Great looking car and nice that it's clearly getting well looked after and used.
If you're concerned re engine health you could have an engine oil analysis done and it'll give you a good idea of how things are.

Thank you It's just had a good old 40-50 mile drive today actually, running like a trooper - I clicked the link and that's much cheaper than expected! I'll genuinely give that a roll next oil change. If you're concerned re engine health you could have an engine oil analysis done and it'll give you a good idea of how things are.

Also, loving that new E46. I never managed to get to an M3, but I've had no less than 4 E46s over the years and I've got a right soft spot for them.

Couldn't help but notice - this looks very much like the passenger side of the car? (given the radiator pipes, and the orientation of the suspension arms) If so, your brake discs have been replaced, and the drivers (right) side is currently on the passenger (left) side, as the vanes are facing in the wrong direction..See the Porsche manual
They should face in such a direction as to throw the air outwards from the centre, not scoop it in. Check the drivers side too!

bgunn that's very well spotted, I'd never noticed that. Now you point it out, the direction of the drilled holes looks off too. It's in for an MOT shortly so I'll ask to get my disks swapped round - it'll have been like that since I bought it
No worries - reason I noticed is that I'd changed the discs on my car and was reminded of this when I bought the discs!Good reason to clean everything up and check the calipers over too, the little solid piece of brake pipe between the hose and the caliper frequently corrodes. Gorgeous car, btw..

What did you use to seal the wheelarches. Did you have to do any prep beforehand, apart from cleaning? Thanks
It was mostly just elbow grease and car shampoo really - plus some tar remover, there is so much tar! Then a bit of wire brush for any frilly bits. For the underseal I used Buzzweld WAR, the aerosol version. It is a dry finish and matte black, I think it looks tidy and it was definitely easy to use.
You won't be able to fit the shields without modification with the newer type coil packs that have longer mounting bolts - that's probably why they've been left off. I need to alter mine, but didn't have time when a coil pack failed and I fitted six new.
Interestingly, 986s don't have coil heat shields on them - likely because the silencers aren't adjacent to the cylinder heads as they are on a 996/997.

Interesting, bgunn what was yours like with the pack failing? At the moment mine curiously seems fine without Aircon on, but when you switch the Aircon on it has the occasional miss at higher idle. All revs above idle are fine!
Coil packs aren't too bad really, £36 each today on ECP with the obligatory discount and I'll try and do the spark plugs too. They'll probably have to wait though as sadly my daily is due a big old bill this coming week The 996 is on mild duties until then.

It ran on four - two failed at the same time. Loads of codes, flashing engine management light, and it ran like crap! Fortunately I was only 10 mins away from home and gently limped it back..Coil packs aren't too bad really, £36 each today on ECP with the obligatory discount and I'll try and do the spark plugs too. Look at the misfire counter on Durametric/PST/PIWIS.. That said, if the coil packs are original, they'll be starting to fail. Mine ran smoother than it ever did, even when the original coils were working, so the spark must have been weakening.
Some more work on the car over the bank holiday weekend, and many happy miles too in that glorious weather (that's now promptly disappeared of course!)
I'm really crap at getting pictures midway through work, but the old girls had the following...
New aux belt
New door panel clips (they were all worse for wear!)
Front brake disks reinstalled the correct way round
While mucking about with the brakes we noticed the hard lines into the calipers were looking past their best, so I think the plans a new set and some braided lines I'm also waiting on a set of engine mounts to finally come into stock and then they'll get done too!
One thing to note, my temperatures got bloody hot on Saturday in traffic until I turned the Aircon on which forces the front fans on. I think theres a relay that controls the low speed on/off for the fans which fails on these fairly often, which might need investigation (or bypassing...)
