Fantastic.
I've followed this through its various stages. So pleased to see you have it how you want it. It looks exceptional. Will keep my eye out for it around South Wales!

Thats great news!

I'm assuming the roll back didn't reintroduce the CAN issues?

Great news! Well done!

That firmware update issue must be confusing. You've got a pretty bespoke build going on with a thousand variables and then they throw a spanner in!

Thanks guys.

The firmware update problem was a head scratcher. It didn't even enter my mind as a possibility until a mate suggested it.

I put the newer version of the firmware on it this evening and it still had the misfire. I sent an event log, data log and my configuration to Baldur who's the ECU guru. He had made changes to how the ignition scheduling code worked and found an issue on these two ignition outputs that was causing the dwell time to be be wrong. He fixed it and sent me an updated firmware about an hour later, his tech support is fantastic. It's perfect now, no misfire and all the CANbus is working. It sounds strange but not having warning lights on the dash makes a big difference, it's the final piece of the puzzle as far as the engine swap goes.

I still need to set-up the compression and re-bound on the coilovers, adjust the PID for the boost control so it's running what it was mapped for and then also tune it for water/meth injection. I going to bide my time for all that and wait for the weather to improve.

No project like this is ever finished!

OP - what management are you using on this setup?

Time to enjoy this one! I'm sure they'll be updates as I inevitably break stuff on it. I do plan to make some videos and also get a YouTuber to do one on it.

There's a few more things to do, some bodywork and some suspension stuff but there are no more plans to modify after that.

I do wonder if I might miss the research and building of it phase. I do enjoy that.

Your right, always likely to be something. I'm using an LPC8 from Baldur's Control Systems. https://controls.is/shop/

Really happy with my purchase, Baldur is on Facebook messenger, I can get hold of him any time. I initially went with it as it offered all the stuff I wanted, on-board wideband, DBW control, enough inputs and outputs but he also had the 986 canbus sorted out on it. Any questions are answered straight away and he's offered me loads of advice with regards to wiring, control strategies, trouble shooting, etc. I found the ECU side of it the biggest leap in this build. If you wire up a standalone, you need to know what everything does, how it works and how it's controlled.

For anyone that wants to DIY a standalone, it's a brilliant option for the tech support as much as anything else. Nothing worse than installing something complicated like an ecu and something doesn't work and your on your own. I wouldn't have got it to where it is now without his help. Especially with the CANbus, I worked out I needed to send a CANbus sequence to get my ABS light off, the ECU didn't have that functionality so he added it for me.

I've also wired up my friends Audi S8 V8 Boxster with an LPC8, that's on the dyno next week, I'll get a video of it.

Congrats OP - amazing result after the 986 catastrophe.

Looking forward to the videos (and of your mate's S8 V8!)

That needs a build thread on here! I've seen LS-series V8s dropped into Boxsters, but not an Audi unit.

Interesting thanks. I've been toying with going standalone on my 996 in preparation for a ITB conversion.

Baldur's ECUs look impressive. Particularly so with the diesel ones, very very rare to find anyone willing to sort out an aftermarket controller. Next one, V8 4.2 CDi Mercedes in the back of your 987... biggrin

The diesel controllers are his most popular product, like you say, it's not something typically catered for in the aftermarket.

I would like to put an Audi 4.2 TDI into a Bentley Continental. Probably sacrilege but it makes sense to me, it would be a lovely posh daily but would return 30mpg rather than 13mpg. With both cars side by side I don't think it would be that difficult. I've not got the money to look into it seriously.

Would love to be a fly on the wall if you do take it to Porsche for the key.

They'll be wondering what the fk is in front of them!

It's been done with a 3.0 V6 TDI I think, saw it somewhere. Take one Bentley with a dead engine, take one Phaeton or A8, lob it all in, rinse, repeat biggrin

Edit: Found it.
