I used pirtek to knock up a ps line for my e36 m3. Worked very well and much cheaper than the bmw part. If my ps line ever goes ill be using them for sure.
They've estimated about £150 to make the part, vs nearly £600 for the same thing from Porsche. Definitely keeping them in mind from now on - funnily enough a mate had suggested them off of the back of something being made up for an E46 M3.

Just wanted to say thank you OP, as I really love the 90's 911's, and I have really enjoyed reading the thread.
Maybe one day I will own one, fingers crossed.

Thank you very much! Same sentiment to me going out really, I love reading some of the threads on here - its normally this or Reddit for my coffee breaks.

Great news too, the car is back. Angus at AMS did the work and sorted me out as usual! In the end the car got the two long high/low pressure lines replaced, and the two short lines on the rack done while we were at it. Pirtek remade the high pressure line as Porsche couldn't supply it until next year, which ended up being a blessing in disguise with the cost savings. So, shes all back and driving well again after a 4 wheel alignment.

The hero in all this, the power steering pump which has shrugged off 6-8 hours of running dry without any complaints!

Cheap update after the last one - fitted some spacers! Went with 20mm on the rear, and 15mm on the front...

Other than that, a woeful lack of use lately! Meanwhile my daily has gobbled up a new battery which cost me more than those spacers alone.

Can you feel any difference with these spacers or is it mainly cosmetic?

spacers generally set the car up more for understeer, more to change the stance of the car rather than anything else

lovely thread!

How does a spacer encourage understeer? There is a minor change in the scrub radius if fitted to the front but the effect of that change is complex and doesn't necessarily promote understeer.

Anecdotally I can say that I've fitted spacers to my E36 M3, E46 M3 and 996 C2 3.4 and never been able to detect much change in handling. The cars do look better though and for the M3's the spacers were required to fit 4 pot brakes which certainly did offer a performance improvement!

Was just logging in to update this! Yep, sadly up for sale.

I want to replace it, with whatever money the 996 can bring back in - my current sights are set on the SL500's from Mercedes terrible reliability period laugh If anyone is interested drop me a line, I'd love for it to go to a PHer.

Little picture of it all tucked up at my parents garage currently:

This is what you need, but hands off as this one is mine.

Yours was one of the first 996's that I followed the progress of when I started thinking of getting my own eventually. Guards red and the taco rear spoiler are just such a great look. I also enjoyed that you were doing as I'd intended and getting your hands dirty where you could. In fact, had I not just got my own 996 a couple of weeks back I'd be looking to take yours on now.

It sounds like your expansion tank has cracked to me and when hot it's dumping the coolant when under pressure.

I was just going to suggest the same. Apparently it’s a bit of a known thing.

If it is as simple as that, would you consider keeping it?

I did sell it in the end, I loved the car but I think I'd had enough with the repairs and it was time to go. I did have a lot of good times with it though, and hopefully its not my last 911.

I've freed up some cash which is going to a wedding fund, but also bought an SL! I'll start a thread on it soon, but its a 2002 SL500 with only 52k on the clock - very tidy. I wanted to get a V8 and fancied a convertible, its a different drive to the 911 as you can imagine laugh

My dad has an SL500 of that vintage....I agree it’s a different drive to a 996! Just don’t let the consumer battery go flat as it’s a nightmare!

Funnily enough the previous owner had replaced both batteries recently after it had a fit! Definitely investing in a trickle charger. The upshot on these is the engine and gearbox are solid as a rock, its the suspension that'll give me the sleepless nights. Basically the other way round to a 996!

Congrats on the Merc and hope it's a fun experience.

It looked like there was a lot of interest in your 996 and I was relieved to see it surpass my budget or else I'd have been kicking myself as yours was one of the reasons I got my own 996. Do you know if the new owner found it to be an expansion tank failure that was the issue?

So you did buy a convertible after all. Welcome to the hair dresser's car club.

Shame you sold the 996 - it was a lovely thing! Good to see you enjoyed it for a few years though - did you keep track of all the running costs and expenses over the years? It would be interesting to see how much it cost you over the years (maybe more for us than you, mind! laugh ).

Good luck with the new car - my dad had a 2005 SL55 back in the day. Lovely thing, the engine was insane. Unfortunately electrical gremlins tarnished the experience...I wish you better luck with yours!
