It's not the best picture TBH; but yes, for me they're far too dark...

Ferric grey would suit the car colour much better IMO; but what about being completely different and going for a bright silver, maybe with a sparkle lacquer finish?

Sadly, yes. And forget the ‘Ferric Grey’ blah, blah. You’ve just spent a few quid getting it back into shape, shadow chrome in the correct shade is the only way.

Must be shadow chrome, particularly on the Silverstone Blue.

Another pic in slightly better light. It is shadow chrome... But looks to me like it's too light on the 'chrome' and too heavy on the 'shadow'.

Bums.

I'll have a chat to Platinum tomorrow, see what can be salvaged. To be fair, I asked for 'mid-dark' shadow chrome as I wanted to avoid a chintzy silver, but after getting it out in the sunlight it's clearly too dark. Shame really, as the finish is fantastic quality.

On the plus side, the body paint looks lovely and I've done the best part of 200 miles in two days just for fun. So it's nice to be out driving it again biggrin

They're nigh on gunmetal or heading towards black unfortunately...

I'm sure they'll be able to sort them for you

Why 'must' they?

Or is it a 'purist' thing?!

It's an opinion presented as a fact, in the spirit of powerfully built etc

IMO as a former owner it does not have to be shadow chrome but I think a metallic grey colour (lighter than black) looks good on the E39 M5.
Each to their own though, great car whatever the wheel colour.

Shadow chrome is an awkward one to get the right shade. When I had mine done they looked a little dark in some lights, but not as much as yours.

Isn't there a wheel specialist that everyone who wants the correct colour; sends their wheels too?

Remember it being mentioned a few times on the previous 5 forums; but they're dead in the water now, so can't find who that said company was

It's definitely too dark but at least isn't black.

Mine needs the alloys done (and the bootlid, front arches, fuel filler, strip above the rear bumper and jacking points frown) and as someone earlier mentioned I've been tempted by silver.
I'm sure I've seen pictures of that and they look good - it's a nice design of wheel and anything too dark hides them.

My pals M5 is Titansilber and he's gone with a bright silver / sparkle lacquer finish on his Style 65s and they look absolutely superb...

He should have it back from its rebuild in the next 3-4 weeks (full rebuild ground up, £12k in the engine alone)! Its only done 42k but it'd been sat for 5 years in a not very weather proof lean-to and it rusted badly on the rear valance, front jacking points and rear sill edges

The lad who did his wheels (somewhere in Germany as that's where he's based (UK E39, M5 though) did all 4 in different variations of shadow chrome and none of them 'wowed'; he re-did 2 in the Ferric Grey (55 and 58 i think they are) and they looked much better and then did one of the rears in bright silver with sparkle lacquer and that won... Just stand the details of the wheels out so much better

They are a bit dark, but look OK to me eye; much better than black.

I wanted shadow chrome on my 330i but the guy doing the wheels warned me off it because it was a pig to get right and match in the future.

Well, kudos to Platinum, they're going to redo them for me FOC. It'll be a couple of weeks before I can get them down there again and I'll have the faff of getting the wheels off again, but I can't really say fairer than that.
