Knew I recognised the car! It's in my work car park once a week or so. Looks lovely in the metal, really clean smile
Ah no way! Asmec in Arlington business park? I've brought it in today actually. I'm normally in the grey E92 with a hole in the front grill laugh

Seems like an idea to keep an eye on it, but I'm glad its generally solid - better than some of my past BMWs! Its got a little bit of rust on one of the door latches which is getting done in the near future.

...still haven't bought a replacement key though haha!

Latest update with the car as of Friday evening -

As you can see, all the coolant is falling out of my cars bum! General consensus from the 996 group on FB is the pump.

Thats a positive sign diagnosis wise at least then! Weirdly it didn't leak when I started it briefly from cold on Saturday morning (all of 20 seconds), but when I turned the engine off it all started leaking out again.

A new pumps on order and the plan is to try and tackle it Sunday!

Pump is an easy swap. Do the belt whilst you are there as you have to take the old one off anyway and they're cheap!

Don't run it if the bearing is failing as the next stage is that the impellor falls apart from hitting the block. No real be aware of points for this job although it's good to check all the rollers are free of play/noise and that the alternator and PAS pump bearings feel okay. If the idler roller has play don't buy a new one, just buy the bearing for about £4 and have a friendly engineering shop swap them if you don't have a press.
Useful information as usual mate - I didn't realise the bearings could be swapped out. ECP want roughly £100 for any of the idler rollers too so that could save quite a few pennies...

I'm a novice to this, how would I go about sourcing the right bearings? Or would the engineering shop be the sort of place to know?

Well the waterpump is out, which was a ballache on the driveway under a gazebo - but its bloody out! The thermostat followed, and promptly left half a bolt in the block and stopped play (bottom right) -

So a nice chap is arriving at my house Thursday morning and taking it out, hopefully. £70 for that and I'll clean up all the muck and it can start being put back together, right old palava.

Some sexy M96 engine block porn for you all laugh

As of Saturday, its repaired and back on the road. New low temperature thermostat fitted too, so the needle sits just below the 80 degrees mark on the gauge. All in, I think the repair cost me about £300 DIY'ing it, inclusive of the bolt removal guy - so not terrible, but next time I'm just shipping it to a garage I think!

Cracking car OP. I plan on having a 911 once I grow up a bit and sell the M3. The interior on yours look stunning given the age and mileage.

Nice to see it being run through the winter too! I run my M3 all year round and keeping the underside clean (or as clean as realistically possible) can be a bit of a ball ache but still worth the effort.

Will you be taking it on track this year?
Yes indeed, its going to be pressed into commuting duties tomorrow to give it a good long run!

That's certainly the plan, I would have liked to take it to Bedford in February with a few friends but its not the right month money wise! I'm hoping sometime in April/May something will crop up and I can take it out. Then knowing my luck something else will go pop and it'll be on axle stands on the driveway again!

Minor update, I seem to be slowly loosing coolant somewhere - the pump/stat seemed like obvious candidates given my recent work but they're (seemingly) dry. Bit of research points at the coolant cap, the part numbers ending in '.00' or '.01' being superseded and usually worth changing as a starting point. Mines a '.01', so I'm guessing its been replaced at some point! I've ordered up the latest '.04' version today, I'll fit that and keep an eye.

In the meantime, its running fine - the low temp stat holds the temperature gauge just a smidgen below 80 degrees.

Yeah I've considered that, I might have a look after the drive home from work today - I assume I should see a bit of visible steam? It looks like its a bit of a PITA to change the tank surprisingly! Its quite a long tank and there are a few hoses running over the top of it.

No steam (although it was in summer)... in fact my local indie used an endoscope to check. One of those irritating jobs where the part is relatively cheap compared to the work involved...
Yeah I've just had a look while idling and hot and can't see anything obvious! No coolant smells anywhere either really - I'll try the cap then go for the tank as the next step if that fails.

Booked onto a little mini track session at Castle Combe in April at their action day, and I'll be at one of the stands parked up. Anyone else heading along?

Minor update, I got bored and had a tinker with the adjustable spoiler! Very easy to do, and I've put it up to the top position - I'm not sure if I like it yet...it may end up back as it was. Also much fun had in the snow, between it and the BMW the Porsche was better due to the LSD and extra weight over the rear wheels - Neither of them got stuck though!

Apprehensively excited about the little track session next month too. Common wisdom says the engine will implode right before it pendulum swings me off track haha!

I love that. Do they do that adjustable section in carbon fibre? I'd like a slightly larger set of alloys (in anthracite) too.
I've never seen anyone offer up an aftermarket version, but they may well be out there as its the same wing as the GT3 version I believe. If I was going to change I'd really like it on a set of nice dishy BBS LM's! But to be honest I seem to like 99% of cars on LM's...

Edit, as below -

I really quite like the cargraphics spoiler - I tried finding a price but I don't think their site enjoys a mobile browser.

Also Fast Bug, that looks so good covered in muck! Cars look so purposeful when they're all dirtied from the road. I missed out on that meet on Portsdown hill in the end, did it happen?

Yes Portsdown Hill happened, also had another one over Salisbury way and I had to cancel this months one because of the weather. Next one is 20th of May at Brooklands, you can do the hillclimb at that one if you're feeling brave biggrin
Next one for me is Combe on the 7th April - not fancy a visit? I think its £12 a ticket in advance, or £20 on the gate. You can watch me spin onto the grass (kidding hopefully). The hillclimb sounds fun too - is it a buy tickets online job or do folks turn up?

A few of us will be going to Bedford on Monday 4th June (Javelin) if you fancy it. 2 x 996 C2 confirmed so far, possibly one more.
That's really tempting actually, I've never been but I've heard Bedfords a good track for a bit of learning as there's a lot of run off.

I'd love to go, sadly April is birthday month in our house (mine and both kids) and the 7th is the day of my 40th party, I wouldn't be popular if I wasn't around for it laugh

There's a thread about the Brooklands meet on 911UK if you're on there? I've arranged for parking in a group inside Brooklands itself, but you'd need to be there before 9.30 for that. From memory it's £14.50, and that includes entry to the museum and breakfast biggrin
Ah I do read it but I'm not a member yet, its on the list to sign up anyway. I'll get on it on my lunch break later today, I'd like to come along to that!

Theres finally been the perfect storm of no terrible weather or things to have to do over the weekend - which means car activities!

So today was the satisfying job of taking the front bumper off and removing all the trapped debris in the radiators, a job that everyone with a 996 should probably do at least once a year. I also cleaned out the front arches and insides of the front wheels while I was at it - hopefully tomorrow I can attack the rears again. Bit of a detailing post, apologies if its a bit boring!

Wheels off -

Bumper off -

The black radiator is the air condensor for the air conditioning - this unclips and unveiled lots of dirt trapped between the two, on both sides of the car.

Cleaned it all up, including everything behind the bumper - then buttoned it all back up. Not the most exciting update, but definitely some important maintainance.

Also, quick wipe of the wheel barrels -

Before -

And after -

Very satisfying work really, at least for me! The next update should be around the track bits on Castle Combe, fingers crossed on that one tongue out

I did the same back in October and found a tonne of mud, I imagine its filled itself back up again already - I wonder if it just hinders things in reality having that guard in?
