always get the itch for a wafty fast auto whilst i commute in the Yaris but all of that goes out the window when the road clears and there's a set of bends up ahead!

Not many plans for the 2002 over winter as it draws ever closer. There's a couple of minor oil leaks now, both engine and gearbox i believe but i think ill just persevere with those next year and perhaps remedy winter 2023, using it as an excuse for some added power and a proper strip/ rebuild on the box. So just a full fluid change of all fluids as per, a bolt check and a decent clean under, over and inside!

I normally have to factor in a set of tyres after a long spring/ summer of driving this but the A052's seem only about half worn! I'm very impressed, yes more expensive than the r888r's but they have excellent wet weather performance (just in case!) and dont look as 'in your face'. I think they will continue to be my tyre of choice.

Cheers,

Scott

The main driving season for the car is coming to a close, sadly! I've still been getting out plenty and the car has done really well this year in terms of mileage covered (80% at pace!) and also reliability, it's been a joy and 2022 will be a memorable year in this car.

I've been exploring the North Pennines more and also into South Northumberland and have found some great sections, although one section of a new road i found did cause me to have another splitter incident laugh it was hanging on by a thread and is now secured a tad more via more cable ties!

Some random shots over the last few weeks since the previous update:

I've ended up leading a few small group drives out as well recently, i usually like to go out alone like the anti social so and so i am but these drives with like minded people are great.

Great array of cars on this one:

IMG-20221008-WA0017(1) by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

Another more recent drive out that a friend organised had me leading for a good portion too. A friend of his from Japan was coming over and touring the UK, he builds some cool Japanese cars (Racing Factory Yamamoto) and most of the group was Japanese cars, i could've taken the Yaris but it turns out in his younger years he had a 2002, so i had to take the 2002!

I took him down Hartside pass and back up at a fairly decent pace, he seemed to really enjoy it and when he got out he gave a big thumbs up and said "Really good Touge!", which i found out that Touge in Japan is the name for a mountain pass road! He was also over the moon i had Yokohama tyres on the car biggrin

My friend who organised it got this picture afterwards, which he's just uploaded, so well timed!

Another friend also popped by in one of his recent additions, a BMW M2cs, some keen eyed readers may recognise this car as it belonged to Chris Harris!

With these cars being of the same family, just some 48 years apart, it was good to get them together for some pictures too:

My friend was also kind enough to throw me the keys for a quick run up and down this section of road. It's got some Bilstein coilovers on it that link in with the adaptive system, its also got the optional ceramic brakes and a full titanium Akrapovic exhaust. It was pretty mind blowing how fast yet settled it was, the initial turn in felt crazy, its so sharp. Really, really good!

20221016_152641 by Scott Osborne, on Flickr

On the flip side, it reminded me why i have my 2002. The M2cs was so good that it made you feel like you were going a lot slower than you were, i was quite alarmed at one point when i noticed the traction light flicker over an undulation and looked down at the speed...

The 2002 is almost the opposite with its sense of speed, 60 feels like 90 in a modern car and so on. I dont think i'd have my license long with something like that on these roads, id be going too fast, too often! If i had the means though... laugh

Awesome pics there Scott, and the green M2CS looks great - always liked that combo of green with the gold wheels when Harris got it wrapped cool

Appreciate what you say re: the M2 though. I've fancied a manual M2 Comp for a couple of years now, but they're that capable that the driver just feels isolated and superfluous at road speeds, and really need to be doing 60mph+ to start feeling the chassis work. Then there's the joy of trying to find a manual - seemingly whenever I searched using a 'Manual' transmission filter it would only bring up bloody 2 pedal cars! Oh well, put me off getting one at least rofl

Will you be carrying out any mods or restorative works over the Winter lay up?

Thanks, Ill pass the compliments onto the photographer, he did a cracking job and turned them around in a few hours!

I'd always assumed id want a DCT one, as it would be a daily but having driven this manual cs, i think its worth living with the manual day to day to enjoy it properly on runs out. Similar to my situation with the little Yaris but the Yaris is so cheap to run in comparison and is a better car for these drives out generally (i use it when its wet most of the time which makes it make even more sense, otherwise i take the 2002). As always, i'd love one alongside whatever i already have but sadly my means mean its a one in, one out policy!

No plans as such, just general clean/ check over inside, outside and underneath. Anything needing attention due to wear or damage will get done and full fluids swap. It does have the odd minor oil leak at the minute but the source seems to be a bit of a pain to find without taking lots off. I seem to have far too much month left at the end of the money at the moment otherwise i might've used the leaks as an excuse to go to the next engine phase laugh
