She looks really great in that colour. I am not sure I love the idea of using a trolley jack on a gravel driveway! Doesn't the trolley like to move forward a bit as the car raises up and the pad moves back?

Keep up the good work and enjoy her.

I agree, its far from ideal! Part of me wants to pave it, purely for working on things - also if you've ever dropped a small tool/bolt on a gravel driveway you'll know my pain.

In much happier news, I'm taking the car to the Nurburgring at the end of this month smile I'm taking my other half who is now insured to help the drive, and going in convoy with 3 other cars! I've not been for a few years so I'm excited and nervous in equal measures - watch this space for the potential drama, but hopefully mostly happy driving.

That will be an excellent trip I am sure! I have never been myself, but it has to be done at some point.

All the best

That shot/angle catches the fine lines of the 996 very well.

....it has just broken down, in a bit of a scary way. A brake line burst somewhere halfway down the length of the car, while doing some heavy braking! AA towed it to the garage for me.

Yes that is scary. Mine had all new hard lines because I was told they looked old. Do you know when yours were last changed?

It wasn't my favourite thing, I was barreling up behind a friend's car and almost went into him too! The good old AA were there in 20 minutes and towed it to a local garage, hopefully it's not the over the gearbox one.

They looked alright to be honest!

Don't bother with the OE replacements, they'll only go again (and cost you an arm and a leg)...

So I've got the quote back - one of the front to back hard lines had indeed ruptured. The other line is currently looking crusty, so I think I'm going to just get them both replaced entirely - especially with the Nurburgring so close. £420 for the job, as one of the brake lines goes over the gearbox so there's a fair labour bill.

I think that's not bad because I'm sure I paid more. I'd be curious why these were not spotted or pointed out to you by your chosen service place or indi.

Yeah I was rather Impressed! It was done by a local place I've not used before and they turned it around in about 24 hours from me giving them the thumbs up.

Pleased to announce that the car stops again, and that this didn't happen on the first corner of the 'ring!!

Successful Nurburgring trip! No engine explosions, no mating with any barriers - just lots of fun with a few mates and my other half smile the only minor malady was a bit more undertray falling off on the autobahn at speed haha!

Loved the whole thing, and it's bonded me with the car further. I need a diet though, the Germanic diet of meat/cheese/wheat beer is delicious but I can't get away with it anymore.

Underwhelming update time - I put it on a Dyno to see if we were anywhere near the stock power figure anymore... we're not really.

I went down with some friends in their cars to Surrey rolling road for a bit of a laugh, it was a fun way to start the weekend and an excuse for a drive after though smile Having looked on the web, most cars do around 270-285hp.

Mine went on the rollers and at first did 240hp, which caused some worry. Then he did a second run and it put out a nice normal 275hp! Then a third run - back to 240hp. The verdict is an intermittent VarioCam (variable valve timing) solenoid, causing the car to not always get the 5.5k rpm lift. You can see this on the Dyno printout below - one line goes up, the other goes down... I'm happy with the power when it's working though, a video on YouTube shows one making exactly that, with 60k on the clock if I recall.

Not the end of the world then, I've emailed my trusted specialist and I'll try and get in over to him next month and bundle in a service at the same time. He's hoping the solenoid will make itself known with an error code, if that's not the case then it'll be down to manual diagnosis. The other thing is my clutch pedal didn't return during a recent drive, but only the once? The fluid was rebled but it since happened again, just once. I'm assuming I've got a leak?

On a happier note, we found an empty stretch of road for pictures and a few drag races which was thoroughly enjoyable.

Hey ho, 21 year old car ownership. I love the car still, and I knew it would come with inevitable snags.
Thanks for sharing, really good to know. Guessing a bit of cylinder wear but otherwise good.

Car looks fantastic.

Not a problem! It also transpires the issue was coil pack degradation for the power dip, not the variocam. This was resolved by just replacing them, which I did a month or two ago.
