The originals will be the bigger facelift ones.
They are indeed. Will swap them over at some point, probably when the wheels are refurbished smile

Looks great. Currently have a petrol six pot f10 which is sat in a garage 5 days a week depreciating and not needing any tinkering.

I keep coming back to e39 m5 as a toy and family weekend car.

Look forward to hearing how you get in with yours. Looks great BTW.

The other upgrade worth doing - and the only one I have made to mine is to plug in an Intravee (google it) to change what you can do with the audio - that and an ipod in the boot allows you to control the ipod from the head unit...

my car connected by bluetooth to my iphone 7 without issue (though the bluetooth module may have been updated in the past)...

other upgrade worth considering is front brakes - as they are a weakness on this car - mine as the AP Racing 6 pots on it - expensive but very good...

Thanks for the tips. It actually has a nice aftermarket stereo - some sort of Android thingy I'm still getting to grips with, but more importantly it looks completely stock to the uninitiated and fits in really well with the interior.

I may well think about the brakes - will see how I get on with them. Somebody commented earlier about driving with mechanical sympathy, and I actually drive pretty gently 95% of the time. Hopefully it'll stand me in good stead hehe

It is an easy car to drive gently and smoothly - it is a difficult technical car to drive well and hard / at pace - the weight balance when you get it right makes it awesome, when you get it wrong it becomes very lumpy very quickly! The brakes are fine - until you have a driving day and then the standard front brakes will fade... and after all it is an M5, no point having it if you don't find a suitable opportunity to exploit its capabilities!

I'd suggest a swap to a better quality fluid and Hawk pads from Cambridge Motorsport. They a vast improvement over stock and not silly money.

You might snag a bargain here though. wink

I've had two E39 M5s, they're wonderful cars and I don't think there's much out there that's better as an overall package. Yours looks great and my example on 135k was in much better condition than my previous one on 100k. As someone else mentioned, you should probably do the shells if they haven't been done already.

Love an E39 M5 so much, and as others have mentioned I think you've a list there!

E39source on YT is a good place to go to for DIYs on these things.

Excuse the slight aside but were there any alternative seat types available in the e39 M5?

Yeah your could order the comfort ones iirc. (they had the split back like the contour but a flatter base)
I have the comfort seats in mine, together with the massage function. The rear headrests on the comfort-fitted cars are also different, to match those in the front.

Good choice !

Lol ... if you've taken many brave pills, I must have had a truck load.

I bought this a few weeks back... green on green

It's currently in having the following -

Wheel refurb
New tyres
Diff oil change
Gearbox mounts
New pads and discs
New brake lines
ALL bushes replaced
Power steering leak investigated
Jacking point rebuilt properly (MOT bodge by previous owner)
Suspension refresh.

Then I'll start with the DIY activities...

Clean up the lights
Replace some of the window switches
Upgrade the stereo software ( who knew!? )
Get the retro phone working ( I love that it has this!! )
collect LOTS of shell points !!

interesting mix of facelift lights, and a non-facelift grill (all m5's came with the facelift grill)
No they didn't. Only facelift M5's came with a facelift grill.

Looks a nice car OP. Have you have the jacking points checked out? Any rattles on start up?

I sold my M5 a few months ago and replaced it with an E55 AMG. I do miss the M5 a little bit, but it does feel a bit old fashioned when driving my E55. Plus the supercharger makes up for a lot of that!

Enjoy the car!

That is just awesome. Before I got mine I looked at a fully refurbed and re-painted individual Tannengrün with Englishgrün full heritage nappa leather. The combination was just spectaculary cool. Sadly he wanted too much money, so I got my Imola instead.

Angrydog: Are you sure about the grills? I read somewhere that all M5's regardless of year had the bigger grills, not the flush one. It matters very little however, I like the look of the flush one on OP's car.
